If you're still looking for a straw substrate, the cheapest that works tends to be to look in your local stores for some really cheap brushes. The ones meant to be disposable in the home improvement section. I'd gotten one that I've been trimming bits off of for straw with various things for a while, mainly for a stable I've been helping a friend with.

I was already considering picking up a Kentucky Fred Zombie (see here: http://cart.blackorc.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=80&products_id=506), so it wouldn't be a hardship.

Update time: Been trying to play more games of warhammer this year and really get some good game time in. Joined a local gaming club and took the Circus out for a spin, got some really positive reactions on the army and it is now just about listable for a 1.5k game

Started work on the BSB now:

Not put an update on for over a month, busy summer and all.
Here is a quick pic of my crypt horrors, my soon to be bloodied circus bears.I Plan to have 6 in total on 40mm bases all with various circus gear

No update for a while, mainly because I got the army to a playable state and spent more time playing than painting or converting.
Now the holiday's are here I do plan to pick things back up again so here is the latest update:

I wasn't entirely happy with original the black coach, so took an axe to it and put some of the new horses in and dressed the coach a bit. Much happier with the progress now

The BSB has come along and is almost finished

The Bears are working our really well so bumped them to 9, all in various stages of conversion

And the freaks are almost at 30 strong with many painted up now

More updates to follow early next year, if I can get hold of a decent camera I will aim to photo the entire army.

Update time:

All in all the army is approaching 2k in points now and I am getting in plenty of games! In fact I am planning on taking the army off to a few clubs or tourne's in the south of England this summer.

Plenty of pics this month first of is the flying monkey vargheist (baghera miniature) he fits the 40mm base really well in the end

Modelled a jacket on him and 3 more are well on the way.

More bears also this month as well, first one I put in a cage for good measure.....he got out

Few bikes and balls on the others to Circus them up

Both units play really well and have made the army a lot more competative from just zombies, dire lions and ghouls.
I am currently working on a big terrorgheist project and a wight king as well

When they are ready I will share on the forum, still trying to find a decent wide lense camera for a good whole army shot to post.
As always, comments and miniature suggestions are very welcome!

BTW, If anyone plays in the Berkshire area of England and fancy's a game, my local club and I are always after fresh players so PM me if interested

I've commented here more than once, I believe, but I've never mentioned your basing work. Such a great way to bring the whole army under the big tent. What is it you're using for the wood shaving? Some pre-packed shavings, or something you're making yourself?

Dude, I just spent the last 30 minutes reading this thread and, without a doubt, this is the coolest, creepiest themed Undead army (or any WH army for that matter) I have ever seen. You are a mad genius, with the painting and converting skills of a frickin' king! @Adam_Barrow: Yes the basing work is made from basic pet sawdust but I mashed it up and sived it to make it as fine as possible before applying a watered down paint mix to darken it. Glad you like it! often it is the base that gives the mini that Circus feel

I wanted to take a pic of all the painted mini's so far for this little update, so here is the army to date

Almost complete: 2 more Vargheists and the modelling of the Terrorgheist is really getting there now, pics to follow soon
