I went up against a HE player that had teclis in a unit of phoenix guard with THE banner and I managed a win, I just sent my two TG around killing all his other units (managed to kill all seven of his silver helmet with 1 scream hehe)

They use that banner and then seem to become quite defensive.

The only magic he really used was to snipe my master necromancer who was rocking a 3++ thanks to his own ward plus some magic res

Star Dragon/Star Lance is still a viable build, just leave the Book at home and run 2 lvl 2's on Death, BoTWD in White Lions and the Wakeen frost Phoenix.

I saw it played today and it twas nice.

Really? At 2400 ETC?

Must of been a balls Star Dragon build. Have you tried fitting a 140 point Prince with Gear on a 390pt Star Dragon with 600 points allowance before items or simple gear? It's not great.

Might as well be running around naked, or playing in a meta without cannons.

Prince
Star Dragon
Heavy Armor, Great Weapon, Shield
Star Lance, Golden Crown, Dragon Helm, PoFools

Comes in at 600 points, but the guy on top has a 2+ with a one-time 2++ ward.
On the charge with pot popped, he has 5 WS7 I8 ASF S7 attacks that ignores armor, before the Star Dragon swings himself with 6 attacks WS7 S7 I2. Then stomps.

Charmed shield > Dragonhelm

Remember, you gotta get both models to get the points. But yeah, it seems to work.

All in all I've played as, and against this new book many times, and they're not as strong as everyone is making them out to be. Don't get me wrong, there are some stupid powerful things in the book, but they're balanced out as well. The biggest thing you need to remember about playing against any elf army... they're all toughness 3. Wizard/hero killing with vargheists or varghulfs are so easy it's not even funny, hell sometimes our dogs can do it if you're desperate. All they did with this book was nerf the older competitive builds while buffing the rest of the book and moving units around to allow you to finally take something different with high elves and be able to compete. I'd put their book not even on par with ours, and playing against HE doesn't scare me at all (Unlike playing against dwarves).

I've only played a couple of battles against my buddy with his new 8th High Elves. So far I'm 0 for 2. I seem to be struggling.
That being said I don't think the new High Elves are OP so I'm looking forward to working out all new tactics to beat them.
One thing I am struggling to deal with is my buddies super-lord. He used to pull this shit in 7th but now he has some new toys to play with.
Anyway, he's running an Anointed of Asuryan on a frostheart, Orge Blade, Enchanted shield, OTS and Dawnstone. Which means he has 2+ rerollable, a 4++ and MR 2 . Causes -1 strength and ASL in base contact. 4 str 6 attacks from the Lord plus 4 str 6 attacks from the frostheart and a thuinderstomp. All causing rerolls on successful ward saves.

I realise its by no means godly but I'm really having trouble putting this guy down without tooled a lord up with obsidian blade + OTS in order to hunt him specifically. He does only have Ld 9 but unfortunately I have no Terrorgheist.

Any tips? I'm sure there's an easy solution I'm missing.

take ogre blade. at S7, he will only have a 6+ with reroll, but you'll wound the phoenix much more easily.

You'll also save 10 points :)

5+ rerollable.

The phoenix gives you -1S.

I versed a phoenix heavy High Elf army and got stomped pretty badly.
Though I was tired and knew that his Dragon Princes had Banner of the World Dragon but still managed to think sending my Vampire Lord with magic weapon and my terrorgheist screaming at them would be a good idea... That alone cost me the game as I couldn't kill any Dragon Princes and left them stuck to be charged by Silver Helms. Meanwhile Caradryan on Ashtari, Anointed on Flamespyre and a lone Frostheart combo-charged my other units and eventually whittled them down.
What I learnt though is that Phoenixes are nothing to worry about until you have multiples hitting you at once, on their own they are weak as hell. My humble skeleton warriors even killed his anointed in the last combat without any magic support.
What others have said before about the BotWD are correct, avoid that unit until you've cleared everything else. If Vargheists or my Varghulf got a flank charge off on those Dragon Princes then they would've been done for. Though if your up against the deathstar builds I wouldn't recommend that option at all. Watch out for small units of Silver Helms making sneaky charges to pile the combat resolution up in subsequent rounds of ongoing combats. Even their small amount of attacks is enough to push it heavily in their favour and making it very hard to recover especially since they strike first and can potentially minimise attacks coming back at them.
There was also 30 archers and 3 bolt throwers but they didn't do too much.
All in all, new High Elves aren't scary just the BotWD is hard to deal with our usual heavy hitters. A simple shift to using maybe one or two vampires with normal weapons can make it much less of an issue.

My most regular rival plays HE, and let me tell you, they are a monster in 8th ed. I've picked up a couple tricks though, which has served to keep me from losing EVERY game, just most of them.
Don't count on harming his phoenix guard any time soon (4+ ward save, add any lvl 1 mage casting a high magic spell from their unit, and that becomes a 3+. Also they ignore our fear.) Best bet is to ram something ethereal into their flanks to keep them out of the fight for a few rounds.
Never use vargheists against them, their 3 ranks of always strikes first plus the vargs complete lack of any saving throws makes them even more useless than usual.
Try to figure out where their Banner of the World Dragon is by tossing out some weak spells at each unit (for 50 pts, easily the strongest banner in the whole game, theyll always have one). This unit will be invincible against your magic, your grave guard, your black knights, your characters, and all your ethereal stuff. Try to swamp em with zombies or skellies then flank em with a monster or blood knights, depending on what the unit is. A good bet is to watch for any unit they put one or more mages in, as the banner gives them a 2+ ward against miscast results. Am I the only one that finds this banner so overpowered its ludicrous? (but hey, we get to spend a mere 75 points to give only blood knights a...4+ ward save against.....arrows...sigh)
Buff your magical defense with some scrolls or a channelling staff, even though Teclis is no longer a god their mages can still evaporate whole units with a lazy wave of their hand. Dont bother using offensive magic against them, their copious ward saves let them laugh off any spells you send back at them. Focus on buffing and restoring your own forces.
Really the best way to beat them is not to play VC against them, as we lack the proper tools for fight them. I've had infinitely more luck using Dwarves against them, shutting down their magic phase and bombarding them with war machines. My win/loss ratio with dwarves is about 50/50, while my VC will be lucky to win 1 game in 6 against a HE army.

They do indeed seem quite strong.

Well, Fear never works for me anyway.

A 4+ ward save isn't too bad. Don't get me wrong, it's very good - just not invincible. A VL/SGK can have OTS to even the odds. And, they're still T3, so for our core it's not much worse than fighting units with a 3+ or 4+ armour save. Dance and/or Vigour should help a lot.

As units go, they're just not something I fear.

IMO, that banner is the most broken item in 8th. No conditions, no downside, best save in the game, works in every phase, grants it to any characters in the unit, cheap enough to be taken on a regular standard, miles better than any comparable item.

One thing though - black knights and GG aren't affected by it, since neither have magic attacks.

Of course, whether they'll be effective against a banner unit is another matter entirely.

To me, it seems like the only real counter we have (not including chaffing it all game) are:

1) A blender lord without a magic weapon. I hear on a lot on other forums that our lords can just switch to non-magic weapons with no loss of combat ability. Although, I'm still waiting for suggestions regarding which mundane weapon I should use on my Ghoul King:

Should I use a Great Nothing (which does nothing), an Additional Hand Nothing (which does nothing), or a Hand Nothing and Nothing (which does nothing, and gives +0 to his armour save)? Choices, choices...

2) Crypt Horrors. So long as they can survive (and be raised fast enough) they seem like the unit with the best chance of standing up to the banner unit, and slowly killing it.

They have very good magic (possibly even the best of the new 8th edition books). I'm not sure why their lore needed 2 signature spells and a free +1 to cast. And, the Book of Hoeth is amazing - especially for dispelling.

Still, at least we're actually allowed to try and dispel their spells this time.

I think we'll only really struggle against the banner.

We have reasonable counters for most other things they can do.

I tabled a High Elf player running BotwD in a White Lion unit last week. Really wasn't that bad. I just threw a big block of Grave Guard at it and destroyed it . . . problem solved. I'm fairly confident my Ghoul horde would have done a similar job.

World dragon banner isn't overpowered. It just turns soft elves into an anvil against magical attacks. Hit it with your normal powerful stuff, swap out ogre blade for great weapon and quick blood and your good.

It really is.

You can argue about how badly we're affected by the banner, but it's still badly overpowered.

Nothing else in the game even comes close to the protection it provides, let alone for such a cheap cost.

And, let's not forget that this 'totally not overpowered' banner makes a high elf unit (along with any characters in it) virtually immune to an entire army book.

It's just a ridiculous item that has no place in 8th.

najo said:

Well, you're good against Elves. Against anyone else you've just lost your ability to carry a shied and your rerolls - and all because of a single banner in a single army that really isn't overpowered.

Also, what mundane weapon would you advise for a SGK? Should I use the Additional Hand Nothing (which does nothing) or a Great Nothing (which does nothing)? Choices, choices...

I'd use nothing if I ran a SGK, you're wounding them on 2's anyway. BUT, if they're running a mounted list and/or have a Frost Phoenix... ummm... Lol just leave the SGK at home.

Banner of the Win Dragon is broken indeed :(

If I remember correctly the everqueen also has an ability that gives the unit a good ward save against non-magical attacks. Plus, the high magic lore attribute increases ward saves, so in effect you could end up with a 2+ ward saves versus magic and a 2+ ward save versus standard attacks.

It is way too overpowered. Any of our etheral, WE forest spirits or any Daemons are made completely powerless. I really have no idea how you're supposed to defeat HE with Daemons. I suppose cast save or die magic on them continuously.

I did yes. Twice, once with the Everqueen in the unit which was a pain. But he was still learning how to use the HE so he didn't use it as effectively as he could. I think the first time I beat the unit with GG and flanking.

Completely off topic but, Oppenheimer, is your avatar from an old card game? I think it's called Spellfire or something similar?

I played USING the banner and barely squeezed a win against WoC. His general killed my White lion champ and was rewarded with Spawndom. Only reason I won.

Here is why the banner is not broken.

1) elves are easy to kill. They are T3. The only real anvil in the army is the frostheart phoenix and it can't be given ranks/ horded up. Phoenix guard is a soft anvil because of their 4+ ward, but eventually they die too.
2) most anvils are T5 or higher, or have a 2+ armor save along with some staying power (IE wounds, T4, etc). Plaugebearers with full regeneration, deep enough ranks and support from lore attribute of nurgle can almost be called an anvil. Elves do not really have a unit that can do this. Maybe dragon princes, but their vulnerable to a number of anti-armor options and small in number.
3) banner of the world dragon shifts the high T roll to the ward save roll. So instead of being a 4+ to hit, 6+ to wound and a 4+ save (like beasts of nurgle or crypt horrors often are), the elf unit is going to be 4+ to hit, 4 or 3+ to wound and then a 2+ to save against magic attacks and spells.
4) the high elf unit carrying this banner is completely vulnerable to most armies attacks. The banner does nothing for them than mitigate miscast damage. If their wizard is bunkering in the unit, now the unit is vulnerable to getting him killed if it engages, this means the banner involves risk when used in both an assaulting unit and a bunkering unit.
5) the unit is completely vulnerable to hexes and test based spells. It is completely vulnerable to flanks and rear charges. If engaged on two or more fronts, that unit can't bring its martial prowess to bear. If disrupted, that unit has lost most of its fighting power--no ranks fighting, no bonus.

As for daemons.
1)daemons have the best magic to counter this banner. Hexea that lower toughness, lower leadership, mess with movement..all good. They also have ways to kill with characteristic tests.
2) daemons have access to powerful lores like shadow and death, all things that help kill this unit. Hexes strip initiative and toughness away, templates attack characteristics. The elves die with no save.
3) daemon core is powerful, most of it either hits with multiple attacks or easily wounds elves. Daemons should easily get wounds on any elf unit.
4) daemons have superior movement. Furies, seekers, screamers, flying lords. Daemons move fast and hit hard. This allows easier flanking and combo charging.

All this banner does is make that unit an anvil against daemons and magic wielding characters. To defeat it, just bookend the unit with two of the heavier choices and throw a hex on it, it should collapse in one turn and you chase it down. Its not obvious or point and click, but that unit is killable.

Banner tends to be a major pain in my ass; immune to my characters magic weapons, immune to magic, immune to banshee screams, immune to all ethereals...
I did take it down with a clever tactic one time; tie them up in front with skellies, then flank charge them with a terror-causing monster. Luckily they ran, which caused their standard bearer to die automatically as they had been locked in combat.
