RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Looking forward to it, Raizi! From the few times I actually brought myself to load the attachments, I was fairly impressed with your work! Bring it on!!!

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Thanks Brahm, I've also fixed most of the previous photos too, if you want to scroll through them. More to come after some school assignments have been taken care of.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Finished my Necromancer today. Took a few photos, from front and back. There's some loose snow on the model, but those bits will come off after a little dusting xD

Really pleased how this turned out, I didn't like the original staff too much so took a few bits off and made tendrils from green stuff. Also the original sword was quite 'meh' so one of my Grail Knights's horse was more than happy to give him the chalice that it had on it's head.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

What could that crimson liquid in the chalice ~possibly~ be?

Looks good my friend. I agree that you've made this model 100% better; the original sculpt is so meh that I would never even consider putting it into my army, but you've done wonders!

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

That's a great start you have there

You're right about GW's spirit hosts, yours look far more deadly and I'm liking the other conversion work you've shown us so far. You're 100% right with the Necromancer, I'd be pleased with that result as well, the sparse use of red really helps it stand out and the face look great too xD

What's next on the agenda?

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

@ Brahm, the liquid in the chalice is of course mulled wine, because it's warmth helps the necromancer keep his voice in the cold north and his incantations loud. ;)

@ Warspawned, thanks for the kind words. I have many WIP projects as it is, I like to paint a bit here and some there so it won't get too dull. I'm also trying to stretch my forces as much as possible with the models I have so some unit fillers are in the works.

I will next post a set with my first 5 finished Dire Wolves. I have 5 more, but I was about to order from GW the The Thing in the Woods and use it as the Doom Wolf so it would actually stand on some large rock, leading the pack and basing it on a 50x100 base so it would fill 4 spaces. Then I would make 4 of the remaining wolves in 50x50 bases so I'd end up with a 18 strong Dire Wolf unit that could be wielded in 3 ranks using only 11 models.

I am actually quite thrilled with this project, let's see how it turns out. I'll post the pics for the first 5 finished Dire Wolves soon.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Ok, here's the wolves. Nothing too spectacular, I have the old Dire Wolf models. Not too fond of the rotten whatevers that they sell nowadays anyway. As I said, I have 5 more waiting to be based and painted and The Thing in the Woods will come to lead them. It will take some time until I've assembled them, though. Meanwhile I'll be doing something else. Next I think I will make some slight modifications to my Cairn Wraiths and Banshee, take some new pics and post them.

I used toothpicks and green stuff to make the spikes out for the wolf in the center. I've used that as my Doom Wolf just to make some distinction between the rank-and-file wolves.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

So I've managed to go through my Wraith unit one more time. You can find the original photo of them from the start of this thread behind a link to flickr. I was not satisfied with them as they were and decided to add a little something.

As the Wraiths are one of my favourite units, I am really concerned on how they look. I decided to play around with bits of green stuff and made some eldrich flames around the scythes and on the banshee's hair. I think it ties up the unit nicely, giving them a more uniform look.

And on a side note, I have completely fallen in love with the Leviathan Purple wash. I've also now settled how I will base my army: lots and lots of snow, ice and some odd hints to a frozen battleground.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Love the wraith with the hourglass, he looks great. How did you make the flames coming off them? Also I agree about the wolves...I am so very tempted to get my hands on the new spacewolves wolves, they are the best looking ones Ive seen in a long time.

Thanks! I went to the GW site just a few minutes ago to look for the Fenris Wolves myself. I really liked their color scheme, let's see if I'll redo my wolves when I get The Thing from the Woods and have the whole block assembled. White wolves would be more wintery, I think.

About the flames: I simply took a small bit of green stuff and pressed it really thin between my fingers. Then I attached one end of it to the scythe with a toothpick and let it stay there for about half a minute.

When it starts to get a bit less moldable, I take the toothpick to the flat green stuff piece again and take the GS between my thumb and the toothpick. Then I just draw away from the scythe and let it rip from here and there. Some of the GS will come off, but the spots where it tears are actually the tips of the flames. The I reattach the base of the 'flame' if it has come off.

The hourglass Wraith got that leaping flame by half accident when it came off as I was pulling the GS, but I really like how it turned out in the end.

I Hope that my explanation makes sense. xD

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Winter is coming.

Again, one of my favorite characters. Krell. I've had the old model since 4th edition, when I started playing Warhammer. I've never used him as himself though, always as a Wight King. Let's see if that will change with the current edition.

As always with the old models, they are pretty badly posed. I have had trouble of fitting him in any regiments, because of his axe and there was also two other features is did not like at all. The banner on his back and the spike on top of his helmet. Luckily there's nothing a knife and some green stuff can't change.

I also based him on top of a frozen pile of skulls for two reasons:
1) Now he can be put inside a unit, without constantly harassing the guy next to him with his axe.
2) The fluff for my Grave Guard unit is that they collect heads as trophies and some of my unit fillers for them are just piles of skulls. (Krell also was the Champion of Khorne while alive, so it's fitting that he retains his old hobby of collecting skulls in afterlife.)

His left hand was begging for the loose heads from the zombie kit to be attached to it. Again it looked pretty stupid on its own. The cloak is from the vampire that comes with the Abyssal Terror kit.

I'm really happy about the axe. I've painted it a dozen times and never achieving the 'Black Axe' -look. Now it's all wintery and nice. I also chose to give his bones/flesh a distinct blue tint to separate him from the unit he is with.

Okay, after the tl;dr, here's the pics:

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Zombies, first 5 finished. Still have many, many more to go. Played around a bit with the fleshtone as I wasn't really sure which way to go. Don't know if the next 5 will have different colours for their overalls or would it be funny if they'd all be uniform.

Redarmy, the cork might be a fun idea to try, but I've got no idea on how to get hold any of it. Perhaps I could use that as a pretext to invest heavily on wines? I wonder if my wife would approve on that, though...

About the Garden of Morr, I find the scenery great but I am in no mind to buy myself one just yet. All my models and stuff are in so much disarray that I dare not buy anything new just yet. Perhaps later I will update some pics of my working station so you'll see what I mean. o_o

I have used some cork board you can get easy enough. The type you would use for pinning up things on a wall instead of wine corks. It breaks off in thin easily shaped pieces that look great as rocks like this:

The rock facing he is standing on is what it is. Cheap and works great.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

@ Shadow, oh thanks, I think I might check the local hobby crafts store if they have any available. I think I've seen some balsa-wood there, so they might have cork too.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Easter is coming and I've secured some cork for myself. Finally found some blocks of the stuff that were really cheap.

I also bought the High Elf Lord on a Dragon box from a friend of mine. He had it still in a mint, unopened box. I'm trying to convert it to the dark side and will be working with that this week. I just broke the first rule that I had about not buying any new mini's,but he let go of the dragon really cheap. I had to do it. xD

Pictures incoming, as soon as I get anything together. I'm still wondering what I will do with the kit. I also have some nearly finished zombies, that just need their bases finished.

Happy Easter everyone!

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Finished the rider. I'll post WIP progress of the dragon through Easter. The halberd and the model need some cleaning up before I start to paint, but overall I'm happy.

Here's some pics:

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Began working with the dragon. That thing is frigging HUGE. From pictures, I always thought it to be a lot smaller. I measured the model about 22cm long and the wingspan of the beast is 27,5cm!

WOW!

I am amazed. Now just how to convert it to the realm of the unliving? I have a few ideas, but I'd like to ask: Does anyone know any tips on how to create maggots? Like hideous, putrid masses of them that come out from open wounds...

I've got the color theme pretty much figured out, what I will use with the dragon. The rider is still a bit of a mystery. I think I'll finish the dragon first and then paint the rider.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

I thought I was set with the color scheme, but I ended up changing it along the way anyway. Now I'm having a bit of a trouble deciding how to paint the armor plates and the scales.

I was thinking red armor plates for the dragon, but now I'm more inclined to paint them black or rusty/coppery metal. I also thought about the scales, should I darken them more, or make them stand out a bit with drybrushing them with a lighter shade of blue.

Argh! Please, C&C on this! Pictures of the WIP below.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Nice work on the zombies. Too nice in fact, you'll go insane if you paint 40 of them with that much detail.
Varghulf is nice too, I'd add some more blood to him personally, splattered here and there.
The underbelly on that dragon is coming along very nicely.

Thanks! I do them on my own snail-pace in groups of 5, but my idea was to only have the most detail on the front 10 and then only the essentials on zombies after that. Luckily I only own 20 of them ATM, but with the unit filler I use, I am able to wield them in a unit of 30. Now that I'm stuck with the dragon and my head doesn't get any good ideas, I'm continuing the work on the next 5 Zombies, that include the command group and with the unit filler.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Easter came and went. Got to visit too many relatives and eat too much food. Was fun though, but it didn't leave that much time for painting.

I ended up doing the armor plates red and painting the scales black, with a blue tint. I'll put some pictures of the progress after I've put my painting station in working order again. (Had to pack up everything for a while during Easter to clean up the desk)

Also played a game against Lizardmen on Saturday. 1500 points and used the Dragon as a Terrorgheist. First game with a TG and really liked it. Especially good against Lizardmen. We ended up with "Blood and Glory" scenario and I defeated his Slann on turn 5, which ended the game in my victory as he had no flags or general remaining.

RE: Raizi's Frozen Host

Here's the progress so far. I didn't like the High Elf reins too much, so I put some bits from a Tomb Kings Chariot kit there instead. I also filed off any High Elf insignias from the gauntlets and legguards. I think I will add some skulls there or paint them freehand.

I might darken the scales even more and tweak the red plates a bit too. The spikey ridge and the horns still lack washes and detail and the wings have just the underpaint. I do them separately.
