Whats the difference between true metallic metals, and say...the way Santa and I do our metals? (A metallic paint followed by a wash)

The Wife: I beleive I'm right in saying that the way you paint metal is True Metallic Metal. The term is just used to differentiate between using metallic paints (True Metallic Metal) and approximating the effect using standard colours (Non Metallic Metal).

Wife, M_U has it right on. Many painters are inclined to paint metals in either one of two ways: metallic paints with thin washes/ glazes or simulating metals with Non Metallic Paints. I can go either route, but to my eye, neither looks just right (that's just my opinion). My way focues on establishing a strong but very thing basecoat of metallic paint then then using various blending methods to create depth, age, and substance to the metals I'm working on. These effects are accomplished with using very thing glazes or "filters" of paint, be it acrlyics or enamels. The goal is to add color and depth to the metal while being thin enough to still see the metallic paint.
I start each portion of metallics with a mix of 50% thinner and 50% metallic paint; I always start with a color much lighter than what the metal will actually be (You can always go darker). With a base of metallic paint down, I take my shading colors, say deep browns, some greens, blues, and so forth to create the depths of the metals. Then I'll backtrack a bit and work on the highlights. To top if off, I'll reinvigoate the metals again by adding thin glazes of metallic paint towards the highlights if need be. It takes a bit, but once your done, the results are fantastic!

He's quite beastly and I love him. I'm trying to decide if I want any areas, say the shoulder pads to be straight paint or not. We'll see how it goes. It'll be a great project and an excellent contest piece I'm entering for a local contest!
