Whats the magic number for Blood Knights?

I've begun using a unit of 8-10 with my general and bsb in the unit. Run the Banner of Blood Keep and one of those characters with the Obsidian Lodestone making the unit quite resilient.

It's a point investment to say the least, but watching the unit single-handedly solo enemy armies is glorious.

So I'm guessing if I plan to put characters in the unit then I need 8-10 models since there needs to be at least 5 rank and file for a look out sir roll.
Standard Bearer in the unit is fairly essential.
Musician is not very useful. Just for swift reforms right?
Champion is redundant? Since any of them can accept a challenge, there not much point with his magic weapon vs points cost and then he can't use his lance.

So that leaves 7 models for the look out sir.

Ugh, so points heavy and footprint wide. Seems better to put the BSB and lord in a black knight unit.

In bigger games, I use 16, 6 wide, with 2 hero vamps. I'm desperate to use a horde , if only to see my Grimgor obsessive opponents face as they flank his 50 black orcs.

I did some more research and it seems that for a small unit of blood knights a champion isn't very good.
Command models get removed in the following fashion: musician, banner, champ.
And I'm sure many people have been in the position where they have just 1 blood knight left. And since banners can't be resurrected, you want that last model to be the banner guy.

As for what banner to take I have to ask what the meaning of 'ranged' in the blood keep banner means. Does this constitute any attack that doesn't take place in combat? Such as a hex that does wounds, or other weird magic?
I'm at odds on weather to take the flag of blood keep or take a WarBanner. I'm a fan of the war banner because then this unit becomes my hail marry, If I need to win a combat I send these guys in - lots of attacks plus an extra static combat rez.
But I don't want the knights to be targeted first turn with searing doom and get wiped out.

It's really a no-brainer. The War Banner adds +1 res, whereas a single blood knight is dishing out 3 S7 attacks and a S4 attack from his steed. 3 S7 attacks is much more dangerous than +1 combat res, so if the Flag of Blood Keep saves even a single Blood Knight from becoming a casualty, it's already a better deal than the War Banner, and it just becomes more and more valuable the more Knights it saves.

PS - The current school of thought is that a 'ranged attack' is anything that occurs at range. So it would include banshee screams, magic missiles, aura effects like the Engine of the Gods, etc.

Nothing stopping you from having Blood Keep /and/ War Banner. Blood Keep isn't a magic banner, it isn't even a banner for your Standard Bearer. The rules call it a unit upgrade, like putting Infested on your Tbat. Doesn't say anything about even requiring a Standard Bearer for the upgrade.
