He looks GREAT! Much more pirate-y I think this size fits, any more and you could steer into classic-chaos-dwarfs-tier hat realm - and I don't know if that kind of comical awesomeness fits this rather serious model.

As for the name - maybe that's just me, but Rising Reaper sound vaguely sexual And while that's not a bad thing, ships are usually called a 'she' It's a process, you'll find the perfect name sooner or later

Damn it @Borgnine ! No that won't do at all! It seems that the Rising Reaper was a nickname conjured by one of Luthors more twisted personalities!

It's not realy a ship actually, more like something of a big Dory and closing in on a Cog I guess.

This is the sunken remnants of Luthors very first pirate-ship. Sunken long before some unfortunate Marauders opened his coffin. Maybe so old that Luther was proper alive at the time?
With his new powers as Mortarch of the Abyss, Luthors now has made sure it will never sink again. I can imagine him madly shouting nautical orders to the crew even thou it isn't needed!

The name had to change and as of now it's "Dead Jolly Banshee" or "Sad Hangman" but it's constantly changing!

Very, very interesting construction! I'm interested how it looks from the front and from the back - how did you give it the right shape? Also, do you plan to clad/cover the cardboard with something? I'm looking for some inspiration in shipbuilding

That's a really cool mini! I've already made a figurehead and will attach it later today but that mini seem to fitting to pass up! Any idea what I could play it as in WHF 8th?

Well @Borgnine I'll upload some more pictures from other angles as soon as I get home I'll see if I can summarize how I got the shape later today!
Actually I covered the cardboard with.. More cardboard! The planks are more worn the closer they are to the edges. Right now I'm thinking of applying a layer of wooden glue on each plank and while it dries make thin stripes so it will look more like wood but I got to check first if it's worth the trouble.

It feels like I've googled every corner of the internet for inspiration on building this. I've watched all Pirates of the Caribbean, looked in the Generals Compendium and googled for everything between and including "ghost ship" and "historic warships," read up on cogs, galleons, fluyts, spars, bulwarks, railings, decks. There's just so many things that make up a boat!
I'm doing my best for now but it's a struggle and there's no way I'm going to make it proper realistic sadly. The closest I get will be something out of a comic book maybe.
If anyone comes up with an idea for further details or has sone tips for building this kind of thing I urge you to post it. I'm just doing this thing as I'm going and would like all the input I can get! Thx beforehand!

Glad to help! Perhaps as a Wight King, or an unusual banshee? They also do a bigger version which is more like an angel with wooden wings which is worth a look. If you search under Razig on the Reaper site they do undead pirates and all sorts...

@Shadespyre I'll check it out! The thought of adding more pirates to my undead is becoming more and more appealing! A banshee seems very appropriate! Think I'll go with that!

Recently got home and just in time for the green stuff on the figurehead to have hardened! I took the head of Arkhans beast, Razarak, and modified it into what I see as a more marine theme.
The story behind this figurehead is somewhat controversial. Did Luthor use his new powers as Mortarch to summon and then fusing the so far unheard of Abyssal Terror Gyaradarc, devourer of souls of drowned, with his old ship to give it a life of its own? Or perhaps one of Luthors more jealous personalities hade the figurehead made in an effort not to let the other Mortarchs be the betters of him? Or maybe it's just a coincidence?
Either way I'm quite happy about it. My skills with green stuff are mediocre at best so I usually try to find fitting bits instead of GS. Sadly I couldn't find any for this head so it's GS all the way I'm afraid.

Do anyone recognize were I got my inspiration for the design?

Cool figurehead! I'd guess that the main inspiration was a Gyarados This ship will really be something special As for the planks - if I was doing it, I'd use balsawood with ridges along it - these work with straight planks, not bent as here, though. PVA glue could prove to be tricky. Maybe just painting the woodgrain lines along it would be the easiest way?

As for the Dark Maiden mini - at one point I also wanted her in my army and seeing how she uses a big base, I thought she could work as a spirit host Not many small ghosts, but one bigger - it still works the same

Glad you like the look so far! As for the figurehead the inspiration came from something far more made-up I'm afraid .
I actually took a break from this ship and threw together a Dwarf Ironclad for my friend and we had a very fun game using 9th age and The Generals Compendium!

Nicely done! It is indeed a Gyarados that gave me the idea!
Yeah balsa wood would probably be better as I assume one could soak it and bend it into shape. However the cardboard is much easier and made construction less of a challenge
Right now I'm figuring on how to fix mast and rigging so yeah the planks are probably done as they are. Hopefully I'll be able to enhance the look by painting as you suggest but we'll see.

So here are some more photos of the ship from other angles. I'm going to change the interior and give it more details but this gives a pretty clear picture of my goal.

So this is the soon to be crew of The Dark Maiden assembled and primed! Naturally they aren't the original crew, save for the one with a pegleg . No these are the souls of Harkons favorite crew members over the long years at sea, gathered together to serve eternally on the resurrected Dark Maiden!

The crew is also great - classic GW zombies fit them perfectly Also, I understand you two about those random nautical orders - my fiancee is playing Assassins Creed Black Flag right now and they do it unabashedly

EDIT: I forgot to add: this project of yours is very inspiring and reminds me of that Nurgle Fleet idea I had long time ago. Challenging, but interesting. The undead projects will never end though, so that will stay as an idea - but you make me kinda regret that fact

I would love seeing a Nurgle fleet! It must be done! Let go of ordinary life and construct it now! With Gutrot Spume at its lead! In fact I recently watched a battle report from Once Bitten and it included a war shrine of Nurgle in the form of a ship. Gorgeous model. If you ever consider building ships I very much recommend reading Generals Compendium a few times. Ships are quite easy to build if you make it based on a block of cut-out styrofoam.

So for anyone who see this post, need some advice!
Here's a prototype example of how I will make the sail look teared and wearied. On the left side is me using a knife and actually ripping it apart to shreds. On the right I've used a scissor to cut it into shape.
I'd prefer to use the one on the right because it is less likely to continue tearing apart and filling up the model with leftover threads for forever but I wanted to ask you all if the look is acceptable enough:

And here is a test sample of PVA glue smeared over the same thin cardboard as the ship and then I've used a nail to draw lines to resemble wood:

And here is how it looks after it dried and I splattered some Nuln Oil all over to better show the effect:

What do you guys think (got an extra eye on you @Borgnine )?
Is it worth applying the effect on all the planks? Please let me know what you think of these two steps!

For the sails i agree with you that the right side better to use but i think i would try to make it resemble a bit more to the left side. maybe thinner gaps? As for the wood effect i dig it! don't forget to apply them plank by plank as to not lose the effect of planks and it becomes one think wood block. (if that makes any sense?)

How about adding some kind of varnish to the sails? Maybe those little strands could be hold in place thanks to it. Maybe this left part could work then...

As for the wood - it looks better than I imagined Promising! I would only change the pattern that you do on it - not short wavy ones, but rather long and wavy Lines on the woodgrain tends to twist and turn but they usually don't end abruptly like this. Look up some examples on google and this could look really, really good

However I ended up with a different approach thanks to you @Shadespyre!

Don't know if the pictures show but I carved the pattern on the cardboard instead. It was much easier and I figured I could at least try. If it wouldn't work I could just cover it with glue anyway. I'm quite satisfied with the result:

She's a beauty! Have you tried painting this kind of plank on a test piece? I am curious how it'll work later. Nevertheless, so far it's terrific
