I'm a noob at WH and VC and have a game this evening against Skaven. We're playing 1500 each and he tends to have large blocks of slaves. I have generally done very badly against them.

Tonight I have made some changes and three main infantry blocks and three heroes. Which hero would work best in which unit?

heroes -

Vampire Lord, HA, Extra Weapon, Red Fury, L2, Ward save 5+ item, Book of Arkhan. (not played a VL before)

Necromancer, L2, Death, Cursed Book

Tomb Banshee (not played a Banshee before)

units

25 Graveguard, hand w\shield, banner

25 skellies with sword and board

20 ghouls

I immediate thought was the VL with the GG but I was worried about all my eggs in one basket. Any advice anyone or doesn't it matter that much?

Cheers

Ash

It's not a bad start, your Lord has the basics of a blender Lord, but will benefit more from a magic weapon, sword of strife or ogre blade are particularly good, the quickblood power will help a lot for rerolls, but might leave you close on points. You can put your characters more or less anywhere with that list, but might get more out of the GG with great weapons. I tend to put my SGK with my GG, and other stuff with the skeletons, the banshee will put people off fighting the bunker, and you can use her as a March blocker if need be, ethereals are good at that, but be aware of CR.

The rest of the army is settled and so I can't adjust the points of the heroes.

I could drop the 5+ Ward talisman (of something) for a magic sword. The extra attacks would provide synergy with Red Fury. But does it leave the VL rather vulnerable?

With what you have? Banshee in the grave guard & vamp in the ghouls, possibly considering a +str sword on the vamp or at least a potion of strength. Necro in the skeletons, put behind the other two units, so that all three remain within the generals marching range & the necro & vamp's invocation rangse, and to make it harder for enemy to assassinate the necro to cut into your casting ability.

Leastwise, that's my thoughts on the matter. Do you have anything other than those three units & characters? If you want to push the infantry/casty angle, you might consider a mortis engine to advance between the ghouls & guard, ahead of the skeletons. Otherwise a terrorgheist starting within the general's march range and moving up to threaten a flank is always a good thing. Also, between dire wolves, fell bats, raised zombies, and spirit hosts, vamps have some very good and very useful chaff / jammer / cheap deployment drop units that can be a big help in disrupting your opponents' plans & keeping them from surrounding and overwhelming the core of your force, which has to bunch up to an otherwise unacceptable degree due to the march/res/buff auras. Picking some of those units that you like and learning to use them would be a big help. You can also go with a heavier flank presence via hexwraiths, cairne wraiths, smaller black or blood knight units, maybe varghulfs or vargheists. They all can function somewhat similarly, and might be worth considering if having all of your strength in a clump leaves you unable to respond adequately to whatever your opponent decides to throw at you, even with some chaff running about gumming stuff up.

I do have some extra goodies it's true. One Terrorgheist and 10 Dire Wolves (1x10 or 2x5 I'm not sure yet).

The Skaven have such low health that I've not felt the need to boost the STR of the VL. Well, not so far anyway. Our previous games have been at 1000 points, and I don't know what he'll add with the extra 500.

i always find sword of might to be adquate enough. +1 strength often resulting in 3-to-hit or even 2-to-hit. and -3as. With rerolls thats usually all you need to get the job done.

I'd lose both the books and the extra magic level, that gives a lot of points to play with. Ghouls are expensive and you could do with more CR and bodies maybe try some zombies? Then bunker the necrosis and banished with the skeles and the vamp with the GG, as they don't have a lot of punch when sword and board.
