It's taking the thread off at a little tangent but still relevant. How are the hexwraiths at flank defence on a bus? I'm taking 5 as that's all I can fit in at 2000 points will that be enough?

I did find the time today to listen to the whole bad dice podcast linked earlier and it was actually a good listen as a whole, just the one part I listed to before was a bit naff out of context, so I stand corrected.

I was assembling some black knights while I listened and ended up test rolling combat using red fury on the baby vamps and it seems that it's better than quick blood (assuming your points/comps allow it).

Also, gearing the vamps...

Vampire Lord
Red Fury, Quickblood, the other tricksters shard, talisman of preservation, ogre blade, barded nightmare, shield, heavy armour,
LVL4-Vamps

538pts

Vampire
Red Fury, enchanted shield, dragonbane gem, dispell scroll barded nightmare, lance, heavy armour, LVL2-Death

253pts

Vampire
Red Fury, obsidian amulet, iron curse icon, heavy armour, lance, barded nightmare, shield, LVL1-vamps

220pts

That's the build I'm currently planning on using at 2500pts... I'm wondering if I should try and squeeze beguile onto the lord, and if I should somehow try and squeeze nightshroud in there? (but I think that would take an entirely new wk/vamp as I don't think I can spare any of the kit off of the existing ones). Unless it's worth dropping the ogre blade and just using a lance on the lord? but that means he's not gonna be so hot in round 2.

Vampire Lords should never leave home without Charmed Shield. Also Red Fury and Quickblood are almost the same on a baby vamp except RF is more expensive

Hmm... to fit charmed shield on the VL I'd have to drop either the other tricksters shard or the ogre blade... how important is the other tricksters shard?

I like Sword of Anti Heros on Vampires as honestly the only time you really need more than S5 is cav and characters

I guess you'll still be str 7 against a lot of units (and str 5 is fine for those that don't have characters in) and benefit of extra attacks...

Could do that switch and swap 1x fellbat for beguile and that might be a nicer VL.

I guess I have been living under a rock. Sword of Anti-Heroes is far more awesome than I originally thought.

I'd say that there are plenty of other times you want more than S5. Monsters (really helps when taking down that Abomb that you need to get through), anything with T4 (Orcs, Dwarves, Ogres and plenty of other stuff), high Armor Save (Ironbreakers, Chaos Warriors).

That being said, I'm trying the Sword of Anti Heroes on my next build as I do think it will be highly effective based on what I fought last tournament with my Cav Bus.

RF is better in two regards.

1. More potential damage (up to 8 wounds from the baby vamp).
2. Synergism with Van Hels to get the rerolls. If you get a Van Hels off, all of a sudden RF becomes a lot better than Quickblood.

As much as I like the Sword of anti-heroes I prefer the Ogre blade. That way no matter what I run my VL into he's hitting at S7.

I find buses not useful unless you run at least 15 BKs plus 2 red fury vamps, unless you're playing inexperienced players of course. Only with all that (above) can you have enough firepower plus supporting ranks to widdle down ranks (5 wide and hordes) and break steadfast. Otherwise the bus gets flanked by crap troops and Calvary blocks are horrid against flank charges.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't dig the short bus.

I ran the bus under Comped guidelines of MAX 15 models including Characters, and ended up with 3 Vampires and 12 Knights, and it did just fine. I agree that 15 models total is the lower limit to effectiveness however.

I feel like I'm missing something here. Does the SoAH do something crazy? It only gives extra S and A for enemy characters in base contact with the bearer, right? (Not like allied characters/base contact with unit/...)
This also meaning in a challenge you would normally get +1/+1? Isn't the Ogre Blade still better then (with some exceptions against character spamming races like skaven/goblins)?

Oh, and sorry if this is a bit off-topic xD

+1A/+1S for each character in base-to-base contact with him AND in contact with his unit.

Hey guys I'm pretty new and have never used a bus, but am looking to some time this month maybe. What formation should they be in (I'm assuming always a long formation with vamps at front to kill stuff?). How about,in a unit of 12 and then a unit of 15? Thanks guys :)

This is what I run for my bus, and I've won a couple of local tournaments with it.

I have been running mine in a lance formation with 9 Bk's and 3 characters. Nice front row of T5 characters that are REALLY hard to hit, kill, or even wound.... And you don't have to worry about any r&f getting attacked.

The goal is to smash in, use your Vamps to generate a ton of res, and to break their steadfast; running them 3-wide, i.e. no ranks, defeats the purpose of the Bus and will get you tied down and stuck in for a painful flank charge vs. the wrong opponents.

Their are pros and cons for running them either way. Just depends on the tactical situation. And the same bus can be run either way. I have had great success running them in a lance formation. And since I do have a Mousion themed list, cool is the rule. My Bret Baron leading his long dead troops is fun to play. And still a very competitive list.
