corpse cart is awesome. I wouldnt worry so much about the water effects, everything you've done so far is great Im sure it'll work out, get it done I want to see them finished  well done.

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

WOW! amazing army! I'm a big Lovecraft/ Cthulhu fan, so kudos :)
Okay, I have to ask: where's the head from your abyssal terror from?

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

The head comes off of the Reaper Eldritch Demon.

I love the monster thing pulling that corpse cart- it looks great! Also the switch of the necromancer to the ghoul on the cart is nice-he has a nice fresh pile of bodies for dinner :)

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. I plan on having a necromancer on one of the carts. To fill up that empty space on the other one, I'm planning on adding a ghoul. That should fit in to my ghoul-heavy theme very nicely!

At the moment, the ghoul is just placed in the back of the Cart. He'll be painted first and glued in later.

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

I've still been painting, with about 20 ghouls done and another dozen or so nearly so. I've been working and re-working how to do the bases, and think I'm pretty close. That's what's keeping me from getting pictures up, for the most part.

I just got some anchor bits in, though, which let me finish putting together my Cairn Wraiths. At the moment, my army has just the two wraiths and the Banshee. It's so weird having a shooting phase!

Anyways, this is the concept.
Banshee1.jpg

I think I'm going to have to make a third wraith, just to have a different pose. I don't know what possessed me to set both of these in the same pose.

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

The great thing is that cthulu is public domain, so if GW wanted, they could actual put it in the fluff.
That concept...so....epic.....I think I just creamed myself.

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

Crikey. This army is beautiful, of course I love the whole Cthulhu/pirate zombie thing, but your take on the various units is just wondrous. It would be a pleasure to see this army on the tabletop. Truly a labour of love.

Now more please.

Loving the Cthuluized ghouls.

It can be used for a sea Corpse Chart.

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

That is a nice link Vincenzo, great find!

I'm really liking those wraiths, though it is a pity about the same pose. Still the look really impressive, and I look forward to seeing the next one.

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

I have the Reaper version of that model. I wonder if I could just transfer the stack of bodies over....

But, for now, I've already gone through the trouble of making little boats out of my existing corpse carts. :)

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

Devo the army looks sick!!!! how did you do the mold for the bases for the water effects?

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

Danger! Rambling ahead....

I think I've got how to do the bases worked out, though I haven't done one "finished" base from beginning to end.

The process started with creating a mold of the water, which simply means a cubic mold that is as deep as I want the water to be plus the height of the base. The theory, which I think I described before, is to simply create the mold, place a finished model into the mold, then fill it with water effects. Easy, right?

It took four attempts before I had a good mold, mostly because it took forever for me to work out a way to create a true 20mm base with smooth sides. (I want the water effects to be smooth.)

This is a picture of a two-hole mold, with a ghoul in the right hole for descriptive sake.
BaseMold.jpg

Mixing the water effects took me three tries, too. The mold-making agents set up pretty fast, so you have to keep things moving. Mixing the water effects at that speed introduces a lot of bubbles, which really obscures the underwater bits of the model. I found out that water effects (and I'm using a two-part clear epoxy that doesn't shrink) takes *much* longer to set up. That means you can take more time mixing it. That's important, because if you are moving your stirring rod faster than about an ant would walk, you'll introduce air bubbles into the mix. I figured out that I need to spend about four to five minutes stirring the epoxy together to get a good mix without introducing bubbles. That's a long time, if you think about it.

Anyway, that gives you a nice, calm, flat water effect, which isn't what I want. (Backstory has these guys on the coast of a rough sea with sharp rocks all around.) This is where the Woodland Scenics Water Effects come in. It's almost a putty, right out of the bottle, that dries into "clear" water, while keeping it's shape. There is some shrinkage (as happens in water) so the first set of waves I sculpted didn't look like much. A second layer on top of the first bulks it up a bit.

After that, it was simply a matter of dry-brushing Polished Bone onto the waves. (I'm creating a black-ish water, so the foam should be a bit dirty looking.)

Long story short, here's a picture. The ghoul has just the basic water effect. The test piece on the right has my waves on top.

The two pieces also show you the difference between lots of bubbles and no bubbles, and the difference between a smooth-sided mold and a rougher mold.

Oh...my...god....o.o

Devo. Is it too soon to say I love you? You've singlehandedly given me inspiration for painting and modeling again, while somehow simultaneously making me beat myself for knowing that I can't do what you do. Yet.

That's simply gorgeous, and when you get it all together it's going to be magnified 100 fold. A fully ranked unit of 'From the waves!' ghouls/Any infantry is going to look fantastic. I applaud you.

This is absolutely Gorgeous. You've stumbled onto something here that's really, really unique. If my Warmachine bases could hold water (Har!) I'd think about doing this as well, but that won't pan out with the way the game runs.

I'll stop throwing praising words around. You're simply awesome. That makes me a liar since I just praised you again, you Magnificent hobbyist.

Damnit! I can't stop! I'll just sit here and pretend I could do something similar.

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

THANKS your the man i have been trying to figure this out for mounth and my friends think im crazy...well there not completely wrong!!!!!

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

Well, if you figure out how to make a movement tray that integrates these bases, let me know because I haven't gotten around to figuring that part out yet.

Even better, if you figure out how to make a display board that doesn't look too hokey, let me know!

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

with the movment tray< what if you take a wood block and make it the inside size of the tray (where the models sit) and have balsa wood as the base, then make a mold around that so you can pour the water effects around the border of the wood block, and make that the border for the tray?

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

I was thinking something similar, though quite different. I was contemplating the creation of a movement tray, then making a mold of the tray. By pouring water effects into the mold, I'd have a movement tray made of just water. Paint the rocks black, drybrush the waves, and I'd be done!

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

Just had a good read through this thread and your work is absolutely droolworthy, I realy want to see this army in the flesh but were on opposite sides of the pond so I doubt I will :(

A Tharaka said there must be a way to set and mould the movement tray, maybe make a mould 12" or so long for strips of the water effect resin then when it sets cut the strips to lengths to stick to the tray base. The bottom of the tray could also be resin with some seaweed set into it or something? you can get lots of nice dolls house sea decorations on ebay from time to time, maybe some miniature shells.

Cant wait to see what you do

RE: Devo's Painting Log -- Updated 3/21/10

Okay, it's been a while since I updated this. I was painting for a bit, before I got burned out on it. (And I have a long way to go, still!) Everything that I finished painting has the first stage of the base done, however, and that's been fun to do.

So, what have I been working on?
ghouls1.jpg

There are 28 ghouls in there. Only five or so are completely finished. Most of them have the first stage of basing done: high water. A half dozen or so are in their second stage, where I've used Water Effects to add waves. Five are completely done, with two layers of Water Effects (to add a bit of height to the waves) and then painting the waves.

Here are my five finished models:
FinishedGhouls.jpg

Here are some WIP ghouls. I need to get these painted so I can add the water. After these, I think I'm down to just a few 4x4 unit fillers. Then I'm done with ghouls and can move on to some other things.
