yay? nay?

I like it, screams against armour or low LD enemies and 6 (or 7 if you charge) str 5 attacks against the normal toughness 3 trash :p. As long as you dont get hit by a cannonball or Searing Doom or Spirit Leech.... meaning you should get into CC asap!

448 Eeeeshh

Vampires are so expensive :skull:

It seems cool. I kinda didn't mind the Flying Vamp with the same basic set up, although this is obviously more protected. Still never gonna get those "In demand" ward saves, so kinda a deader, depending on if they want to snipe him out :ghost:

I have to say nay, no wardsave and only the 3+ armour save (with rerolls) to keep him alive.. I would be afraid of putting him in CC with anything but core infantry and even then he would die to CR if he was alone.. And anything shooty will bash his skull in too. He is basically a expensive TG that crumbles your army when he dies..

I only use Scabscrath on a GK as he comes with build in protection.. Not having that ward on my VL kills me every time I actually do leave it at home..!

Unless you're playing so many points that 448 can be thrown away on a durp lord!

But in his defense, it is a 2+ save, the only "Steed" he can take comes with barding.. so I'm pretty sure that brings him to a 2+. Still a shaky plan though.

Sorry, yes as Tawg said - by steed I meant Barded Nightmare so it's a 2+ save.

I personally don't consider the built in 5+ regen to be better than an easily achievable 2+ armour save.

You would with no AS death snipes... Have a 1+ rerollable... makes no difference against SL, Caress or Fate...

If, and I stress a big giant IIIIIFFFFFF you are daring enough to not give your VL a ward save, MR should be an auto-include in any list with this daring non-ward-saving-having build

I have to say, if I'm using a Vampire Lord, I'd want a 4+ or 5+ ward save. Having no ward save at all would terrify me.

Well, the difference for me is that the 2+ save is much more easily modified - or even ignored altogether. And, the things that do that are generally the things most likely to kill a Vampire Lord.

To elaborate, I can't recall ever losing a foot Vampire Lord or a Ghoul King to basic attacks. With high WS, T5, 3 wounds and a 5+ regenerate, the Ghoul King is pretty tough to take down. And, since it can also have armour and a better save, the VL is even tougher. Basically, whilst a 2+ save is reassuring, I've never felt it necessary on the VL or SGK.

On the other hand, when I consider things like death-snipes and enemy characters, and units with great-weapons, the lack of ward save on the VL would concern me a lot more than the lack of armour on the SGK.

That's just me though.

Well with the +1 wound vamp skill and -1 Ld he is quite killy :) But yeah I mostly do use it in fun lists :)

Well we do have the hellSTEED which was what i thought he ment ;) But point taken.

I do consider the regen to be better but not ideal, I always bring a ME when i use a GK so it is a 4+ in my book always :)

your lord would be better ok in a dual engine list though, if your MEs can keep up!

Consider this in a dual engine list

V Lord

Heavy Armor
Shield
HellSteed
Dragonhelm
Seed of Rebirth
Ironcurse Icon
Skabscrath
Aura of Dark Majesty
Beguile
Curse of the Reverant

Eggie said it best - the things that target characters (especially characters whose death typically ensures a win) tend to ignore armor. If you want Skabscrath, I think you have to take a Ghoul King - a normal VL just doesn't get it done.

Ward saves do fail a lot, with the extra wound and being able to heal yourself, could be okay. Also not all armies have death snipes.

I still enjoy the "silly" plan of putting Scabby on a MN :pumpkin:

I like to live dangerously :vampire3: But with the additional wound, a death snipe be pretty luck-tastic to kill him. Against SL on a ld9 wizard, they would have to roll 5 and I would have to roll 1 to outright kill him.

even the 2d6 -S wounds on 4s (Fate of Bjuna?) would require boxcars to kill him on average. And if they don't kill him that gives me a round of casting spells in order to heal him again.

Ok ok I'm sorry about the steed thing (old habits die hard)

I agree.

I will be running this build tonight, so I will let you know how it goes down

This really depends on the points limit of the game i guess and generally disagree with this for the following reasons.

1. The VL has 1 more LD which is best if you run into a Vampire civil war.

2. The VL can be a lvl 4 caster in an mortis engine list which means you dont need any other characters for support. the rest of the list can be units and not characters. Besides the whole point of a Mortis list is to take advantage of the +2 casting buff and you want a lvl 4 caster for this. In a common tournament list of 2400pts you cant bring a master necro and a vampire at the same time. Unless you want to gimp your vampire?

3. I avoid other characters for the most part so killing units is this guys job. I will take the extra save anytime i can.

I played this build against the new High Elves and pounded sand right up his "well use your imagination" Just avoid targets with the banner of the world dragon. Use your screams to test for this BEFORE you charge.

I have to say, I would not want my general casting anywhere near a Blasphemous Tome.

Use a lv1 VL or SGK, and get a Lv4 Master Necromancer to do the casting.

Also, I guess it depends on your definition of "gimping". I'm pretty sure you can make some decent Vampire Builds for 400pts or less - especially when you don't need to pay for magic levels.

Or, you could simply have a SGK - those can easily be 400pts or less, and still excel at their role.

I wish more ppl thought like this (not considering a ward save as THE most important equipment for a VL) for very selfish reasons ;)

Out of interest, do you consider a 4+ ward save mandatory on a Vampire Lord, or do you think 5+ is ok if you're using Nightshroud or the like?

I consider a 4+ ward mandatory in all situations with at least MR2 in any unit he's in if there is Lore of Death on the table. And that's mandatory.

VLs should only come with 55 points of magic item allowance and just make the 4+ ward auto-include.

But hey, I'm just a guy that believes a single model is the most important model in my army, and protect that model accordingly. I'm also a guy who only loses his VL when a 3 PD (never throw more than 3 dice with him) miscast dimensionally cascades. Otherwise he never dies.

As I've said, the only time I'd ever not have a ward is with a SGK w/ ME... Though SGKs don't fit my playstyle, but I do respect our slightly duller Lord brethren. Eternal hatred is a cool concept.

I like to live dangerously . . . but not that dangerously.

Yeah, Blasphemous Tome Mortis Engine casting with a L4 VL is just asking for a miscast to end your game early. At that point, you have only yourself to blame.

LoL ... Its honestly never been a problem.

Just don't throw more than 3 dice. Its simpler to rolling snake eyes an a multi support charge that costs you the game sometimes "stuff" happens.

Besides 3 dice should score enough to get the boosted version of almost all your spells.

And lastly you know how many of my opponents wizards I watched get sucked in the void because they like to throw 4 dice while within range of that thing. NOW THAT'S HILARIOUS.
