I will be playing in a friendly tournament soon and part of the comp allows you to add a monster to you army list from any legal army book... for free, but it cant be a flyer,so no HE Star Dragons unfortunately. What is the nastiest beast wandering around in the Old World these days?

Nurgle Daemon Prince without wings comes to mind if he's free.

I was also thinking of the Nurgle Daemon Prince. Even without wings he's pretty fast.

Although, would you have to pay for his gear/upgrades, or are they free too?

Anyway, other monsters that come to mind are the HPA (widely regarded as broken), and the K'daai Destroyer (but it's from Chaos Dwarves, so I don't know if it's legal).

@ Adam,They have just issued an update saying no monsters that can be characters, maybe everybody wanted a Demon Prince!
@ Blutsauger' what are Great Saurian's like? The name sounds good!
@ Vipoid,Yeah that would be a good one,I've got some bad memories of HPA
Thanks guys.

If Tamurkhan is legal then the K'daii Destroyer hands down. It can easily take down many times its own points if the opponent isn't equipped to deal with it (and it costs 325, so that's a lot of destruction!)

I can't remember if they are in the Storm of Magic or the Monstrous Arcanum book, and I have no idea what their stats are, but the model looks awesome. They had some WIP pictures of it in the latest White Dwarf.

The best monster, in terms of cost/effective, actually is the HE´s Frostheart Phoenix: 240 points of pure AWESOMENESS. Great stats (most 6´s), 5+ ward, and an undoubtly overpowered special effect (blizzard aura).

If you´re asking for raw power, in the Storm of Magic book you have quite crazy things: emperor dragons, exalted greater demons, and the like.

Except that you're not allowed to choose a flying monster.

Oh, sorry, i didn´t read that it can´t be a flying monster.

Then, as the others said, the kadaai destroyer is a beast; BUT it has a "simple" countermeasure: a cheap hero, mounted on anything, with the dragonbane gem. 2+ ward against all the monster´s attacks (they are flaming), and can´t be thunderstomped = the über killing machine stopped (at least for 2/3 turns) with a model that probably cost less than a third.

Also, it has frenzy (and thus can be very easily redirected), and DOESN´T (read the rules carefully) have magical attacks, so a spirit host can hold it for the whole game.

If it´s not allowed, the HPA is still a very good monster. And the new kharybdiss of the druchiis (hidra is now rubbish) is quite good for it´s cost: only 160 pts for WS5, I4, A5, S7 stats.

Maybe the ancient stegadon?. With the "d3 wounds each impact hit" upgrade can give a lot of pain if you charge, and it´s 250 pts. Stubborn, ItP, cold blooded, make him hard to break (only Ld6, so remember to put him within the inspiring presence), and the giant blowpipes -2d6 poisoned shots EACH- come for free. I´ll give it a try.
