Hi there I've been back into warhammer for about a year running dark elves and fancied a change.

This is my idea for a 2.5K vampire list with characters on foot and no terrorgiests (I’m just trying to be a little bit different). I still want to do tournaments and be competitive.

Lords
Vampire Lord 400pts
Great weapon, Night Shroud, other tricksters share, talisman of preservation, red fury, quickblood, lvl 1 vampires

master necromancer 200pts
lvl 4 vampires

Heroes
Vampire 238
BSB, Great weapon, redfury, armour of silvered steel, iron curse icon, lvl 1 shadow

Necromacer 90
scroll, lvl 1 vampires

Necromacer 90
book of arkhan, lvl 1 vampires

Core
20 zombies 70
standard

20 zombies 70
standard

38 ghouls 390
ghast

5 dire wolves 50
doom wolf

5 dire wolves 50
doom wolf

Special
2 bats 38

10 crypt horrors 380

Rare
Varghulf 175

Varghulf 175

total 2395

Game plan
The 2 vampires go in the big block of ghouls which with the addition of the 2 red fury vampires should hit like a truck. Using the book of arkhan and vanhels to get re rolls to hit the vampire lord should hit first against most things first as they will has ASL from the shroud. The hero should be safe from most normal troops given his 2 up save (he will struggle against elite inf and killing blow in which case i will try and miasma him away with the lore of shadows attribute)

The necros will go in the zombie units and be kept out of harms way. I chose lore of shadow for miasma in order to cause issue for my opponent with reduced movement and or WS as it become a key factor.

The dire wolves and bats are chaff/warmachine hunters and they have champions if they need to form darts. The necromancers will summon more chaff as required.

I picked the varghulfs over the big T dogs as i wanted to change up the auto includes. Also they can march when outside of the general as they are vampiric.

Any comments are most welcome.

You have a lot of resilience in the list but not much killing power. For instance how will you get through armour other than with the vamps? GW also waste the high init. of the vamps as they give you 'always strikes last' and you don't really want this. I would recommend magic weapons instead i.e. ogre blade, etc.

This is true but I keep seeing BotWD in so many of the lists I play.

I know I have a heavy reliance on the vamps to win me the game. It's a hard balance, I'll apply some thought to it, how would you add more killing power?

The Lord should strike first due the shroud + quick blood, I was going to put the BSB on the outside of him I.e. Front looks below like so he gets the bonus from shroud too:

BSB, Lord, ghoul, ghoul, ghoul, ghoul, ghast, ghoul, ghoul, ghoul

I wouldn't not take magic weapons just because of botwd. The thing you should learn about vampire counts is that if there's a single unit that is giving you trouble (like a unit with BotWD) then just throw core at it. Let it chew through zombies and skeletons all game. We don't need to kill units to take them out of the game, just swarm them with zombies. Skeletons are even better because of the 5+/parry save. I wouldn't bother with a unit of 2 fell bats unless you have a high lvl vamp wizard with summon creatures. I agree that you don't seem to have much punch in your army. The varghulfs are nice but won't be able to take on infantry blocks by themselves. If you want something that is atypical maybe consider a unit or two of morghasts? It says in their profile that they can be taken in a normal Vampire Counts army.

sorry for double post but I would also give your vampire lord the lore of death instead of shadow. You'll get some kind of assasination spell. At the very least you'll get spirit leech which is pretty sweet on a ld10 model.

In regards to the GW Quickblood combo, I like it. Personally, I too have felt the agony if BoTWD often and I know of more than one successful forum member who uses GW and QB to counteract it.

All in all I like the list, it is very resilient and there isn't as much killing power as we can bring but it's unique and that's a good thing. I do, however, feel you may be swapping two TG's out for 2 Varghulf, have you considered any of our more esoteric rare options?
