Does it stack up to a 2+ to hit if you are hitting on 4+ without modifiers? If so, is it tactically worth it for a cheap WK bsb with sword of striking?

You could have GG or BkK carrying it on there sb.

You can take a BSB with Magic Items if you dont take a Magic Banner. Its one or the other.

 Yes of course, I should have stated more clearly. WK bsb with sword of striking IN a unit of GG with barrows as their 50 magic banner.

Well that's exactly where my question was leading. Why would they not stack if they don't stack?

Seeing as how most people agree to them stacking, do you guys think its a legit strategy if you want a cheap offensively-reliable bsb for 125pts?

This is one of many ways to make sure you have as many possible hits in an attempt to guaruntee a killing blow.

In the BRB says "Sometimes modifiers apply to these rolls, but a natural score of 6 always hits and a natural dice score of 1 always misses"

So, any modifiers do stack. Think of it as with the negative modifiers from, lets say: Moving + Shooting + Soft Cover (it's for Shooting Attacks, but still) or the Glittering Scales + Swarm of Flies (Zombie Dragon).

And, to make it viable, I'd rather have GGs with Great Weapons, Banner of Barrows and a Vampire BSB with the Screaming banner, giving Fear to enemies.

True, enemies with Immune to Psychology can counter this, yet it makes the whole Unit Hit and Wound on 2s, and if you want to tool your Wight King for combat, you're better of with the Fencer's blades (WS 10 on the user)

Attacks are made at WS 10, this doesn't include WS10 when the enemy attacks you so they are still hitting on a 3+, as far as my knowledge.

Essentially this makes fencer's blades +1 to hit and additional handwep combine for 20 pts more than just sword of striking and 1 less attack. This makes a bigger difference in lower point games, obviously. When you are trying to fit 2 necros and a WK bsb in the hero section and a vampire lord, for example.

Just tell me I'm wrong and I'll stfu but it seems to me that a WK bsb with sword of striking is worth more to my army than a WK bsb +fencer's because I might be able to squeeze an extra wraith hero from the points I attempt to suck out of the rest of my character. Or give him ruby ring if I actually gaf about anything with regen or happen to be running a forbidden lore vamp hero with lore of fire.

Ah yes, if you are struggling to fit extra characters / Units or reinforce Specials (like Grave guards) then you should go for the Most Important Stat you are looking for: If you just wish for your King to Hit on 2s, then yeah, Sword of Striking gets the job done.

Now, if you wish to maximize the attacks your King can make and increase the chance to get a Killing Blow, then the extra attack will make a difference.

Yes, as far as the effect reads, only your attacks will be at WS10, others will still Hit you on the King's base WS, but still, that's the reason you choose a Wight King over a Vampire, his added survivability. One point in your favor is that you can combine the Sword of Striking with a shield, giving him extra protection, however it follows the same logic as the Grave Guards:

No Great Weapon means that they will be tougher, but will not get the job done when it comes to killing power. If you are building a character to survive challenges, consider how many points it's worth putting in "Winning Power" and how many points it's worth giving him "Defensive Power".

Bottom line is, you build a Wight King for combat (either challenges or Hack & Slash) depending on the objective you wish for him to fulfill. Do you want him not 1-shoted by a more powerful Character? Add defense, even a Ward or the Dragonhelm. Do you want him to be feared for his killing prowess? Then forsake some defense and try to get the optimal weapons for him to maximize his profit, even if it costs you another Character that might not even end up doing his job at killing properly.

=D
