Who's your daddy - er...Lord?

Hi guys, for those of you using a Vampire Lord as your General, I'm curious about a few things:

- foot or mounted
- magic or combat

and - this is my main question: For those of you using a GW model, which one are you using? For some reason, none of the Vampire Lord models quite fit the look for me - I can't put my finger on it exactly.

I personally use a combat Lord on foot. I do this for the march bubble and because we can now afford to lose our fighty vampire. This being said he MUST be backed up by a reasonable caster. The new Necromancer Lord being cheap has helped with this as we can afford a good fighter and a cheap caster, even at 2000 point game level.

I will be converting a Bretonnian model for my Vamp Lord/Hero.
For my Necromancer I use a Reaper model -the sexy one thats has the skimpiest outfit ever! Has a cool looking sword so the Kemler rules seem to fit. The current necromancer(single kit, corpse cart, mortis engine) are all great looking models but not awesome enough for Lord status in my opinon.
Empire is rumored to have a female wizzard released so that might become a great conversion.

I agree with you about the choice of Vampire Lord models. Its basically a choice of old finecast special characters or the coven throne. Coven throne ones are nice but from what I can see(from the pic) the legs sections would have to be totatlly replaced for a decent conversion.

I was REALLY hoping for a Vamp Lord kit like empire and high elves have. Maybe in the second wave.

I have a mounted and foot version of the fifth edition blood dragon model with hand weapon and shield. Lately, I've been using him mounted more often than not and as a combat vamp with a second magic level. I'm planning on using the vampire lord from the dragon/terrorgheist kit mounted on a converted Chaos steed for him soon. I've also played a couple of games with a more Von Carstein oriented list. I use my old Vlad for that lord, though I recently bought a metal version of the current Vlad and look forward to painting him up.

Foot, always foot, unless im playing a crazy list just for laughs. Otherwise your paying usually around 400 points to wast a cannons turn of shooting....and i dont really mean waste....

Maybe i play against empire dwarves and skaven alot...which i do, but even if you put a mounted lord with black knights its pretty easy to drop them below where he can take look out sirs, then any war machine can pulp him. On a monster its worse because they hit the monster and the lord and multi-wound both. Sure you can give him saves, maybe even a 4+ ward, but that just means on average two cannons will have to hit him.

I am currently using a couple different models.

For a casty vamp lord I currently use the old generic von Carstein on foot vampire.

For a GW combat vampire I use this model (converted with an eviler looking sword) :

I have a new Dark Eldar Archon model that I plan on converting to make another vampire.

And this new DE Lhamaean might make it in too

I am always missing a huge plastic vampire kit from gw with lot of bits.
anyway, I usually use the Vlad model for my general (I painted him with a lot of care therefore), but i have a little collection of vampires and from other mini manufacturers too.
I always take them on foot, in a unit of ghouls if combat, or a bunker if caster, but sadly i havent played with the new book yet.

Im currently looking for a separate strigoi model from the ZD kit, but I come up with the ide of using a Vargheist model on a 20mm (omg) base, modelled atop a pinnacle or something. That would be a very nasty strigoi general.
OR
Use a single vargheist to represent a hellsteed mounted vamp lord!!!

Let me recommend 2 models for you

Barrow warden mystic from reaper minis - I use it as a caster vamp/mannfred but he will do as kemmler now. Fascinating mini.

Gamezone mini chaos sorcerer - as necromancer/caster vamp. Hooded fella, dark magic blowing at his feet. yay!

I've thought about using the Dark Eldar Ur-Ghul for a ghoul king. I also contemplated using LOTR Black Numenorean Warriors for an armored non-Blood Dragon vampire.

I too am looking for someone who will part with the strigoi out of that boxset. He is FAR too cool to be left sitting in a basement somewhere if someone doesn't use him. ~pout~ He just reeks of potential. Boneheart, if you get your hands on one, I'd love to see what you do with it!

As to the initial question, I always have my lords on-foot. I've a necrarch from my casty-days, and some older reaper vampires for my fighty-lists.

The wonderful thing about the vampires is ANYONE could've become one throughout the ages. So, if you find a great sculpt that just calls to you, give him some pale skin, a drip of blood from the lip, and some dark bags under his eyes and ~voila~ your new Vamp Lord has arrived!

TBH I'm still experimenting with different set ups.

In general I use Vlad for caster vampires on foot, Mannfred for caster vamps on horse back and Konrad for melee vamps on foot. I have a bunch of non GW stuff as well.

The last vamp lord I used was.

He was on foot in a unit of S&B GG. He is a decent combat lord, with fear bomb providing a nice bonus. He was also the primary caster, but I built my list around needing as little magic as possible and giving him a couple of levels is cheaper than buying a master necro. Its a bit all eggs, but he is better protected than the necro would have been as well. He performed pretty well, the fear bomb worked a couple of times, he provided some nice CR and got off a couple of spells. He is very expensive though.

I kinda like this guy because he keeps my main blocks moving and makes them very solid. He also made the fear bomb tougher to kill than when I was using a Master Necro for the general. I'm not sure he is my favourite though, I think I could take something for 100 points less and be better off over all. Fear bomb isn't all that for its cost, but it has been pretty fun.

My two fighty Vampires are the old 2 axe weilding chaos champion (with his foot on a stone) with a simple marauder head swap, and a conversion from cannis wolborn wer ei took off all the space wolfy stuff and added another fur cloak on his shoulder, more scars to the wolf and gave him a marauder flail. I have been using his wolf as a hellsteed but I really fancu using iot as an abyssal terror (as it is so cool!) but I don't know about it as the wolf clearly cannot fly!!
My necros are a marauder/high elf archer hybrid with a mowhawk and staff/book combo, a kneeling high elf bowman with chaos staff, skull head and a raven on his shoulder, and the old necromancer from the heroquest boxed game

I converted my mounted vamp lord from the terrorgheist kit into a Vampire lord on nightmare..
For my vamps on foot i really like the reaper models, here a some samples:

My lord is a half and half, combat mage on foot, last time I ran them he was like this.
Vamp lord, level 4 with lore of vampires
Master of the black arts and fear incarnate.
Sword of anti heroes, powerstone and the common magic item armour with the 4+ward, and a shield. He sits in a big big block of skellies with the screaming banner, and last time I had konrad in the same unit too, worked very very well. Two massacres to me so far.

I use Vlad von Carstein himself. Easily best Hybrid lord, and, compared to last book, is now actually quite good at both casting and combat. Having S6 makes him nastier in close quarters (and yay heavy armour!) and now that our magic is much better his level 3 is very useful. Throw that in with being virtually indestructible, and he's perfect.

I know he can't beat Count Mannfred in magic, or a super-Giant blade-Red fury combat Lord, but he's more tactically flexible and provides me with a key spellcaster who doesn't need to hide in a bunker.
