Goddamit.

The nail polish remover we had at him did nothing!!

Either that I am such a goddam good painter that the remover just could live with itself by destroying such a work of art.......yeah that must be it :innocent:

So I will be in this, once I can get something else to strip my model.

On the plus side the inside of the bowl I used to strip is very clean! xD

Haha, try Simple Green, that'll get that stuff off. Just dunk the mini in it for a good day or so and simply scrub it off with an old toothbrush.

Alright,

Let's get ready to paint people.

Here's the model I have chosen to paint for this session:

He's going to my necromancer for my Wrath of the Lich King-themed Army.

You don't need to have the same mini as me, not by any means. This is just a fun way to paint a mini with everyone so get a mini and sit down and paint with us.

Here's the schedule as follows. I plan on creating an update every Wednesday giving everyone enough time to catch up to the same step before we all move on together. By having it on a midweek day, we all have time to see the update and get it over the weekend or whenever we have free time.

April 14th: Prepping and priming the mini- Yes, simple but I do put a lot of work into prepping the mini.
April 21st: Focus of the mini and fleshy bits- the face. The face is always the starting point as well as the focal point, simply my taste however.
April 28th: Metallics on the mini- NMM or "Real Metallics"
May 5th: Initial Basecoating- very important step in establishing a good coverage point for all of your surfaces.
May 12th: Shading
May 19th: Highlighting
May 26th: We're almost there! Finishing touches and basing.

Simple enough?

Let me know if this works out for all of you.

All the best,

Jake

go to home depot, or whatever you have for home improvement stores in the uk and buy this.

Simple Green All Purpose Cleaner

its not toxic, but some people have reactions on their skin.

Also it kind of has a funk ( not horrible, but you can definitely tell its a cleaner) to it so don't leave it in your house. outside/ in the garage is fine. Don't worry about spills either, you'll just end up making something cleaner =p

Leave them in overnight ~ 10 hours and have at it with a toothbrush.

Longer soaks will get through the primer layer too.

Sounds good to me, and sweet mini btw.

Wouldn't you normally do the basecoating right after priming though and then move on to details? (or is steps 2 and 3 more of a discussion and practice?)

I'm going on holiday Wednesday 14th for five days but hopefully I should be at the same point, I would take my stuff with me but I'm pretty sure me mrs wouldn't be too happy with me lol.

RE: Who wants to paint a mini together?

I'm good! I'm painting me. :D

My Brettonian models came in, at least my first two. So I'm gonna practice on This guy in this little get together.

No skin, 'cept a bit of the horse. It's entirely Armor otherwise. So I get a lot of metallic/nmm painting practice.

RE: Who wants to paint a mini together?

Redarmy, I cant wait to see you paint him. He fits in your army perfectly too, he looks like Kel Thuzad!

RE: Who wants to paint a mini together?

Just a tad confused by the intinerary.

Do you mean that on the Wednesday, you show us some hints and tips, and then we go away for that week and try and do it? Then the next Wednesday you show us the next step. So basically come the 14th, I need to have a model that is primed (in black presumably)?

Perhaps we should have two threads. One for posting pics (I think everyone should post at least one pic per week with their progress), and then either this or another thread for the actual tips.

I also have that necro model you are going to do currently sat unpainted……I suppose I could do that, and in that way I can probably learn really well as I will have your model to directly compare against, thought mine will no doubt look much much poorer.

Hmmm, you know this might make an interesting article for the next Invocation, fully written up with everyone’s models.

Oh and Jake – I still want that vamp skin tutorial! I must have your secrets for my vampires.

RE: Who wants to paint a mini together?

Ahhh the 14th is tommorow, I need to get a model quick.

*Puts reminder on phone "Get vampire model"*

RE: Who wants to paint a mini together?

By the By, what color is good to prime a whole lot of Armor? White or Black? I'm going to go for the whole 'Resplendant in Sunlight' look, if that helps at all.

Heh. This is literally my first time painting a fully armored figure. I'm excited.

well whenever I paint a silver or metalic armor I always prime black it sticks to the primer better and gives it a bit more of a shinny effect

You have it correct! You don't need to necessarily prime in black, it can be in grey, black, white, hell, even pink.

Perhaps we should have two threads. One for posting pics (I think everyone should post at least one pic per week with their progress), and then either this or another thread for the actual tips.

That would be very nice!

Oh nonsense, just go for it!

The article would be a ton of fun and would help encourage others to paint.

That's currently sitting in my documents on my computer, you'll get it by the weekend :D

It that fails to work, try getting it to strip with some sexy music. Not like this guys HERE though...Seriously though, I have to 'effin undercoat my mini half in black, half in something else 'cos my local sold the last of his black yesterday. Rather pissed at the moment. Plus he wants me to a showcase model for him (and I'll even get discountsxD) but how when he don't stock the paint!!!Grrr, maybe I'll just select a diff model. Ha, a dire wolf. Might do my converted Wizard. He's a little top heavy though, I'll post a pic and see what everyone thinks

EDIT : I would re-undercoat it, but the black would show though and it would look like the poor sod fell off a cliff. Wouldn't make much diff given my painting ability...

OOO  me too please

Sorry - another item for the next Invocation

Well I have sent the missus to get some better nail polish remover as recommened by Bug16 (frum superdrug). If that is a no go then I'll go with the same model as Jake.

So I assume we will be getting our first set of tips today then?

RE: Who wants to paint a mini together?

Konrad Von Carstein is sitting around in my case, prepped, based and primed, so I guess I have to wait til next week... ;)

RE: Who wants to paint a mini together?

Good evening all!

I hope you all took the time to prep and prime your mini this evening!

Here be my Necromancer:
ai174.photobucket.com_albums_w108_redarmy27_Army_20of_20the_20Lich_20King_Progress009.webp

Before priming him I made sure to scrub the mini thoroughly and remove all mold lines. I then mounted him to his base and tac'd the mini to the paint pot for easy handling.

I then used two thin coats of primer to get a good solid coat without losing detail.

Anyways, we start on the face next week!

Jake

RE: Who wants to paint a mini together?

Whoops, I'm behind. I'll prime my guy tonight...

but there's an issue. My model doesn't have a face. He's fully armored. I'll prolly just sit around and pick up tips until we get to the armor part, and that's where I'll do like...my entire mini.

RE: Who wants to paint a mini together?

heres my blood knight
ai808.photobucket.com_albums_zz3_VladVonCarstien_bloodknight.webp

for the base I used the resin bases from the very cool warhammer basing kit.

A good tip for anything metal is to give it a good wash with soap and water before you prime because they put a mold release that will rub off the paint on your models.

I always put the warhammer rocks on before prime but always put on snow or static grass just before a coat of varnish at the end.
