I find the worst stat regarding this is probably tactical knowledge. It's so tempting to give a character high tactical knowledge, and then in a fight scene simply say use all troops in a frontal assault, and add ALL the explosions!
So many times could a glorious RP (or professionally written story, for that matter) have ended with, "And then Count John said, 'This is going to be a long siege'". This might of course be the right decision tactically but would prolong the storyline by 20 years and kill suspense, unless of course the story skipped most what happened in the next 20 years (which would of course be tactically brilliant but utterly boring military moves).

I also think the stat is a little subjective in that it sort of represents actually being the General in charge, I have characters with low leadership but they've actually got a decent grasp of tactics it's they can't actually lead and aren't great at being responsible for making decisions in the moment

As for the characters being smarter than characters, Niklaus might just be smarter than me. Certainly not less so.
