Hey Guys.

My weekend was actually waaay more busy than I was expecting... I've got the basic shield design in Blender and done some basic lighting, no wings or skull as of yet though.
I'll keep you posted of progress as it is made.

Cheers, Monkey

That sounds like a great idea Raven, added to the list.

Don't worry Monkey, let us know when it's done and chuck it into the thread. I'm sure it will be worth the extra time!

]Just a quick update to say I've got the skull and wings modelled. I've uploaded a basic preview image to show you where I am currently. Next step is to finalise the materials and finish the lighting.

Any comments and suggestions are welcome. All of the materials but the shield design are procedural, so are easily tweaked to fit. I've also attached a texture template for the design, so if anybody wants to try and designing some f the awards they can!

Cheers, Monkey

P.S. I'm probably going to change the skull to be gold, any suggestions for other materials are welcome. I may remodel the eyes to represent gems as well, we'll see what everybody else thinks.

That looks great to me, although the skull in the centre will almost certainly be displaced by whatever motif is relevant to that particular medal? We will of course use it for one of them, unless people want it to be a permanent feature and have motifs over the top of it? I just feel that way it becomes a bit cluttered.

Great work though!

I forgot to mention that the skull in the middle is just a place-holder. I only put it there to test whether the UV mapping was ok (which it is). The skull and red back-drop are what will be replaced with whatever people put in the texture template.

As all the modelling is done (apart from a few minor tweaks), people can start work on designing the various medals.

Hey Guys!

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to bring you all another progress update: I've pretty much finished the material and lighting tweaks to the image, and I've discovered Blender has a useful feature for rendering images with totally transparent backgrounds (I was using a green-screen like technique before, but it always left a little bit of the colour round the edges).

I've also updated the heraldry in the middle as an example of the kind of finish that can be achieved. If people want to start throwing ideas at me, I can see how they'd look.

Cheers, Monkey

P.S. The image actually looks a little pink, I may dull down that particular light slightly, what do you think?

I really like it as well! Good job! More detail will be a waste as it wont be seen! Can't wait to see more!

I haven't got much work done lately (I've been very busy), but I did come up with some ideas:
  • Chalice for the long service award
  • Flaming skull for the conversion award
  • Skeletal hand with ring for the member's member award
  • Fangs for the Recruiter award
  • Sword with wings for the tactics award

Sadly I drew them all up in my sketchbook which I foolishly left in college over the weekend. If anybody else has suggestions I can do a few quick mock-ups to show what they might be like.

Cheers, Monkey

Not being particularly gifted in terms of actually making the medals, I look more to these guys for the actual artwork. Being volunteers we can't really dish out who will do what, so I rely on the good-naturedness of CN for now! :clown:

Ha, good naturedness! You wish...

Ahem, back on topic:-
Not got any solid work to show, as it's approaching xmas time (I was also 21 3 days ago, so am still recovering from the shock!). I may be working from home next week, so could have some more to show then.

If not it's nearly the christmas holidays so I should get some mroe done then.

I've got a rough draft for the Dark Transmuter award done. Any comments/critiques are welcome. I feel it may be a little too dark, but what do you guys think?

I'll try and get another draft done today, and hopefully should get some more done this week.

Cheers, Monkey

EDIT: I've just compared the colours in the render to the colour in the original. The white in the render is slightly more pink than in the original, but otherwise spot on. I'll tone the pink down slightly and then it should be good to go.

Looks nice. I'd maybe position it a bit lower, and make it a bit bigger to stand out better. Also, I'd suggest brightening the wings a bit, so they can be more visible to both dark and bright forum theme users (right now they are close to blending in with the dark theme background). Really liking the texture and shading on the background.

May I try my luck on designing some of your suggestions if I'll have time? And if I manage to make any decent designs, that is.

I'll try giving your suggestions a go.
Feel free to design all the logos you want. I think that the more ideas we get, the better the final result will be. Plus I don't want to be seen as hogging the limelight and what I think looks good may not necessarily be to everyone's taste!

I would agree with Raven's suggestions: remember the medal will appear underneath people's avatars, so the emblem needs to be big enough to be both seen and be recognisable. But great work, don't worry about hogging anything!

Tried out Ravens suggestions. I've also tweaked the colour so it's more yellow rather than pink (I may have gone over the top though!).

What do you think?

P.S. I'm uploading a lot of images, is that likely to clog up the server?
I can go back and delete the old ones is necessary.

EDIT: Just noticed that I'd got the HDRi image I was using upside down.. woops!

I've replaced the image attached to this post with the corrected version, it's much closer to true colour now (the image was being lit from above by soil and not by sky).

I had the idea of doing a skeletal version of the hands from the Creation of Adam for the member's member award. I've tried a quick mock-up and have come to the conclusion that I'm not particularly good at drawing anything skeletal. If anybody else wants to have a go at it that would be brilliant. The artwork in question is here: wiki article

Cheers, Monkey

EDIT: I downloaded a high-res close up of the hands from google images. It should be easy to find, but if anyone does want to have a go I can send them the reference.

EDIT 2: I'm going away for New Year, so won't be contactable from the 31st for a few days.

Really like that last medal - superb work

Don't worry about the server either, we have lots of space! I am still doing some testing, however I will take some time this week to review what we currently have compared to the ideas, so we can come up with a set list we want in the new forum.

Again, appreciate all the work being put in.
