I am looking to find a wood elf list that does well against vampires. I'm thinking of fleshing out my wood elf army past a old box of glade guard and am looking for a direction to go. I have a quick one I made and I'll have to post it when I get to a computer again. All of our games are for fun and not super competitve. So what so you think about opening up lores of beasts and life up to hero casters? Would that be to broken of a house rule?

I havent played wood elves for about 4 editions now. But what I do remember of them was that you want to be fast and shoot A LOT! I would run my lords and heros on eagles and have them fly and shoot and keep shooting and then when anyone attempts a charge just fly away. I remember fast and mobile, and alot of shooting. Other than that I cant offer much help, Sorry.

As for a house rule allowing a Spellsinger to pick either the Lore of Beasts or the Lore of Life instead of just Athel Loren magic ... it would hardly be broken IMHO and would fit very well from a fluff perspective. It will even offer you new 'build' options, especially when it comes to creating a 'melee oriented' Wood ELves list ... if there ever was such a thing (actually, yes there was *smirk*).

As for a 1.500 pts. WE vs. VC list ... it depends A LOT on what your vampiric opponent likes to bring to the table, really.
I could probably write you a nice 'counter' list if I had some input on the exact units. All in all, list tailoring is ultimately boring IMHO, but with WE it sometimes is the only way to score a victory against some of the nastier lists and / or armies out there at the time being.

Essentially, with a WE list at this points level, you have to focus. It won't help if you try to squeeze in a little bit of everything.
Nowadays, most folks either opt for a 'massed shooting' list with magical support, or a 'wood' sort of list as it's lovingly called, featuring models with the Forest Spirits rule almost exclusively.
Don't get me wrong, a WE list will feature massed amounts of shooting anyways in 95% of the cases, but it is nevertheless possible to build a list that will be very able to hold against a charge as well.
Another option is a pure 'avoidance' list: maximal amount of scouting and skirmishing units. Your opponent will most likely not be able to touch them except with screams, magic or Hexwraiths. this can quickly escalate into a pure points denial strategy, depending on the toughness of your opponents units, and can become quite boring. Yet, it is a viable tactic with the current WE.
A fast cav spam list is possible as well ...
As is an Eternal Guard list ...

As you can see, in my opinion there's a lot more possible 'builds' than just shooting or 'wood', especially when you're not playing overly competitive.
But it ultimately depends on what you want to play, like to play, and what your opponent decides to field.
Give us a heads-up and I'll see what I can write for you ...

Sorry I was slow getting it posted. The issue in my house when we play is my girlfriend absolutely hates the list building aspect so I end up making both list if I want to play.

I made this one before I thought about a vamp list but it has ghouls horrors ME and zombie bunker for mn and ethereal chaff. More or less. I waned a not super hard army and no tg.

It's a bit tricky, if I may dare say so, that you're the one who's writing both lists, since the element of surprise will be eliminated completely when it comes to unit choices, possible drops and magical ites, etc.
So, I suspect, the lists won't be exactly over the top most of the time (which isn't a bad thing in a friendly environment at all). I can see the reasoning behind it though, I often help 'new' players that are just starting out with their initial lists, giving them one or two to toy around with, so they have an easier time starting their own lists.
As for the VC list, a ghoul-theme with, well Ghouls, Crypt Horrors, zombies and a Master Necromancer sounds like good fun at this points slot, spice up with other units to personal preference.

Now, the WE ...

Nothing to criticize here, expect I always tend to grant a 5++ or 4++ ward save to my general. Against VC it is debatable: There's no shooting in the traditional sense and a Spellweaver isn't meant to end up in a melee anyways, yet 'Death' lore sniping is a distinct possibility (not if you exclude it from your gf's list, but against VC in general).

The eagle-born Noble is not a bad build in general. As for yours though ...
Do you need a mobile BSB in this list ?
He's got a 4+ and a 2++ vs. flaming. Maybe good enough against VC, but against an army with only minimal amounts of shooting capabilities this eagle rider would drop dead soon. Needs a better ward save and the 'Charmed Shield'.
The 'Shrieking Sword' is nigh useless gainst VC, except for when you take it to be fear resistant yourself, which I suspect is the reason for including it. But then, do you want for your fragile noble to get engaged in melee ? I'd say those points are better spend elsewhere.
'Hail of Doom Arrow' is an awesome magic item. Against VC ... not so sure. Yes, it allows you delete half a unit of enemy models when you get lucky, or even wipe out a small unit of skirmishers or fast cav. Wiping out only half a unit won't do any good against VC in most of the cases though, due to IoN. The 'Arrow' can be put to good use against Terrorgheist and MEs, but it's not an auto-include for me.

While I can see the appeal of a flying BSB, I'd eventually try to come up with a more melee-oriented Noble (It's heresy, I know.) to support your Drayds and Treekin. Even if only experimental, it might give you new ideas and food for thought.

They are not bad, but will still struggle against Crypt Horrors, wounding only on 6's when not firing at short range.

Nothing to add here, another shooty unit.
Although, if this is the unit you'll be deploying your Spellweaver in, I'd consider giving her 'A Resplendence of Luminescents' for ethereal chaff clearing.

Dryads are awesome in their own right, though I'd consider upping their size to ten. I oftentimes use nine plus Branchwraith or eleven plus Branchwraith, but this is personal taste, nothing more. If you only use them for flanking against VC units, then eight will do you fine as well.

The Treeman will definitely chew through VC units.

I have this same thread running on the wood elf forums but you guys are a million times more active. So thanks for that :)

It's true making both list it tedious but Vampires are her army and I definitely get input as to what she likes or what did and didn't work.

I was under the impression that ward saves are mandatory for lord casters but these other WE players mostly leave it at home so idk.

My noble was 2 different ones that I melded together. A typical bsb w/ magic bow and doom arrow and a alter noble w/ SoM and stone of rebirth. I wanted a noble that could help drive up CR but my army needed a bsb. If it works fine without one then I would gladly go back to a melee noble.

Thanks for the food for thought.

Wouldn't let me edit..
Refined list based off two house rules: hero beast and life casters and only elven forest spirits lose their ward save to magic attacks.

Eagle

I'm not sold on the spites. I was thinking a ruby ring of ruin maybe better for drawing out DD and piling wounds on regen units. I had a wsv on the lord but I think dropping it for the eagle helps a bit more and if he can get throne that helps with miscast. Let me know what you guys think. I'll get a vamp list posted and I'm gonna see if we can squeeze a game in this weekend.

Thanks a lot guys.
