I have just bought a spearhead (no Dire Wolves) and reading through the book I noticed the high number of rare units.

-Black Coach
-Cairn Wraiths/Tomb Banshee
-Vargulf
-Knights of the Blood Keep

At first I was generally gonna select Vargulf first and then either second Vargulf (nasty) or Wraiths, but now I am seriously considering the KotBK.

I think these three are the better options but the Black Coach is looking a little nastier.

From first pick onwards which would be your order of rare units?

Cairn Wraiths - Mobile unit that dishes out the damage and has excellent protection from damage. Useful in pretty much any kind of army.
KotBK - Another excellent damage unit, frenzy can be an issue but with a good banner they can be very tough. There are enough raising options that losing one isn't so bad either.
Black Coach - I'm liking the new rules, could be excellent in or against a magic heavy army (and I like magic heavy ;))
Vargulf - cool but I'm not too keen on it just yet. Is it even US5? doesn't fly and well it doesn't do anything as cool as the others.

Wraiths are pretty strong but still can't pass up something that hits hard, can mop up scouts/skirmishers and when used in tandem he can add serious punch to another unit.

My favourite are wraiths but after that I like them all! I thin kI'm just going to have to buy them all and swap them out when I want to try a different list!:D

KotBK. Black coach sounds fun, too, but it deals less damage than the frenzied vampires do. Wraiths are a bit expensive and fragile unit (don't want to field them against skaven) and varghulf sounds great... but 175 pts.

I'm a man for the classics all the way - black coach rules (pwns even) - the varghulf seems a bit boring to me and the KotBK seem out of touch with the VCz... but I have no beef with the cairn wraiths, even if they are expensive.

Knights of the Blood Keep. Love the fluff and the models :D And they're a great, albeit expensive, unit, but they should be able to smash through anything really...

The Varghulf and Black Coach come in second and third, respectively with the Wraiths at fourth. While each has their uses, I like the KotBK the best unit to complement my army and play-style...

l'm looking at the Vargulf to begin with, as it's different model wise. Plus l think it'll slot in well with my "Forever Hungry" shambling hordes.

I have a varghulf and he's good, but I like KotBK a lot more(I played khorne chaos in 40k. Then the new 'dex came out lol)

I have a coach already, and like the new rules. First choice, however, will likely go the the knights, although I am looking to probably convert from either Empire or Bret knights (I have spares of each).

I used my Varghulf in a 1,000 point game against Lizardmen a couple days ago and I'll never run a VC army without one. He tore threw a unit of 3 Kroxigors, nearly by himself, in a couple turns, and only lost one wound to their strength 7 attacks, and then proceeded to terrorize the Lizardmen's right flank the rest of the game. Brilliant. The next rare slot will be taken by the Black Coach, a must have, in my opinion, especially when playing with and/or against a magic heavy army.

well, i'm very very inlove with banshees, i used to go with two when playin the old rules so i think wraiths is my option. But i think that smtimes a black coach could be tryed specially coz i just finishd paintin it...

Black Coach for me, mostly 'cos i spent a lot of time converting one from a screaming bell for me skaven VC, though i do like the rules a lot. 2nd choice is harder, i cant decide between a varghulf (love the model, and should turn out a bit rattish with some converting) or wraiths (great rules, and i already have some plague censer bearers to turn into them)
KotBK i probably will never use as i dont really like them (almost borders on hatred actually). I neither like the rules (hate units that i cant control easily) nor do cavalry fit into a skaven-themed army very easily

Talk about 'blind as a bat,' I didn't realise that the Black Coach actually steals the power dice, one of my mates is running a Tzeentch Beastman army, it could cause a lot of havoc there, although it could be problematic if you roll a lot of 6's in your magic phase, also does it keep stealing even when it gets to full power?

I don't know! It's the first time I've ever been spoiled for choice with Rare units and I'm lost!

Probably the Blood Knights in smaller games, as there won't be as many potent characters or war machines around (no Lords, fewer Rares and Specials) to pose a serious counter to them. I'm not sure about the Black Coach: while it's marvellous, it does eat Power dice from my pool, so I suspect the list would have to be built specially with that in mind (no first-level wizards, for one thing...). The Cairn Wraiths will be brilliant against those irritating Dragon Mages/Great Eagles/stuff that likes to think it's safe to march-block me, and the Varghulf... hell, I don't know. I'll have to try it.

I got my spearhead this past weekend and intend to run a Vargulf in my 2000 and under list. After that since most of my special units are Ethereals, I'll be fielding Wraiths :D

Although making the Black Coach Ethereal and flying can be fun

I just love the Black Coach; it not only has some funky abilities but also looks the part. In terms of usefulness I'll be using the Varghulf more though. I also love the knights but they are hidiously expensive in both cash and points; I would not field themunless I have at least 2.000 pts. to spend on a list.

I've just seen a game with the new VCs, and the KoBK and the Wraiths did not perform very well against Lizardmen.

I've voted for the Varghulf, I don't think I'm marching to war without one. It suits quite well my army, helping in a flank or even in a second line after the infantry blocks.

Next will be between the wraiths and the coach (damn, I love the mini), and once I've saved enough money I may buy the knights and use them in friendly games.

However I still need to test them myself!

I'd like to include two units of Cairn Wraiths, but I need a Varghulf for my fluff. I suppose I can make a character, so in the end I'll probably use two unit of Cairn Wraiths. They'll look like these: http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes4/images/monsters/crusaders.jpg

You can't see it in the picture, but the guy that's holding his sword up is being illuminated. I really love when they do that, hence why I still play HoMM4 :D
