Selling through a webshop (like all retailers) and then sending it by mail (like all retailers) but asking a higher price than the retailers (like GW) amounts to less people buying form GW directly.
Plus on top of that, who needs retailers if its by postal delivery order through a webshop that is worldwide.

Basically GW could sell their product to all of us for the price they sell it to retailers. Which is the fair price, where they still make a generous profit.
THAT would amount in an increase of sales and would stimulate your fanbase to buy several armies, since prices are reasonable. That is how you can make more money and be a thorn in the eye of the competition.

Your network-ideas are nice and all but the network isnt created by letting retailers sell your products online for discount.

No internet retailer i know has a place where customers can play, most of them are based in some remote industrial terrain where they have storage and thats it. So theres no networking there.

All i see is something that costs 40€ (with profit) but gets sold 85 because of all the middlemen and their own greed. The two latter can simply be eliminated and then some people might buy 2x Nagash. Why? because he is freaking epic and you want to paint him twice differently.... And youre still 5€ cheaper
Its the exact same reason that Finecast failed... Not because of bad quality, that was a startup problem. It was great later on. Simply because youre creating things that are too pricey and therefore completely unattractive. Everyone was making conversions and buying Highelves on horses to portray bloodknights....

This is a massproduct where rule is: the more you sell, the more you make profit. Another rule of massproduct is low prices with less margins, to be attractive and be able to sell huge volumes. (especially true if you dont have a fancypansy-status like Apple)
I got the Nagash model/books combo and a set of cards for $160 US, which is about $50 cheaper than just about everyone else and I still think it's overpriced. Maybe GW really stands for Greedy Weasels...

They wouldn't make a generous profit at all. And GW wouldn't actually be allowed to do that since they are subject to UK trade laws, specifically competition law which prohibits trading practices that result in market domination. Something which that would lead to.

Other things they're unable to do due to UK competition law are:
- undercut competitors
- as the manufacturer they cannot refuse to deal with other retailers
- price gouge

That last one is relevant here. GW cannot, by UK law, overprice Nagash.

By UK law who determines what is a fair price, and is this applicable to commonwealth nations?

The main regulating body is The Office of Fair Trading (OFT), though there are others such the Competition Commision. The Commonwealth are independent countries, so not directly, though they would be subject to competition law of those countries (which should be heavily influenced by, if not the same as, UK's).

As the UK is part of the EU, GW are also subject to EU competition law when dealing outside the UK, but UK competition law is in line with that anyway.

With such a body, is it possible that this has simply fallen under the radar?

It's possible, but not likely. OFT's main goal is to ensure fair markets for the consumer. And if there's one thing the English like to do, it's complain (usually in the form of a strongly worded letter), so they would be informed pretty quickly.

Actually, it seems both OFT and Competition Commission were combined to form a single regulating body: the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which has been operating since April this year, with the intention of increasing competition, so it seems even less likely.

If I was pricing GW stuff at gut instinct on how much it should be...

Just as a selection of item types:

Regiment of 16-20 core troops ~£12-15
5 Cavalry ~£12
Chariot ~£12
War machines ~£12-18

Nagash? £35

I remember when the Land Raider first came out and was £35 (next most expensive being a Predator at £22) and thought WHOA PRICEY MUCH? But maybe my head's just stuck back in 2003 or something...

Writing campaign time?

You may want to adjust for inflation, Banat.

That would put Nagash at £48.29

Regiment 16-20 troops: ~£20-25 If GW still did troops in those numbers and not HALVED the box size then this would be spot on.
5 Cav: ~£15-17
Chariot: ~£15-17
Warmachine: ~£15-25

That is how the wood elves were priced.

Ironically, I remember an article that talked about hobbies and pricing and our hobby specifically. Members of the hobby are nostalegic from their youth and remember pricing from decades before and as inflation goes up and cost structure change, so do our toys. So it feels like a bigger price hike than it is, but it's actually within a 3-5% margin of error on most things. So the prices are actually roughly where they should be. Wish I could remember where I saw that, it laid out GW models directly alongside other hobby items and they were roughly the same increases.

The new wood elves? I thought they were boxes of ten? When i said regiment I meant a box of 20.

There is no law that tells you that you cannot sell a product for cheaper.
Thats why everything comes from china, its the nature of free-trade and competition. If someone can sell cheaper and still make a living than thats his full right to do so and a bummer for competitors.

There sure as hell is no law that says: A model like Nagash must be priced around 70-85€ based on what the model looks like, how big he is and the fact that other companies have similar prices.
There is just no such thing

Furthermore, if GW sells to retailers for less than half the price, they still make a good profit on it. Otherwise there would be no point in doing it.
Quick math: 9€ costs --> sell it for 22€ to retailers --> retailer sells it for 35€ --> to be out of retailers way i ask 45€

The first sell to retailers is 2.5times production costs, which is just a little underaverage of the 3x productionprice. But its still getting profit and is by far the largest selling-platform due to lower prices. You then narrow down the stock a retailer can have and their acces to models by strangulationcontracts so that a lot of people are still forced to buy at GW, since 70% of the models are not/never available at a retailer.

But in truth, if GW simply cut off the retailing business which is not needed at all since youre a worldwide-shipping online webshop, you can simply ask 3x productionprice which would be 28€

There is no law that prohibits this and this is what would be a fair and reasonable pricing. Also this would make all your fans and future-fans very happy. Most likely boosting sales and not losing revenue. In the long run this would most likely increase revenue.

Its even very likely that retailers have to pay more, and that their margins are very small. Its really a very uninteresting business to be retailing Warhammer. Every single retailer i met has said the same. Even know stores that sell warhammer "just as a hobby, not because it makes any money"

I respect you guys opinion and way to spend your money, but thinking that is ok buying nagash for that price when retailers sells it for 25% making a profit in the EXACTLY same way the gw sells it,it shocks me.
Just give me one good reason to buy from their website. Same product, same quality, same shipping (or none). Why you are willing to pay more?
You just making their game and pushing them to make for the WHFB exactly what they made of the fantasy. Big expensive toys for big wallet.
I don´t know when this hobby got lost ,but me,i do go out and pick up the damn birch seed myself and make the grass from hemp rope for the same reason i don´t buy a 2 pound zombie or 120 death kernel.
Is an hobby, not a collection, there is a big difference my friends

Retailers buy from gw at half rrp prize.
They are not allowed to have set discounts such as 10-20% off rrp, if they do, GW cuts them off.

Also they need to pay for what they stock, and if they make a 'bad call' on a race/box etc they are stuck with those 'unsellable' items meaning a loss

What do you mean theyre not allowed to 10-20% discount?
Every independant retailer sells it for 10-20% discount compared to GW....

Also, there is not a single retailer in holland that stocks.
Every single retailer has 0, 0, 0, 0, 0. Maybe 1 skeletons box, 1 zombiebox etc. But for 95% they simply order from GW when an order comes in online from a customer.
Theres a few real shops that have a very small selection of GW products but you cant call that stocking.
Retailers are only allowed to stock the models that GW has in stock in their own stores. But why stock, when it takes a week for an order to get to the customer. Saves tons of room, which can be used for other things that make money.

sell to me a retailer price and i buy all the shit u come up every 3 months.
But i did my sacrifice for the GW demigod when half the Dark elves army was metal. Result? me and 80% of my meta didn´t playd anymore.
I´m happy to advertise all the chinese recaster, copier and so because after what,15 years of piracy? You start to see the good results: all the band and commedians that sells stuff on their own site for what 5-10$?
This is a how u fuck a rotten system,u use the same merciless and "free trade" rules they set for make big fat profit in their self.
Remember Nokia before the Iphone? I wish with all my heart the same happen to GW.
They are out of control and they don´t give a fuck about anything anymore than makes some extra buck.
Think, they screw you with the smile with the 7th ed of the 40k after what? 2 years? and tells you: look we made you this big change just for you! now you can bring ONLY the rules book around when you play: 85$ thank you very much.
I studied advertising and i can tell you GW is the BEST.
They piss on ya and tell ya it´s just rain.

And this is the result of what i said before.
When i started with warhammer, almost 20 years ago or so the stores that sold GW products had ALOT to offer on the shelves. blisters and boxes alike. I used to spend hours looking through it all. Searching for bits or just a cool fig.
Sure, interwebs changed this but i still supported my flgs's.
I also got something like 20% off from the prize if i bought quantities, but it wasnt spoken of.
Then they shut down, one after the other....To sell something they had to have it in store, else most ppl just order direct from the net instead, saving the trip to the store, twice.
Not everyone lives in a big city with one or more gw retailers...
Myself now have an hour 15 minutes to closest retailer, and if i go, i must call first to see if they stock what i need, all due to gw policys.

Other specialiced stores that sell mostly or exclusively from a certain company may often have stock for free, or have possibility to return 'unsellable' stuff....

Anywho, pricing wont change due to bitchings on a forum. If you cant or wont spend the money, dont.
Buy used stuff or quit the hobby, whatever you want

I dont drive racecars, cuz i cant afford it.
I dont pour hate over the racing industry because of that

If you raced with car for 20 years and now you can´t cause they decided that you ain´t enough rich for drive THE SAME car you drived 20 years ago, wouldn´t you be pissed?
Or you just accept whatever they tell you is right cause they know better?

Racecars are generally not overpriced. GW miniatures are.

No bitching on a forum is not gonna change the price. but isnt the forum the area you can share your views, feelings and ideas about things and explain those with your arguments?
So dont blame people that are 'bitching' about something on a forum. thays what its for.

And quitting the hobby and not buying stuff from GW is exactly whats happening. Or you buy from ebay and chinese recasters to save money.
All in all, its money GW will never see anyway.
Just like downloading movies by the thousands. As if you would ever buy them all.... no, so its not stealing since you wouldnt have spent it on it in the first place. yet you still buy their paints and tools and books.

Maybe GW should just create designs and give the casting away to people that would do it for normal prices. in china. where everything is cheaper. where everything is produced anyway.

(trolling included)

This discussion is leading nowhere,as any politic, economic or religious discussion made on the net. We feel all cooler and more certain of ourselves behind a monitor.
I just wanna make a point, This is supposed to be a tabletop game you play with other human beings, for real, meeting ,talking having fun, rage, win lose and all the good and bad thing of a tabletop game.
GW is turning this beatifull hobby into a collectionism race to the coolest, newer, bigger nect thing, and you all that think is ok you´ll find yourself soon enough with bigger, cooler, pricier toys to play ALONE.
Good luck and have fun.

This is an understandable opinion, but GW has been moving to be the porsche of wargaming since kirby came in.

The way gw started out, ( and the way we all would have loved them to stay) bunch of friends creating games and having a laugh. It worked a while, but then entered a nonprofital downwards spiral. Stock introduced, new management means a demand for better profit and the hobbists are the one paying. I solemnly believe there are still ppl at gw that care about the hobby and gamers. Maybe that is the reason ward left, cause he cared, who knows....
Fact is, no longer does the board if gw consist of gamers, but of buisness men in suits. That is the price we gamers pay for how economics works today.

I agree nagash is TOO expensive. But ill prolly buy him anyway.
Fact is, if i start a new army of undead. With him in it, it'll prolly be my cheapest army yet points/$ on 2k host....
