RE: Questing Vamps

Some fantastic models in there. All you conversions are done superbly, the knight and the fellbat - ghouls standing out. The painting is really good as well, I know that yellow can be hard to paint but you have pulled it off well.

Plus the sexy female vampire adds bonus points

RE: Questing Vamps

I'm with DoN here, that female vamp looks very sexy, I might pick her up myself.
As always the paintjobs are well done. Your current Knight-project looks intriguing. I assume they will be reinforcements for your already finished blood knight?

Oh, and may I ask what you did to the horses? the black and white stuff looks strange to me. Is it some other sort of green stuff?

RE: Questing Vamps

i like the idea of the Varghulf being this crazy head lopping figure on the back of a horse. A a good twist on the standard idea and you've posed a good looking model. Not playing the game myself much dosent he he still have to be on the normal base? Looking forward to seeing him painted, nice looking plog

RE: Questing Vamps

@Santawraith: The vampire is actually a bard model, though I do have intentions of turning the vampire hunter model you are thinking of into a vampire! The perversion of its original cause is something that strikes me as very cruel irony.

@Count Lasombra: Yeah the shield needs to be washed to make it in keeping with the other shields I have done. I actually painted her shield while I rules judging for the 40K ard Boyz earlier this year and it was such a long time between painting sessions that i had forgotten i wasn't washing the shields. I'm kind of glad I forgot though, because I think the washed look is much better.

@Dogmar: These Knights are additions to the existing unit, only five right now. I am considering doing another box of them so I can run an 8 man unit and have 2 more horses for characters.

The horses are actually WIP in that picture. The black is a two stage wash with Vallejo Black wash and then a heavy wash of GW Asurmen Blue and Leviathan purple. I wanted to get that glossy black oily look for the horses, then I highlighted them with a little bit of Astronomicon Grey. I did that first because washes really need to be done on a pristine white base coat.

@Nikostratus: The Varghulf needs to be on a 50mm base if I recall correctly, right now I have one one on a 40mm base because thats all I had at the time. Eventually he will be migrated over to a proper base.

@all: Thanks for all the compliments, makes it a lot easier to paint knowing there are other people out there enjoying my work!

And now for the updates!

I had a very productive day yesterday, got about 6 really good hours of painting in at the store. The horses are now about 80% complete.

I also finished Barbarossa's shield and got the decals on it. Of course I didn't see the huge black smudge until I went to take pictures today, so I am going to have to fix that.

I also took some much improved pictures of the Vampire Necromancer Garghoul and zombies. I ran them through my meager Photoshop skills to clean up and sharpen the images and I think I made them look much closer to reality now.

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy)

Really nice collection of stuff in here sir, the blood knight conversions are a really nice great choice of parts for them great paint job to boot :)

I love the converted fellbat too, looks like a crazy experiment of necarach vampire if I add fellbats to my force I think i might use yours as inspiration :D

keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing more

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy)

Didn't have time to do much yesterday on account of playing Halo:Reach with my roommate and grilling, just got a bit of wash work done on some hounds. I also put all the semipainted ghouls and a couple characters onto a movement tray for a photo op.

A friend of mine is really great at making huge unit banners. I am going to have him give me a tutorial on how he does his stuff.
He does banners like this for all of his units.

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy)

Those models are pretty awesome. I'm really liking the yellow to really make the models 'pop' and set them apart from other Vampire armies which tend to be very dark.

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy)

Didn't get any painting done the last couple of days, but I did get a few Vampires built today.

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy)

impressive stuff i love how you have a skull in the hat of the skeleton too. that unit banner is a great idea now i know what to do with all those skull bits that are adding up

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy)

I actually hadn't looked closely enough at the hat to realize it had a skull on it. I only noticed afterwards when I was taking pictures of the primed model!

The skull banner was a pain in the butt for him to make! He spent weeks begging every person in the store to give him any skulls he could find. He also spent hours trolling the web looking for skull beads or cheap places to get skulls. Eventually he wound up buying a box of skeletons or something!

I got a little bit of work done last night. Not much since it was the SG:U and No Ordinary Family premiers along with an episode of NCIS. But I did get the 2 wash layers done for the skin Foundation on the four vampires. I start with an Asurmen Blue wash then follow up with Leviathan purple. This is then built up with Ice Blue, Elf flesh and Skull white. I might get some stuff done tonight, but Wednesdays at the Game store are usually not terribly productive!

Still trying to decide just how to paint the vampire's armor/clothes.

The Vampire lord I think is going to have silver armor like the Wight King, but with a Red tinting instead of blue along with a shield just like everyone else's.

The Vampire with the Daemon Monkey thing i'm still totally undecided on. I think a change from yellow is needed, but I have no idea what I should change to!

The Vampire in the gown with the double scythe thingy is going to have a mint green dress.

The Flying Vampire is still a totally mystery to me. I know only that I want to make the big Crotch cape thingy yellow.

Any Ideas?

And finally, because I hate posting without putting up some pictures. here is some freehand I did on a Landraider a little while back. Think of it as a taste of what I plan to do for my unit banners.

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy)

Its looking fantastic so far. the fell bats are much nicer than the GW, Where did the The Vampire with the Daemon Monkey thing come from?

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy)

I think the necro w/ familiar's dress would look good that dark orange color that you used for the wash.It would tie in well. There is also that blue tone that seems to prevail in many of your creases(unless that is the plan for the skin).

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy) Updated 10-02-10

@Count Lasombra: I like the idea of a muted orange dress, maybe Macharian Orange with a Ogryn Flesh wash? As you can see in the pictures the Vampire skin starts out very dark, especially in the crevices.

Pictures of the Vamps as they are currently.

I'm working on that that vamp w/ familiar's sister right now.The skin is looking good.

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy) Updated 10-02-10

Wow those look great! I really love the flying vamp.

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy) Updated 10-02-10

Made some major progress on the Vampire lord tonight. Painted the skin tones and got a good start on the armor and shield.

The first stage after the washes is a thin coat of Ice blue everywhere but the deepest recesses.
ai762.photobucket.com_albums_xx268_CruorVault_IMG_20101004_171820_1.webp

I then mix a 50/50 batch of Elf flesh and Skull white, over that I put a coat of Skull white on all the highlights. I redress the recesses with a thinned coat of Asurmen Blue and wash the whole thing with a thinned Ogryn flesh. After that the sharpest highlights get hit with Skull white again. Finally the eyes are painted blood red with a blazing orange pupil, then they get washed with leviathan purple. The Hair is simple chaos black with adeptus battle grey highlights and then a final highlight of space wolves grey.
ai762.photobucket.com_albums_xx268_CruorVault_IMG_20101004_182415.webp

The Armor is chainmail over black with a thinned Baal red wash.
ai762.photobucket.com_albums_xx268_CruorVault_IMG_20101004_191913.webp

Over the Baal red wash I highlighted the the armor with mithral silver and then a final highlight of mithril and skull white. The armor is then washed with a thin coat of devlan mud.
ai762.photobucket.com_albums_xx268_CruorVault_IMG_20101004_195450.webp

Finally the shield as it stands now.

RE: Questing Vamps (Pict Heavy) Updated 10-02-10

I really like how the red armor stands out. You could redefine the decoration on the shoulders and the chestplate with some more highlights, maybe even in a different colour to make him even more eye-catching. Don't know if that fits with the colours you are planning to do the sword and the cloth with though.

Keep us updated with pics. I'm sure the finished product will look great.
