After some issues with Games Workshop undercoats in the past, I'm wondering whether any of you know of good alternatives. My primary concern is the quality of the spray but cost is also a consideration.

Army Painter. All the way.

Their white & black primers cost about $12 Cdn, and their colors cost the same price as GW's white and black; and it's in a literal RAINBOW of choices...

'Nuff said.

Agree with the Army Painter, though I heard some complaints I personally never had any issues and one can seemingly lasts forever. My last can undercoated at least 2.5K worth of models including tanks and such.

I want to try the Army painter stuff myself, including their shader stuff. I just used Tamiya lt. grey primer I had laying around on my lighter colored stuff it works great. If its easier to get depending where you are.

There is always Krylon. Some people don't like it but I have never had an issue with it and it is very inexpensive. Although they only have a limited number of colored primers: black, white and grey......

I find Krylon very, VERY thick on the models. I had a friend use them (his dad owned a NAPA Autoparts and so he had a readily available supply) and when he primed his skeletons (the newer models) the ribs virtually disappeared.

Army painter all the way. Just follow the directions in the can because enviromental conditions can get you. Also if your are do inclined army painter makes a great range of interesting colors you can prime with

Absolutely. When I first brought Army Painter primers into my store, I sold out of EVERYTHING in two days (and I brought 6 of each colour, and 12 white/black). It was insane. Add to that the fact that I'd JUST finished painting my 2000pt O&G Army a week or so before, and it was insult to injury; if I'd of had Army Painter Orc Skin primer, my job would've been a helluva lot easier & faster!

They have dead flesh, dry bone and blood red primers (just fyi)

I just got Army Painter Bone spray undercoat and well... I love the color but it is a bit thick.. some detail was lost on my skeletons...but I can deal with it. the washes and highlights should still bring out most of the detail. Just beware not to spray too close.

I use Krylon white primer. No problems, ever. And i dont find it to be all that thick.

when using white primer less is more, it means you generally need to spray from farther away and only do quick bursts as opposed to a continuous spraying, I hardly ever use white primer because more often then not it sprays out like cottage cheese and your models don't have faces anymore (in the bad way) however krylon does tend to work better than the GW stuff. The best primer i have ever used sells at the home depot for one dollar, it's called Quick Color, it covers the model superbly and is the thinnest spray i have used, although it only comes in black for now :( , but with that same logic try giving some of the cheap sprays a shot see if there is a white primer that works well.
