I want to know how everyone calculates points. The way we're currently doing it is most likely very wrong.

At the end of someone's turn (like, after close combat results) after the dust has settled we look at all the models we had removed from the board and figure out how much they cost and write those points on a chalkboard we have in the room. We do that for both sides. Then we clear those back to the shelf they came from.

It keeps a running tally so we know if we should just call it quits in round 4 or something.

The reason I guess this is probably wrong is because with IoN and some other spells you put new people back on the board. The way we do it, if these get killed they are counted again. I think that's wrong?

How does everyone else do it to get around that issue?

The BRB doesn't say anywhere how or when to actually do point calculation.

After the game is finished you calculate points. You only get victory points for destroying an entire unit or forcing it to flee off the table.
Individual models, unless characters do not award VP's.
For example a 40 man unit of ghouls is worth 400 VP's. You don't score any Vps until the entire unit is destroyed- every last model!
Hope that helps.

BigBadBat is correct with one exception:

When a unit breaks from combat (which ours never do, but y'know, hypothetically) the Standard Barer is slain and the enemy gains 25 VP for a captured banner, even if the unit as a whole survives the game and therefore awards no VP.

This is all on page 143 in the BRB (as well as some other ways to get VP's etc.)

You could still essentially do what your doing with the tallying as long as you are following the rules pointed out by the above posters (and page 143). I think most tourney players tend to try and do this in their heads anyways, at least I try to.

That's very handy thanks.

I have one more question though, what if you create a unit with Raise Dead. Do you never get vicotory point even if you wipe it out completely? If that's true, I guess you just have to keep track of that unit as being a "pointless" unit throughout the game as there's no other indicator to set it apart from any other zombie/skeleton units you already have on the board.

What about creatures bound to you in a Storm of Magic are they worth their binding cost? Also, the Storm of Magic cataclysm spell that summons a unit of Grave Guard and a Wight King, does that not award points of any sort either?

summoned units are not worth any points unless otherwise specified so raise dead and the SoM spell that summons grave guard both create units with a 0 points value. It's pretty easy to remember which units were raised though so I wouldn't worry about marking it down.

As for bound creatures in SoM, they are worth the points that you paid for them if they die (even if they die using the unbind spell)

Tallying VP really isn't tough.

At the end of the game, just pick up your army list and run through each entry. Is unit X still on the table? Yes? No points. No? Points!

Then add the bonuses for banners and generals and tell the other guy how many points your army gave up.

Sun king - you playing the wrong edition or something? Didn't you know about the all new upgraded sword of might?!...

Haha wouldn't surprise me Aren - took me a year to find out that there was an item called Staff of Sorcery :D

You didn't know about the staff of sorcery? that's my bread and my butter, and the plate I'm eating it from, and my teeth.

One more question came up while I was playing with the correct rules of not giving points until a unit is wiped out.

If a character is in a unit and he or she is killed but the unit survives are the character's points awarded?

What if a unit that had a character in it is wiped out except for the character? I know you can't raise the unit with IoN anymore so I would assume you'd also give out the points, right?

When a character dies, you get VP's for him. When a unit is destroyed or flees off board you also get points. They are purchased desperately and award VP's in the same fashion.
On a somewhat different note, if you have a character on a monster or a mount,in which they are not considered 1 model, you only get VP's for killing both rider AND mount.
Even different still, and this does not apply to VC as we never break from combat, but if the unit housing a bsb, or standard bearer of any type breaks from combat, they are removed as a casualty.
Hope that helps.

And when Lynks writes SoM he means Storm of Magic - the abbreviation says Sword of Might :D Oh how sweet it would be if sword of might also summoned GG

How sweet indeed i like that ability better than the stupid 75pt sword of scream cheese .. lol
