Hello

I have a friend who plays HE and who's been kicking my ass almost every game since I got my own VC army. Now, I was really excited when Undead Legions became a thing as this means I have a new means of killing those damn elves before they reach CC: shooting.

When I told him about some of my new possibilities and how excited I was for this merging of the undead armies, he told me the following: "Well, I could basically mix my army with all the other armies if I wanted to, but I don't 'cause I think it's kind of stupid."

I should probably mention that back when I had just started investing in my army - and only had zombies, skeletons, a necromancer, varghulf and corpse cart - this friend of mine mixed his HE army with a cannon from the Dwarfs book with a rune that had it cause fire wounds, which basically killed everything I had and this made the game quite frustrating for me. He even topped it off by taunting me with each loss I suffered to really make sure that there was mutual understanding of his superiority.

Yes, he makes me slightly angry at times, sorry for whining.

Now, the way he completely disregarded the Undead Legions as being "stupid" and comparing it to just "mixing armies" made me a little bitter, to put it lightly, but I managed to just shrug it off.

So, to the actual question: are people really allowed to mix units from different army books as they please? This honestly completely ruins my interest for the game. I mean, how am I supposed to win against crazy magic AND shooting?

While "mixing" armies is allowed in the Undead Legions army list ad it has its own book and rules, this is not permitted for any other army. Your friend has not been playing by the rules.
All army units must come from their respective book, unless special rules allow it.

Damn. Considering he's the one who taught me the basics of the game I feel quite betrayed hearing that - yet I'm quite happy to hear that those cannon balls one-shotting my varghulf were actually illegal.

Your 'friend' sounds like an...interesting human...

Nah, Bigbadbat is right. The only time you could've done that was with dogs of war (pretty much Ogres, with bits and pieces from other armies, but definitely not dwarven cannons with runes! The idea of a dwarf lending a perfectly good cannon to a High Elf general? Preposterous...hehe), but that's no longer the case: They're cheating (or don't know, which could be the case)

Wow lol.... why have armybooks then?

Maybe i want to build a VC army with a Demon Prince and dwarf cannons and reaper boltthrowers and witchelves and Manglersquigs and frostphoenixes......

WHFB "unbound" would lead to some sickening combinations. Just ugh. This chap sounds rather pompous and unsporting.

I agree with what everyone else has said and would like to add that his High Elves will be (more than likely) able to ally with the Dark Elves and Wood Elves once the third end times book is released so he can look forward to that and hopefully stop calling the UL "stupid."

High elves allying with Dark elves?????? Never, ever, ever, will those two ally ever again. Deep worshipping of Khaine one Darkelf side and the ultimate betrayal and constant warfare ever since the split will never see these two mortal enemies reunite.

Dark elves have a hatred towards anything other than themselves (and they even kill and offer themselves) and they despise every other race. They dont ally, they roll solo.

With Woodelves its another story altogether, although woodelves care only for their forests and are not particularly friendly

Okey dokey.

Endtimes novel SPOILER ALERT

Teclis allowed his niece (Tyrion's daughter by the Everqueen) to be sacrificed in order to allow Nagash's return. Teclis believes Naggie is the the only one who can defeat the Chaos powers. He (speculation here) also allowed it to happen in order to push his brother over the edge and...draw the Sword of Khaine, Widowmaker. Tyrion has yet to do so but many think it will occur.
Doesn't sound like Teclis does it? Turns out he's a conniving schmuck who is telepathically getting advice from a powerful wizard who refers to him as "Nephew." Can you say, Malekith? Dun dun DUHN!!!
An argument can be made that its actually Caledor Dragontamer who has been stuck in the portal holding back the DoC in Ulthuan for centuries but let's face it, its the end times. We are going to see enemies ally in order to "save" what they think needs saving.
It's already been said by many that the next book to be released will have rules for a united chaos army. The one after that will contain the three elven nations and the final installment will have lizzies and skaven.
Arkhan and Manny allied together to bring back the giant skeleton with a robe so why wouldn't other races put aside their differences in order to stay alive?

EDIT: The wood elf queen is dying. The world tree of athel loren was opened and revealed to be full of maggots. Some of the asrai sent word to Ulthuan begging the Everqueen to heal Alarielle so that's how that alliance will happen.
