RE: Ravensteins WIP stuff

I don't like GW zombie hyena dogs so I went for traditional Dracula theme red-eyed timber wolves. Also helped to paint these watching movie 'The Grey' (great movie) and howling at the full moon when taking paint breaks etc. I know its different wolf species in Europe and Alaska now too hehe

I still need to make 2 doom wolf to go in each pack to make 6 in pack. I may use werewolves for this perhaps?

not to mention, that the packleader in 'the grey' was a dog ;)
fenrisians truly is our best option for dire wolves, I'll be using them too, as soon as my thunderwolves(vargheists) are finished.
thunderwilves would make great doomwolves for you.
what werewolf minis are you considering?

I probably kitbash some werewolf creatures and do some sculpy work. I try and use GW parts so its legal for shops and such.

RE: Ravensteins WIP stuff

Thank you Bullhax. I Also ordered the dead ivy leafs for finishing basing and parts today to create some kind of female flying vampires as fell bats perhaps. I chose the batwings from scourge set..

and a small selection of wavy hair daemonette heads as an option maybe..

Those Banshee's kick ass!

Thanks. They are the simplest to do.

1.Undercoat model white.
2.Water down some Waywatcher green glaze. About 3-1 ratio water to glaze.
3 Apply in several thin coats trying to be as smooth as possible. 3 layers should do tricks. At this stage keep gravity in mind when glaze is drying, try not to allow heavy pooling of coloured glaze.
4. Hit the recesses carefully with more than the surface areas.
5. Spray very gently a thin white on top from above (can use airbrush or undercoat white spray from distance.

Job done. Takes 30 minutes to do all 3. Bases take longer than models lol

On mine I also allow some white and glaze to be on the base to give some kind of ectoplasmic glows.

RE: Ravensteins WIP stuff

Love the banshee's and the wight is just wow, so very impressive.

I was hoping to get you to share your banshee paint scheme here in this thread link below. We collect them so to have a database of how to for newer artists. Banshee how to thread please add yours

If would not mind adding it that is.

I added it as requested. Helping other people or to inspire is main reason to post I think, I never mind to share this technique with other people if they want the same look for miniatures.

Me too I love helping others Me and the wife even run small painting classes at the local store from time to time.

I have been asked to run a painting class as 'special guest' (lol) at a GW store this weekend in Torquay, UK. If anyone here wants to meet greet and swap tips and techniques for miniature painting and basing it will be fun day I hope. I am nervous about it hehe

RE: Ravensteins WIP stuff

Thanks for sharing Ravenstein, I've added it to my "painting tips" word doc. I can think of a couple places to use this technique, thanks for sharing the recipe, very much appreciated. GL with the painting class, I’m sure it'll be a blast.

RE: Ravensteins Workshop

Hi. Today I have my Cairn Wraith to share with you.
This is display piece I did for this years christmas GW competition in my area.
I was lucky to win first place for the theme 'Winter'.
Anything was allowed as entries but it must include snow or winter themes.

I decided on simple, straightforward approach, no nonsense just paint it.

I love the new wraith kit (the beautiful flowing nature of the sculpture)
and wanted to create a realistic worn leathery look to the robes and hood,
of course adding lots of snowy icy terrain to the base itself.
I made the frozen pool with actual glass, it has a nice depth
you cannot really see in the photography ( I am bad at camerawork hehe).

Well, I hope you like him.

The dying of the years end..

It's one of my favourite undead sculpts of all time.

A reaping we shall go..

DSCF2225.webp

I found eroded glass on the beach. It became an icy pool..

DSCF2219.webp

Lots of careful glazes to get smooth leather and worn effects.

Back to improving photography, more to come soon!

Very saucy! The idea to use the glass is a new one to me, thanks for that.

It's a simple trick and cheap to do. Just remember to paint the underside of the glass the colour you want the sediment to be before you glue it in place to build around. The piece I found has some fractures through it that really do like thick ice when peering into the pool :)

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Wraith added

Wow, yet another awesome paintjob and incredible basing too! Keep it up! Can't wait to see more! :)

I too will keep the glass idea in mind when I'm doing my next snow themed model!

What colours do you use for this type of glazing and how much water/medium do you add? 3:1 (water/colour) as with the ethereals?

This is a slow and steady process, the base paint was old citadel colour Graveyard earth (same pot i had since about 1996 lol) Airbrushed on for even thin coat. Shading colour is watered down to almost tinted water until the opacity looks correct to your own eye for what you want to work on, any inks used are usually also watered down. For this I used mixes of sepia/umbers/siennas in different ratios in different areas of the leather. Any corrections to the fades and shading can be done by simply returning some original base colour to the glazing colours.

For this kind of work, you just keep adding thin layer upon thin layer, using the brush tip to apply gently, always pulling the brush towards the recesses where shadow would form when touching the brush tip to the model (no 'washing' all over the model and hoping it looks good hehe). Allow each layer you applied sparingly to dry fully before applying another layer. You are basically staining the miniature in this process, one layer at a time and not painting as you would think of usually the GW way..(blob of paint on brush from pot painting etc)

Just remember that Less is More in many, many thinned layers. Models stay cleaner looking and details are defined more.

Great advice, thanks a lot! BTW, your painting is very inspirational. I am totally cheating with my etherials, giving themm the old white/greenish look.

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Wraith added

thanks a lot for the great advice! I thought that was what you did! It looks too awesome not to delve into some more!

The ethereal paint guide will be used in my next project for sure :) And the staining method might be the way to go for me as I really really dig the way it turns out.!

Thanks for the guides!

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Wraith added

Holy Hell. That's all I can muster right now. That Wraith, man. And those Banshees. And that Wight King.

Effing /killer/.

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Wraith added

Greetings fellow Lords and Ladys of the dark arts!
Here's some latest kitbashs and painting attempts, and I shall reveal a little of what else has been happening at Ravenstein Castle through these cold winter nights..

Firstly, I am no admirer of the fell bat miniatures from GW.
I can see that they have a certain charm, but they were unsuitable for the vision I have for my army.
So, I set about the kitbash, hunting for body parts to 'stitch' together and create new monstrosities, suitably fit for the ghastly Ravenstein bloodline.
These photos are a little shiny - I will attempt some better schnapps at a later date.

DSCF2379.webp

I made them from GW Daemonette heads, Ghoul bodies, Dark Eldar scourge wings and the cool little morbid gravestones are from Renedra plastics.

They make an alternative unit and I look forward to trying them out in battle.

Here is a WIP of an extra Vampire hero/lord for my army..the lady of the night..Countess Theresa Von Ravenstein.

DSCF2419.webp

Fixing her atop a way marker, she is a simple conversion, again using Dark Eldar Scourge wings.
Still a long way to go but she will hopefully make a nice eye-catching hero.

Adding some more units to my Vampire Counts army has been a priority of late, mainly because at the beginning of April, my local GW store is running a new WHFB campaign.
Eager to get some of my undead horde blooded and hone tactics.

More creepy stuff to follow soon!
