Hi guys, me and my friends are going to start some 40k armies. Im leaning towards either Tyranids or Necrons. Ive heard bad things about Tyranids book so im not sure there but how about Necrons? What armies are dominating nowadays?

I would say go Necron.

They have allot going for them, they are dominating right now on the tournament scene, they have a tone of choices and sexy new models with their recent book and imperial armour 12 which is due this year will be adding to their already substantial arsenal.

Besides you have a race old future tech dead robot warriors that killed mini gods and enslaved them to their will (Poor Ctan) to convert and play with, anything goes. xD

Depends on your reasons for getting into the hobby.

If you are in it because you want to go and play in tournaments competitively, go for the Necrons.

If you want to do it for the hobby/collecting side- just go with whatever army you like model wise or story wise.

As for just regular gaming- I would recommend any codex written by Matt Ward. With his books you don't have to look up what combinations work, you can generally just build whatever combo speaks to you personally and it has a good chance of doing okay on the tabletop.

(Unlike say Cruddances Imperial Guard and Tyranids, which only work in certain combinations)

Keep in mind that Necrons are very easy to paint if you just want to paint on a casual sort of level- Boltgun Metal, Black Wash, then work on the glowy green stuff, then you are done. But don't let that discourage you from doing something different and going all out on them- they can be painted to an amazing standard by some.

Tyranids used to be entirely a horde army, but these days you don't have to assembly line them- with their current book you can take genestealers or tyranid warriors as troops, and take lots of big monsters, meaning you only need a few models to run a tyranid army.

Heres a quick shortlist of armies-

Highly Competitive- Necrons, Grey Knights, Space Wolves, Imperial Guard (But only one build for the guard)
Horde- Swarm Tyranids, Infantry Guard, Cultist Chaos, Orks
Maneuverable Shooty- Dark Eldar, Eldar, Tau, Dark Angels
Gunline Shooty- Imperial Guard, Space Marines
Heavy Assault- Blood Angels, Chaos Marines, Dark Angels, Space Marines, Orks
Maneuverable but Squishy Assault- Dark Eldar, Eldar

Then there is Chaos Daemons... im not sure where they fit in right now because their new codex is so new I still don't have a clear impression of them.

The most important thing in my view would be to pick the army that you like the models of- no point picking necrons if you don't like painting endless amounts of robots, or picking Blood Angels if you hate the colour red.

Dark eldar!

Because they look neat!

...What? For a serious reply, read what Sanai wrote above me! x)

Thanks guys, awesome replies! I think I will go with Necrons :) I have a thing for undead :>... that came out wrong... I remember their story being something along the lines of them being a weak race and Deciever came and offered them immortality, then he changed them, making their bodies metal and giving them no will of their own. Easiest trick in the book for getting your own slaves if you ask me!

Well in their latest codex the fluff for necrons got changed a bit- Basically they eventually rebelled against the C'tan and gained their free will and independence back (they made this change for two apparent reasons, firstly that necron armies back in the day had very little personality to them, and secondly so they could break the C'tan into shards, as having a real, full c'tan on the tabletop is unrealistic given their power to consume entire stars)

Your average necron warrior does lack anything approaching free will, but the more powerful the necron, the more of a complete individual they are.

How many points do you usually play in 40k? is it 2500 like fantasy? If so I would love to know what a 1000 pts list with Necrons or maybe Chaos Marines looks like :D just to get some ideas :)

Lately ive been playing alot of 500 pts/750 pts games because most of the people at our gaming club are just starting out, and because we play alot of multiplayer games.

The standard size for armies is pretty much 1000 pts, 1500 pts and 2000 pts, with 2000 pts being the most standard size. (Its often the points value used for tournaments and the like)

Sanai, I would just like to point out that chaos is most competitive shooting heavy with oblits and heldrakes. Also, shooting heavy in general is more competitive then melee heavy.

2000 points hasn't been the standard points size anywhere I've played in the UK for some time. The standard points value if between 1500 and 1850.

The problem with 2000 points in sixth edition is that, in theory, it can open up dual Force Organisation Charts, which I think start breaking game balance, so I'd avoid that, and just play 1999 points instead.

I suggest you to have Necron they are good as compare to others, but this thing depends on your hobbies and way of thinking. You should choose it by yourself.
