Well it was a little deeper than that, although it tried a bit much at being Lord of the Rings, I think. But dark chaarcters a-plenty, unlike LotR. Not a great read, but good fun.
I think the author couldn't decide whether to style Zahaak's legion as Tomb Kings or Vampire Counts though, with Scorpions and light archer cavalry in one battle, Black Knights and Banshees in others. Personally if you want to recreate it, then you might as well have a pop at creating your own characters. Here's how I would represent Zahaak:
Wight King
von Carstein Ring
So only a slight deviation, really.
Then as the army use Wight Kings and Necromancers (liches) for characters. No Vampires or Ghouls in the army, but replace the 6" march thing as being for Wight Kings instead. With little magic it'll be a complete grindfest, but should be fun. You could even make a campaign of it, starting off only with Skeletons and Grave Guard, then the army becoming more "fresh" as the games continue...
