RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Wraith added

Wow, all your painting is just gorgeous! I can't even begin to pick out specifics to comment on because it's all so beautiful.

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Wraith added

Most excellent; The Scourge wings look absolutely fantastic, quite a bit a head of the usual Ghoul+Gargoyle (Tyranids), since they look much more leathery than bug-like. The Daemonette heads also go quite a bit towards awesome. It's only unfortunate that the ghoul bodies have that hunch, seems unfitting of a vampire, even feral; Although I guess they could be more like, vampire-spawn rather.

The dogs also look exceptional. It's a shame how GW made the rules work with Invocation raising them, and them being undead and everything, rules wise anyways; I'm sure no sane player would argue with good looking minis :pumpkin:

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Wraith added

Oh my. The lady of the night is just perfect. This is what a vampire should look like. Very impressive paint job, too! :Vampire1:

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Wraith added

Thank you for encouragement and thoughts. I am in a process of painting a lot of things at once but my love is going into my Vampire army.

I am working on the core units now and firing all cylinders late into the nights after work.
Mainly a large block of 40 warriors in the mid stages of completion.
I was never a fan of lungless undead carrying large wind instruments into battle so I set about creating my own musician model. I had some inspiration from my childhood (more about that on my blog) and I am quite happy with the final posing and sculpy work so I have begun painting.

So here is another WIP for my legion.. Saint-Saëns - Danse Macabre WIP

Raising the Dead..
So after a weekend of hobby (including a 5 hour epic game of Super Dungeon Explore!) my undead core units are coming along well... I hope to have them on the battlefield within a week. I spent more time than I had counted on creating the musician for the unit, and I am still deciding on a standard bearer model/conversion for the unit.

Still a way to go but the bonework is done and the weapons and shields are weathered and rusted (the latter are yet to be attatched to many of the models). Small weapon/armour accents such as hilts, scale mail will be brassy/gold and weathered with turquoise to pop them. Belts will be dark leather + mouldy green.
Then finally basing and we are ready for war!

More creepy things to come...

Really makes my efforts feel sub par looking through plogs like this, your musician is a brilliant idea.

Thanks guys. Started the assembly of this little chap last night and the sculpy was tough enough to file, fill and prime tonight. I hope he will make a curious and dramatic accompaniment for the Violinist musician model.

I have left off the skull for the top, that's something else I am working on..
Still unsure on the paint direction for the banner but red is the unit theme so..bloodstained, mouldy, micro mottling and staining will be the basis on the canvas, regardless of the iconography I choose at a later date. I'm leaning towards something like an hour glass filled with blood.

More creepy stuff soon.

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Battle Standard WIP added 01/04/13

More progress made on the standard bearer for the skeleton warriors core unit.
It's a nice break from rank and file painting, as most undead generals will likely agree..
I am pleased with the way the bloodstains came out, rather than splatter 'blood' on a lighter canvas I went for the challenge of trying to bloodstain a red 'canvas' banner. The effect looks quite nice I hope without adding any usual glossy red gunky varnish/tamiya clear red effects yet etc. The very tips will be glossier and wet looking during the final work on it.
For the icon I decided instead to go browsing gothic fonts; I went for a simple Initial for the Ravenstein Bloodline.

Really nice work on that banner! Are you going to add any of the tamiya clear red effects to it?

Just a little bit of sticky blood mix to the banner tendrils on the tips - after I matt varnish spray the model when it's almost done of course.

Raising the Dead WIP 2

Tonight I was spending more time on each skeleton now with adding details, and using various soft pastel shades to bring the shadows up and down on them, and on weaponry and armour details. Still lots to do but here is a photo update. Some of the soft blues and oranges are starting to lift each other now I hope. Baron Ravenstein of course wanted to lead his little minions.

Undead Battle Standard WIP 3

I wanted something different for my standard bearer icon in the skeleton warrior core unit, something that would be unique, eyecatching but also narrative for my army.
I decided to go for a carrion bird skull, after all, Ravenstein is my Vampire Bloodline name.

corvusmellori_s.jpg

There's a connection there - plus I really like the skull shapes. A good friend of mine also painted a fantastic picture a while ago with a character having an oversize crow/raven skull for a head (wearing a top hat) and I think the imagery has stuck in my mind. Well, maybe not the top hat.. but the skull is something I wanted to have a go at one day.

So after a deliberation over bits to use I decided to just go ahead and sculpt my own. I wanted something sturdy and I really prefer carving solid resin than making greenstuff bits all the time for minis. Resin carving is very easy to do and (thanks to forgeworlds generosity) I have plenty of chunks of useless resin laying around to experiment with.

It's very fast, I only need 3 tools: A scalpel blade, a pinvice hobby drill and a small emery board for sanding (although most smoothing can be done with the edge of a scalpel scraping gently.) I decided to go a little oversize so as I carved it down I still had plenty to play with. I also wanted the skull to stand out visually so I decided on measurements and then using a pair of chunky snips I tore off a chunk of resin to begin the process.

Dscf2569.webp

Next I just roughly chopped it to bird skully shape.. No need for precision just yet.

Dscf2570.webp

Next step was to drill out some guide holes for eye socket carving.
I went right through the side of the skull so I can better judge either side and socket positions were equal.. in theory!

Dscf2571.webp

I used the scalpel to start to define the main skull structure lines and contours.
Having a picture for reference here helps, so I browsed many different photos of carrion bird skulls for inspiration and direction whilst carving away gently at the resin.

Dscf2572.webp

Next step was to work on the nasal cavity. Using a pinvice drill I again went through the skull at the rear/back of the beak on the top either side.

Dscf2573.webp

These little guide holes were then widened lengthwise along the ridge of the beak.

Dscf2574.webp

More scraping, shaping and definition added at this stage.

Dscf2576.webp

Starting to polish the shapes and tidy up.

Dscf2577.webp

Working on the symmetry..getting there almost..

Dscf2578.webp

Very fine polishing work and final definitions.

Dscf2581.webp

As this is a fiddly little piece I decided to magnetise it so it can be easily removed from the banner if required.. Totally unnecessary but I know some clumsy gamers and would rather it didn't need gluing on every time it gets sent across the battlefield by errant sleeves etc.

Dscf2583.webp

So this is the beaky icon..

Dscf2582.webp

And magnetised to the banner bearer..

It's simple and I hope effective.. just need to give it some paint..and perhaps that tophat ...

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Carrion Skull Resin Carving added 03/04/13

Now we just gotta figure out why a bird skull is on top of a humanoid skeleton and we're set! Looks fairly well, plus I totally empathize with carving down being easier than building up/sculpting :ghost: Looks good though, certainly get's the point across, maybe not as "Airy/Open" as the original picture, but nice. I also appreciate all the shots during the process, great for anyone who wants to "watch over your shoulder" kinda thing. I usually find it easier to learn from watching people (Or making mistakes myself), but I guess that makes sense, it's a rather visual medium.

Also, those swords of yours, wow. Those look amazing, across the unit, the slight differences in colour really look great there. And the very light blues on the undersides of the bones, it looks amazing from a short distance; I especially love the shots from the side, the first and second pics. Stunning. Although the right hand side (The shot on their right, the second picture) does look like the flat's of the blades have a bit more blues to them, was that intentional? (The underside of the blade for the most of them I would suspect) Just not sure if intentional, or if that just happened by chance. If you look between those two pictures, the first looks a ton warmer than the second :konrad:

The gothic K.. I mean R, looks amazing though. Do you pencil in what you're painting before hand? Or just dig in?

Excellent work, keep on truckin' :pumpkin:

Oh man, your plog is amazing. I love love love that musician, truly inspired. I have the same problem with skellies having trumpets, but my issue was that they don't have lips! The violinist is inspired.

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Carrion Skull Resin Carving added 03/04/13

Impressive work on the bird skull! :O

I like your choice of colours. What kind of bases will you give your models? These will look mightily impressive when finished.

RE: Ravensteins Workshop - Carrion Skull Resin Carving added 03/04/13

I have been resculping crypt horror/vargeist kits this weekend to give me Werewolves/Lycans for my Sylvanian army. I used Fenrisian wolf heads, crypt horror arms and vargeist backs. Still lots more to do but I'm happy with the fur so far. The bases will be a bone strewn rocky lair.

I will get photos of the other 2 when they reach this stage of resculpt, but they are almost ready for the tiny details..This first one is called 'Kessler'.

I have yet to add arm torcs and other accessories. Colour scheme will most likely match my direwolf pack, but that is a long way off.

More creepy things soon!

Looks amazing Ravenstein, the transitions to your own sculpt is really tidy, great work! Love to see em painted up.

Wow that re-sculpt is SO good.. Look really good together! Only thing a bit out of place is the feet that sadly doesn't feel all that wolf-like... But seriously this would have been a better new sculpt / model in the "new" crypt horror kit... REALLY great job.! I actually want to dismantle my own and try this out :D
