I had this thought today while I was busy painting Nos' ghouls. What motivates me to paint?

I've always had more of a knack for this aspect of the hobby than I do the playing side. I do like the playing aspect, as I'm slowly getting more into it, but I've always been a fan of the artistic aspect of it.

How about you? What motivates you to paint?

Jake

That's the problem with me....
I can only really motivate myself to paint characters/monsters or other models which tend to get noticed more. I just can't stand painting rank-and-file troops.... It's so repetetive...

Well at the moment I have a real issue with motivation, though I still stand by the fact that I don't have a dedicated painting area. I have to get everything out, and then clear it all up after and I just end up not being bothered to do it.

When I was younger and lived with my parents I have a desk I could leave everything on, so I could just pick up a brush and paint. I think I would paint more if I could have it like that again, but first I need to get a better place...........o_o

Just having time.... I can't wait to start doing some good painting sessions but I been crazy busy. I handed in my last uni project today though, so in between travelling and moving house, I'll be doing some good painting! :) I have a female criminal gang for Faction Wars too that I can't wait to get stuck into.

Having the time and being in the mood. Over the summer I'll have plenty of time, so I'm saving up to buy a load of paints and some VC, plus some of that lovely green stuff for my planned conversions.

Off topic, but does anyone know which troops look the most generic that are cheap and human.

I don't usually let myself start another army until i've finished the one i'm doing atm. The problem is this doesn't get my backlog of old Lotr models painted and atm i'm not eyeing up a new army so don't paint my current one (chaos marines). However the doubles torny which I have in just over a month is going to force me to paint some models because its a doubles I don't only let myself down if I don't make it.

70 models to paint, 5 weeks that's 10 times more models then I would usually paint in 5 weeks...and sprinkle on some exams and a weeks holiday...It might be a busy few weeks

Well....I would really love to play the game....to do that is having a painted army first.....so motivation is crap xD need to paint first to play later xD

I agree with DoN, having a dedicated painting area makes a huge difference. I have been trying to build up a VC army over the past year, and to date I managed about 10 skeletons and 20 zombies, which is a pretty poor effort.
With 8th Ed coming out I am dying to get a game in, and so decided to crank up my painting effort - I bought and a paint station and a daylight lamp and set up a painting corner in my flat. I try to get in a couple of hours a night, and in a week I have almost doubled my previous years output !! Its great not having to get all of your stuff out and pack it away at the end of each session.

Having a goal makes a difference too. I am trying to paint 2,000 points before the end of the year, and I find it quite motivational to have something to work towards. I was originally trying to 2,000 points together for the UK GT in October, but to be honest, that isn't going to happen..... I guess if you are going to have a target, it needs to be realistic !

I get motivated by having more then 300 models left to paint and atm I have way to many left to paint in several project, as side from my Undead force, I have some units left on my Dark Elves and I´m working on Halfings for my Dog of War army.

what really motivate me to paint is every time when i look at those that i painted and it really give me the mood to continue do it to see a complete army.

Sometime really get bored to paint the same stuff again and again, but i will just stick to what i planned and paint it and stick to the plan of at least paint 1 model, or a certain part of a model a day.

Having a fully painted army and playing against another fully painted army is what motivates me. It might sound a bit nerdy but it looks so effing cool when you have 2000 pts vs 2000 pts on a gamingboard with scenery and what not. :)

Plus, having a place to paint is a good starter for me.

My motivation is very simmilar to the one of Boo :-)
Seeing fully painted armies battling each other on a nice gaming table ... I want that too :-)

*waves*

Yeah, I'm going with what Boo said, but I also find I am the most motivated when I'm painting and modeling with my friends. Having someone else there to interact with, bounce ideas off of, etc. pretty much makes painting a more enjoyable experience.

Well Mine is a very intresting reason to paint my wife has a addiction to painting. It is her stress relief and way to escape the world for a little while. I personaly paint to spend time with her. She has the fortunate luck to work in a game store where she can paint all day long. When asked what she would like to do some days (anniversy and mothers day) she chooses to paint over fancy dinners or even movies.

My motivation for painting my Counts has always dwindled...however, on the 40k side of things I've always had no problems painting all my hundreds of Orks.

My theory is that it is the size of the teeth...if only those vampire teeth weren't so tiny...
