This means that this painting thread will go into hibernation until I regain my bloodthirsty desires.

Raizi, you're army is stupendous so far! As far as my favorites go, I love the flames on your wraiths and the dragon has SO MUCH BLENDED DETAIL! It's insane. I see you have lost some inspiration, which is too bad, because your theme has possibly helped inspire my ideas a bit further. I'll have to subscribe just in case you post anything soon.

Maybe some more of those awesome greenstuffed tendrils you made will find their way in to more of your works? http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/doom/release/02634 could make a unit filler to tie back those nether tentacles idea (which I thought was awesome!)

Aaahhhh. Back again. Nagash summoned me here and I woke up. Been working on something the past last week again, mainly dusting off my equipment and checking out what I need to replace. Also managed to slap some paint onto couple of minis. Crossworking with VC and Skaven now.

I will continue updating this thread again when I take some photos. Good to be back and it feels great to be painting and modeling again. I try to give my models the best treatment everytime I work with them and for that reason the hiatus was necessary. This is only a hobby after all and it's best when you can gain positive energy from the stuff you do. I will rummage through the forums to see all the new blood and to check on what else is happening.

So here's where my Grave Guard are at the moment. 10 strong and more in the works. I finally managed to paint the weapons in a way that I could be satisfied with. Took sweet time too but layering it down and just lots of water was the path to victory here. There isn't anything too fancy on the bases, just snow. I plan on adding more stuff on the unit fillers that I'm working on.

I thought that I'd also share some insight on how I photo my minis. Currently I set up shop on my kitchen table, I have a piece of cardboard that I took from some toy-kit I bought for my kids and that works as the background. For lighting I use a white-light lamp that I dampen with a tissue. I haven't managed to build a proper light-box, but this seems to work okay for me.

Lighting is the most important thing when taking photos, the light shouldn't be too hard or the colors will burn and the shading will not stand out. You should always use a camera that can adjust white balance right, so your white doesn't end up yellow in the photos.

I'm no way an expert in this and please C&C to pass on tips on how to improve. I'm a kind of gypsie in my home with my hobby stuff, as I constantly have to move them around to make room for kids so I don't have any fancy hobby area where I build my stuff. I just set up my stuff on our kitchen table, and then pack them away when I'm done.

Some ghouls. I have 5 more that just need their bases to be finished. I decided to put these fellas on a bit more rocky surface. The stones are actually just small bits of clay, so nothing too fancy on that department. I want every unit to have something that ties them together and for he ghouls I decided to do red loincloths.

I also wanted to paint their skin in a slightly different tone than my zombies, but still retaining the cold flesh look.

Finished Grave Guard unit filler. Still need to practice a lot doing light sources and flames and stuff, but here's where I'm now, so to speak. I will make one more of these later on (which might be a lot later) for my Grave Guard. I think I've been through the bits already on an earlier post, but I'll tell it again: the pillar of skulls is a bit from the TK Screaming Skull catapult and the skull on the top is a Hexwraith's head.

Some head details after today's progress. This bugger certainly has some detail and to be frank, it's quite intimidating to try and figure out the color scheme as you have to paint most of the stuff in sprues before assembly.

Decided to reinforce the joints of the spirits with some wiring. I hope my green stuff is still good to cover those gaps.

I really don't want to see this falling apart the first time I deploy it on the tabletop. Has anyone else had any experience in assembling Nagash? The joints slide together smoothly and the model seems to be very light overall despite it's size, but I still wonder if gluing the joints together will be sturdy enough. (Hence the wireworks)

Then how to find out where the wire meets the other piece in the joint? I first drilled a hole in the first part for the wire, then I put some paint around it and pushed it against the second part of the joint to find out where the holes would match.

I hope this method saves me from the horror or multi-millimeter gaps between the pieces.

Another plog coming back to life after a long break, nice!

I looked through your collection, nice theme you have there! And the wings of your dragon, so painterly I think I'll steal the idea about giving additional tentacles to the Necromancer's staff, it really improves the model. As do the flanged dagger for the Necrarch.

Nagash is a nice piece to come back into the hobby He is really coming up nicely, but I don't think those pins are really necessary. The connection area on those ghosts is quite large, spirits itself light, them breaking isn't a problem, them being wobbly is the problem and pinning won't stop that... On this topic I really liked GW's video on Youtube 'How to paint Nagash' when they subtly glue some of the spirits to the robe, making them nice and stable. Still, do as you please Snowy Nagash should be cool!

I think I will pin just the bottom connections of the spirits together. I am also at a loss on how to link Nagash to a snow theme and how to base him, but I'll just make stuff up as I go.

This model is just huge. I will also need to come up a safe place to store it.

Well, one idea would be to shave some plastic off the spirit-arms to make them more 'edged', add some icicles and paint is as ice emerging from the snow around him. Would be awesome - lots of work though

@Borgnine, there will be ice for sure. Perhaps some ghostfire flames too and who knows what else. I have a few ideas and I just want the base to possess every bit of oomph that the model has.

Meanwhile, I just love painting the ghosts and bottom coat. I can actually switch to using a bigger brush that holds water better and just... PAINT. I think there will be about a million layers and a lakeful of water used to paint this piece. I think this is by far the most I have enjoyed to paint any mini. Too bad that the family keeps harassing me with household chores all the time. Kids better learn to feed themselves soon...

Updates from the Experimental Laboratories. I have a 9th age game coming up later this week and I want to finish some of my units before that so I played around with the idea tha my spirit hosts would be based on frozen water. Since the new models sprout out from corpses, I just got the idea that they are men who drowned themselves. (Suicide: the classic clause for being a ghost)

So, to come out with a frozen water base I played around with some blue hued crackle-paint (that cracks when it dries up) and wanted to try out which sort of basecoat works the best.

On the first picture, I divided a 50x50mm base in 4 quarters that I painted differently and left one quarter unpainted. Next picture is after the crackle paint was left to dry overnight.



I learned three things:
1st: basecoat of electric blue works best.
2nd: The crackle paint fails to attach to the base without any basecoat
3rd: The loose crackle paint looks interesting enough so I will put all of it in a small bag and make a few more patches of this stuff so I can add some variety to the bases in form of ice sheets.

Edit: Quickly ran a couple of layers of paint on the "ice". I'm really liking how this turned out. Now off to buy more of that crackle-paint stuff. I have 3 spirit hosts to finish and base.

Meanwhile I wait to get more of that crackle paint from overseas (The product had been discontinued, it was really difficult to track a store that had it) I assembled my 40 skellies and basecoated most of them.

Impaled Cohort has lots of bits from here and there, some Tomb King charioteers and cavalry, lances from the Knights of the Empire sprues and overall just a creative use of bodies to strech the unit to 40 with some unit fillers.

Then I found two untouched sprues of skellies more so I will make that unit of 50 before I start to paint them. Played two small games of 9th age past weekend and it was a blast. I can wholeheartily recommend that to anyone and I also managed to entice a new player to the hobby. I borrowed him my Skaven for two games and now he is up to start collectin WoC from scratch.

That sort of thing doesn't happen too often nowadays, but with Total War out, people seem more interested in this again.

Well, some pics of the unit. First some of the unit fillers, then a closeup on the standard bearer and rest of the unit. I made the banner from tinfoil and pva glue and it turned out rather okay. I plan to paint the banner freehand with some impaled corpses and I will do some scething on the design first.

Nice blending on Nagash's robe. And you use that crackle paint very nicely, I never thought about painting it afterwards - for how simple that is, I should be ashamed...

And the skeletons are also very nice, cool idea with that giant spear And the standard bearer is interesting, it's an old GW model or something else?

@Borgnine thanks. The standard bearer is indeed an old Citadel model, released with the skeleton command group in 1993. The guy is actually one of my first purchased minis when I started collecting Warhammer at the end of the last millenium, somewhere between -97 and -98.
