How many Necropolis Knights?

  • The masquerade of murder returns! A new game of Vampires Amongst Us has begun. Unmask the killers, trust no one, and try to survive the night. Find out more and sign up now!
That would work to, I guess I am stuck in the Tomb King mindset where nothing you stick on a horse is going to live through combat.

What units of chariots, infantry or cavalry would be worth using this on? I guess you could pop a corpse cart behind enemy lines, but I am not sure it would be worth all that much.

edit: WAIT! are blood knights cavalry? Could you summon 3 bloodknights into the rear of your opponent?

You could... if you could field them on 3's.

You must select a Unit that has not been deployed for the banner =(

EDIT: HA! I'm a Vampire Thrall now... no more dispel scroll caddy! :D

You couldn't do three blood knights because minimum unit size, but you could do some hexwraiths or cairn wraiths with a TB. Technically, it could be a necro on corpse cart, but again, probably never worth it.

Ah, didn't realize the minimum size was 4 and not 3 :( The corpse cart would be interesting, you can throw it by your opponents bunker if you do a mounted list, and not only can you decrease his casting value, you could also charge it for d6+1 impact hits onto the bunker, but I suspect that cairn or hex wraiths are probablly the best bet if you are going to entomb a unit.

Well... now we have a method for that damned Cart to keep up with the rest of the army, pop him out in the right moment and get your undead the Vigour Mortis they need! Surprise attack huh?

Honestly, I think this is the key reason we haven't seen more interesting UL lists out there. Everyone is either trying to shoehorn in their TK or VC lists into a UL format, without really taking advantage of the interesting synergies.

I actually play both armies competitively so I've put a lot of thought into how to create a combined force that's more than the sum of its halves. Unfortunately every time I get close the event I'm going to just decides to comp End Times out of existence (or bans it entirely). Woe is me.

Here's hoping they just get a damned combined book for next edition.

So... the strategy would go like this:

Have a Sepulchral herald carry the Banner of the Hidden Dead, while mounted in a skeletal steed. He would join a band of Black Knights with a Vampire Lord in them. You would have several drops to select from before a game starts: A Corpse Cart, the Necropolis Knights (who can fit somehow) or some chariots. You select the one you can use the best and relent it's deployment.

Then, as the turns advance, you commit your cavarly in a "suicidal" attempt perhaps and before calamity ensues, you reveal your hidden unit, along any other Entombed beneath the sands unit you also brought and re-arrange the odds in your favor, granting ASF to Black Knights, which is always very nice! and unexpected!

What do you think?

Not necropolis knights, A) they ca already get EBTS, and B) it is only a unit of cavalry, chariot(s), or infantry up to 175 points. By as the turns advance you mean turn 2, when you have to roll for their arrival first, so on a 3+ you have a corpse cart whether you were planning for it then or not.

So 3 Entombed sounds pretty trixy. Wisdom seems to be that big units need buffing to make them worth it, and they lose attacks when they're in two ranks anyway. May just pull the trigger on these models.

You can entomb a big unit and have it work without buffs, but if your unit is lost in the sands do you want to lose a 200 point unit or a 600 point unit? same thing for it arriving on the worst possible random board edge, do you want a 200 point unit doing nothing all game or a 600 point units. It's not that you can't go larger, it's just for the same price as a unit of 6, you can have 2 units, that can respond to your enemies actions, increasing the odds at least one of them arrives on turn 2. The only time I would ever see units of 6+ was in a TK only list with Rhamotep to give them a rerollable armor save.

Although, with lore of metal a 1+ would be pretty sweet on them.

x°x I'm an idiot that didn't read their upgrades hahaha

But the Banner of the Hidden Dead is still a nice surprise, specially if you're playing Hexwraiths along with small units of Chariots. The only thing VC can add to that is a small-ish unit of Black Knights, some Cairn Wraiths (with a Banshee might I add), or even a Vampire with some moderate upgrades! (Quickblood - lance?) even surprise Konrad!! (if we could field him in Undead Legions...)

Sun, I have played many different armies over the last 12 years and change using a variety of different styles and tactics. I don't keep myself away from new possibilities, I embrace them. I've played Legion, VC and TK extensively (about 60/300/250 games respectively) and trying out those big ol' snake surfers in an army where they can march was one of the first things I tried when Nagash started his party in the desert last year. :-)
In the most competitive environments, I cannot advocate the use of Necro Knights in UL, there are far better choices and knights don't have ethereal movement or flight (not that I think much of hexwraiths in all comers nowadays.) Their footprint causes issues. They don't vanguard or have vampiric like some of other other choices. I play with the terrain rules listed in the BRB or whatever the TO decides to place on his tables.
You also state that UL is a fast army but Najo sticks to his infantry lists

EBTS: Relying on that die roll to see if they pop, then seeing if they scatter and hopefully aren't destroyed is a risky proposition. There is no guarantee with EBTS. I would much rather have something starting on the table as opposed to waiting for it to hopefully show up when playing a tournament unless its Glade Riders.

Repeated discussion has been made about buffing Necro Knights to deal with threats and to protect them. That's fine sure, but vargs and hexies can operate on their own in a better capacity due to the fact that they can choose their combats more effectively and can evade threats much easier. Morghasts can be thrown into this as well despite point cost due to their T5 and hover.

On the subject of zombies vs archers ("Archie Bunker" as I used to call it with high elves), having more bodies will keep the unit alive vs. big spells and templates. We'll have to agree to disagree.

On me not using chariots properly;
I've been playing TK's since their 6th edition book was released, I know my way around the chariot training grounds so to speak. The thing is, I'd rather spend those points on 4 units of wolves to win the deployment war, magehunt in dart formation if need be or to stall something.

I respect other peoples' opinions and playstyles. It's good that we have differing viewpoints so please no one take offense by anything I say because as well know, you can't tell how someone feels on the net.

@Nicreap By the way, thank you for the info on the US Masters a little while ago
