@Farmer7574 Wow so you have your OnG ready "soonish"? Cannot wait for you to start the VC plog ;) The savages look great, could you tell me how you did the bone? I haven't started painting my crypt horrors yet, and I want my Haunters bone-weapon look just like those.

@Sessioni You got it buddy, almost done with these! (Ive got loads of forest goblin stuff but they'll be waiting a while as I'm looking forward to start on the VC. In the process of buying stuff for it at the moment.

The bone on these savage orcs was done like this: Basecoat Zandri Dust / Wash Seraphim Sepia / Layer Ushabti Bone / Highlight Screaming Skull.

Thanks for the recipe! I have to buy some new paints anyways, my black ink kinda exploded on my pallette (painted about 80 bases with it) :D

@Sessioni Ouch, you painted 80 bases at once? I'd go nuts if I had to do that. Besides, I love basing at the end - it's a nice & easy stage to completion.

Speaking of basing, I've done these guys' bases to look like an arid reddish land like that of Durotar in World of Warcraft. I've held off on detailing so far because I'm not sure what I want to go with;

-patches of dead grass
-palm trees
-cacti
-patches of scorched grass

What are your thoughts on any or combinations of the above?

@Farmer7574 Yes, I had to, I didn't want to waste the ink :D I usually paint the model first (or some stages at least) and then base it, but I don't wait till every model is painted in the regiment before I start basing them. Basing for me is like a "break" when painting patches of models, and it gives you a motivation boost when you see how they look fully painted.

Considering your basing. I think they would look great and unique (well I haven't seen a jungle themed OnG-army) with the palm trees and other jungle plants, plus it would fit savages and the night goblins like a choppa in the jaw. Cacti sounds awesome too, how would you make them? I have never seen a miniature cacti :D I can see you have really thought your options through, as they all sound very good ideas, it must be hard to choose which one to use.

@Sessioni Well when I started brainstorming my paint scheme 18 months ago, I decided my orcs are from an area much like Durotar in World of Warcraft, so have painted them in sun-baked colours and based them appropriately reddish brown to match my inspiration below:

In this area nothing much grows but cacti, there are also a few tufts of dead grass. This is where I imagine my savage orcs roam, hunt, make their crude weapons, beat each other and rally for war. Here are some cacti I found (just eBay search 'model scenery cacti' if interested):

The night goblins dwell in the caves which line the many hills in this area. There are also pools and isles which are filled with small forests of palm trees and life, which is where I imagine my to-be-painted forest goblins and their spiders roam. Here are some trees I found (again, eBay search 'model scenery palm trees' if interested):

I'd paint these trees myself as I'm looking for a better looking green then the flat green that's fresh out of a mold.

I'm thinking of doing everything but the forest goblins with small tufts of dead grass and some cacti here and there. Maybe a random palm tree unit filler here and there too to tie it in with my forest goblins, which I'm thinking of basing with a lot of mini palm trees and big palm tree unit fillers to emphasize that they're forest goblins. I'm still unsure though so am looking for opinions.

NOTE: These images are not mine. I don't claim any ownership over them.

Fresh out of the workshop, a handful of squigs:

I used WarbossTae's tutorial on YouTube for the skin as I love the appearance of the flesh and the contrasting bellies they have. Own recipes for the other stuff. I love the look of these and currently have some gnarly squigs in the mail plus another few laying around waiting to be done. Next up will be some herders to keep these guys in line. The finish line is on the horizon now...

Sorry for the late reply guys, I must have bypassed your messages due to the picture overload here (must resize those pics at some point...)

@Draykorinee and @Adam_Barrow Cheers gents, I'm glad you like what you see. Quite a bit of time spent on these orcs in particular, it's a bit of a morale drain laying 10 savages' skin but really pays off in the end.

I've been brainstorming diorama/filler & painting scheme ideas for the zombies and, I think, they're probably going to be my starting point for the VC project (save for the 40 skellies & 20 GG already done, although I'm considering repainting small parts of these as I progress through the army).

@Hellion Nox Cheers, I'm glad you like them.

Don't know how they are to field mate, I don't play WFB yet unfortunately as I've only become interested in the games over the past 18 months but live in rural China where there aren't any gaming stores and whatnot (even English speakers are scarce!). A shame really.

I've been a long time avid painter of GW stuff (mostly undead) for years and have never played. I've got a few colleagues over here that are willing to have a go at it and we can hopefully make it an end-of-the-work-week event with a few beers in the evening once I bring back the books, etc. that are currently in my home country (with a mountain of minis).

Generally I just buy stuff I like but I'm really looking forward to getting into it and playing the expanding armies that I have.

@Adam_Barrow Yeh that's also an objective I'm working on. I've got a small group of VC (being built up in the near future) and about 2000+ in OnG.

My colleagues here don't care much for painting and whatnot but are fans of board games. I figure we'll start off with baby steps - small points games and go from there. We'll be playing 8th but I'm good with that.

Great paintwork on those Greenskins are you a professional painter Farmer? wish I could paint that well, but one can get away with murderous painting skills with zombies lol.

I skimmed through the thread again and I must say I love the Savage shaman, and everything about it. The feathers, stone knife, wood textures and everything. Maybe I should move to Northern Finland and have my own time so I could get my army painted :D

@wheeljack Cheers. Nah I'm not a professional painter. I've just enjoyed artistic stuff since I was really young. Drawing, painting and building, etc.

Zombies are going to be interesting for me. I paint stuff tidily and in a uniformed way but zombies is where you kinda have to be a bit sloppy with them to show their nature. Currently trimming mold lines off 40 Mantic zeds while I'm not painting, so I'll be getting some paint on those at some point in the near future. They're going to be fun to paint!

@Sessioni I can't take credit for GW's design work. :D They've done a really good job with this Wurrzag mini. This guy was really fun to paint and and the amount of details on him really make him unlike anyone else in the Warhammer universe. And hats off to them for their great design work on the savages with their flint weapons and their bone & animal hide armour, these guys are the reason I ended up starting my OnG army.

The feathers were fun to choose colours for and surprisingly easy to paint. I played around with lots of colours but I went for just 2 bright colours in the end, inspired by those of a parrot's wings. Multiple colours just threw the model's appearance off.

My missus is working in Shanghai for a few months so I've had a bit more painting time than usual. How has progress been going on your army these days?

@Farmer7574 Okay well I didn't realize the wood texture was molded :D But still a very nice paint job on him!

Well I painted my giant's base and two skeletons yesterday. Not progressing very much, but today I'll try to put paint on the last 8/40 Skeletons and 2/6 Blood knights. Today starts the WHFB and Flames of War -weekend, which I'm attending. Maybe seeing fully painted armies in there will give me a rush to get the army done myself, I hope so at least.

@Sessioni Nice one. Your blood Knights rock and I'm tempted to 'borrow' your idea to save me from selling a kidney to buy the GW ones.

I also picked up a giant kit for the spares as it was going for just £20. I think I'll make use of all those spares for OnG & VC fillers then donate him to my ogre army for future painting, he will feel right at home with the big half-naked blokes. *roll Blue Oyster Bar music*

Have a blast at Flames of War.

@Farmer7574 Feel free to borrow any ideas! Glad to hear you don't have to sell your organs. Speaking of organs, check my plog for Giant update ;)
So you did buy yours too! And with a great price also, have a blast using the spare parts, they're cool aren't they.

It is my first time playing Flames of War, but I'm so hyped about it, I have been reading the rules already, but I don't have any models yet. My friend will lend me an army so I can try it out first.

@Sessioni I'm overwhelmed with ideas. Despite there being loads in the box, there aren't enough to do everything I want to.

I'm thinking I could make a Squig filler with the flat goblin being bounced on by a squig. Or being pounded into the ground by an ogre. Or even give him wings and make him part of the doom diver base, as if he came back like a boomerang and splatted back where he started. If only I could copy them and make a bunch... :)

@The Sun King Cheers! Glad you like what you see.

I'll be carrying on with VC pretty soon now that I'm nearly done with this army (for now) and have a pretty clear idea of what I want to do.

@Hellion Nox They all follow the same method besides the colours.

Orcs'/Goblins' Skin:
Basecoat Waaagh Flesh, Wash Seraphim Sepia, Layer Loren Forest, Highlight Straken Green, tidy up with very thinned down Loren Forest.

Squigs' Skin:
Basecoat Mephiston Red, Wash Carrobourg Crimson, Layer Mephiston Red, Layer Evil Sunz Scarlet, Highlight Evil Sunz 1:1 Wild Rider Red, tidy up with very thinned down Evil Sunz Scarlet, then again with thinned Mephiston.

Squig bellies were blend-layered using Mephiston Red 1:1 Bugman's Glow, Bugman's Glow, Bugman's Glow 1:1 Kislev Flesh, then highlighted with Cadian Fleshtone.

My basic method is always water down the paints. Go at least paint 1:1 water (especially with the layers/highlights). When I finish the last highlight I'm not too careful about fine lines, but instead paint them thick. Then I tidy this up with a very thinned down version of the previous colour (it's mild transparency creates a mid tone between the two colours while tidying the paint job).

Hope this helps.
