When I started collecting as a kid I started collecting Undead(before VC and TK split up). Can't really remember why. Then 10 years later I wanted to start a new army(had been a Bret player up till then) and my choice naturally fell on VC since it was my childhood pick. Also I'm a major Bram Stoker-file/Gothic Horror Nerd so that might also have something to do with it. Playstyle-wise it also suits me because I'm a controlfreak(something I learned about myself from playing chess where I'm a very defensive/positional player) and VC are very stable(because of their unstable rule :D ) in the sense that they never flee and you can raise lost troops.

I was coming from 5th edition 40k, and wanted an army that had everything that 40k didn't have (at the time): magic, cavalry, and psychology. Plus, my 40k armies are all "good guys", so I wanted to play the baddies this time. Vampire counts was the intersection of all these desires. Magically inclined bad dudes with strong cavalry and a built in psychology effect in every model!

I have never watched the film all the way through, and that scene is awesome.

Sprinkle of this, with the added bonus of knowing full well that from a fluff perspective no matter how many models of my own die, I lose nothing, as they are only raised corpses. Wheras my opponents, unless they too are undead (at which point things feel a little pointless) every man/dwarf/elf/hopefulofchaos that dies is already a small victory for me. My generals are ageless and practically immortal, the influence of chaos on them is muffled, and their armies consist of every corpse that has enough substance to be bound together.

The ultimate knowledge that even should they win the battle, i've already won the war.

And a dash of this. When I chose to play Vampires, my 40k army was Eldar. Since then I have put them in a box, until a new codex is released, and made a small Tau force. So both 'good' guys. At least in so far as 40k gets.

My larger focus however is Necrons in 40k, as I get some of the same feeling as described above. Manage to destroy a unit? Cheer when they fail their ressurection protocols? Thats the point where I smirk a little, knowing full well that all I lost was a metal shell, and there are many more where they came from.

All in all though, retired Eldar aside, they are all shooting armies. If i'm playing Sci-fi I like to shoot. If i'm playing fantasy I like to chop and cast spells.

As for the Vampires themselves, as Tomb Kings or even Chaos would fulfil the 'power/control' part of the above, the reason is that they are very interesting when they are not trying to be too human.

Sure, there are your endless repentant vampires that spawned an endless parade of detective shows. These bore me. Angel? Angelus was more fun. Spike stayed fun because he kept that edge. Stephan? I prefer Damen and Klaus.

But then there are your Vampires who embrace it. Even if they arn't 'evil' they don't hide from what they are. They drink blood from humans and enjoy it, even if they don't kill. They emrace the passing of centuries and explore each era and what it has to offer. They are puppetmasters of mortals. They aquire knowledge that takes several human lifetimes, of not several hundred if they are ancient enough.

At the same time, while being undeniably somethign else, there is still that human element that can't be denied. They feel, strongly, and fall in love. Thier drives are almost always still rooted in that spark of humanity.

Their martial prowess in Warhammer is also impressive, as like everything else in the setting, its dialed up to maximum. Even if they weren't already strong enough (even a scrawny Nechrach) of ripping an Orc to pieces in hand to hand, or some of them slaying dragons single handedly, if they don't feel like lifting a finger they can slump in their chairs with a glass of... wine, and raise the dead from all around them to do the fighting while they look on in smug amusement.

I remember that film the Black Cauldron, very dark and sinister for disney.
I cant remember what it was that drew me to vampire counts or vampire mythology in general but I was just drawn to the idea of dark castles, forests and shambling undead it sounded like fun and well for warhammer the modelling potential is great
