Najo, why lose the asf for the GW and not take an ogre blade?
So, there is a bit of background on that. I'm super big on efficiency. Since vampires came out for 8th, my learning the new army lead me to a series of army building and fine tuning choices. I'd ask myself what works and how to improve what doesn't. So, first choice as a
VC player is do you field a vampire lord. If the answer is yes, the next question is do I gear him for just combat or magic or both. Points wise its more efficient to put levels on a VL than take a MN. But, you lose an arcane slot and you're making the VL a bigger target. Ironically though, the whole goal is don't get the VL general killed. So, adding magic levels to him isn't a big deal (unless you miscast all the time) as you are putting him in combat as recessively as possible but not rushing his life. Next choice is, what are the best tools for damage output. +2 strength is at the top of that list.
Now, I play very offensive. I use vampire lore as it works with that style better. And, black periapt synergizes with a control style magic phase. To me, absolute essentials are VL stat line, +2s, level 4 and 2 VoL, BP, red fury and VHDM movement and rerolls. Those pieces built into any vampire army will maximize that army for my play style. It doesn't matter if it's BK bus, scream bomb, infantry, etc.
So, great weapon came from a couple factors. 1) I could get BP in on VL, keep 4++ and not need MN. 2) GW works against BotWD. 3) GW can join a unit with flaming banner and just destroy beasts of nurgle and chimera. 4) with two VHDM, I almost always have reroll and VL going at I7 is damn good. So, go ogre blade and lose all that and kill elves at I with redundant reroll against everyone else or go GW have all those options (you should see HE players faces when a VL tears the BotWD unit apart and they get no saves) but have to let the elves attack before VL, which they attack before everything else any way. And, I can always stick night shroud on a hero and have him stand next to VL if I want to slow those elves down, but whatever.
So, GW+QB works as an alternative to ogre blade. Trading bloodline powers for opening up magic item points. Just plan your fights and use of VHDM well and he will shred.
