The situations aren't really comparable, considering that you leaking things could kill people.

Eh, whatev's.

No...my leak would not kill people. It might thwart justice though. But the principal is the same. One should be loyal to the interests of one's employer.

And were you calling for harry or hastings to be hunted down and fired in the lead up to nagash, when we liked the rumors we were getting? Plus you're basing your own purchasing decisions on these rumors, and thus profiting from them in that way. To be throwing shade at the rumor sources while doing so is a little bit like condemning people who put copyrighted videos online, while downloading and watching them yourself. Just a touch hypocritical, maybe?

Regardless, GW's a big kid company run by grown ups. They can handle themselves.

I agree with Yorga. Of course there is the possibility that Harry is being allowed to leak choice things and then GW is measuring metrics based on changes in revenue trends.

For example, the end times books were built off of how well the armies sold. Vampires is their top selling army, followed by warriors/daemons, followed by the elves, then skaven. They could be measuring changes in their number of units sold at each stage of end times and as rumors are release, to get as measure of changes as they go. It's interesting that undead legion aside, the releases all merge into Archaon's super army!

It's worth noting that Harry and Hastings were not the first to break this stuff. No, the first was the infamous 'Spanish Rumors', which presented a similar overall direction, but if anything in an even more negative light. One or the other of the H's had hinted at big things coming, but provided no details until the cat was arguably out of the bag already, and looking even more ugly, lending credence to the possibility that H&H's leaks may be in some way sanctioned from within. Perhaps not officially from the people actually in charge, but by someone savy enough to know that the 'zero info till day of preorder' policy is just fundamentally unfeasible.

Because regardless of whether H&H are deliberate leaks or not, perfect silence in a situation like this is an unreasonable goal, non-disclosure agreements or no. Too many people involved, once your doing any testing at all, and if you're doing literally no testing then you just cannot make a good game. You just can't. It's non-negotiable.

I mean, they've clearly been trying to cut corners on testing for codeces and army books, if they were to try to do that for a new edition of the game itself, especially one representing a major change in direction, the results would be disasterous.

Then don't work for them.

Not everyone has that luxury. My qualifications are career specific, and my options are either work for my current employer, a soulless corporation, or move cities and work for the state. I choose to stay local for family reasons. I like my industry, but my current employer is very combative and has no clue about how to build morale and staff welfare is about the lowest priority on their list, so I feel no loyalty to them.

Sure, I understand those sentiments too. But when you work for someone your supposed to have their best interest in mind. Its part of the social contract of accepting their money and aligning yourself with their work force. At the very least, leaking confidential information is dishonest. More than likely its breaking a contract somewhere, which means they aren't doing what their employer wished and could face legal action.

I enjoy rumors and official leaks too. But if I was GW, and I wanted something kept secret so our marketing plans and projects launch successfully, I'd be really pissed off if an employee broke that trust. But like I said, Harry and Hastings might be "leaking" intentionally. Their leaks might cause reactions GW can measure and it controls the leaks and keeps the hungry masses chewing on the bones we get from them instead of becoming starved and rabidly going after the more closely guarded secrets.

Heck, for all we know, they run ideas pass us this way and see the response. Like a secret way of doing blind tests.

It's a nice thought, but I find it highly unlikely. GW simply doesn't seem as savvy or nimble as they would need to be to do things like that. I mean, for pete's sake, they killed most of their play testing to try and stomp out leaks, literally sacrificing one of the most critical tools in game design in the hopes of stopping the sun from rising.

Perhaps someone high up in the studio is okaying particular leaks, but almost certainly not someone with the authority or official go ahead to do so. And that's the thing with corporations, large or small. There's no singular person to whome allegiance can be offered.

And to my knowledge GW has not, as a rule, treated their employees with any more consideration than their customers or the retailers who sell their product. That sort of loyalty is a two way street. Treat your employees as interchangeable and expendable cogs in a machine, and you can't expect them to show you any more loyalty than you show them.

One of the failings of our time is this belief that an employee should be obligated to have their employer's best interests at heart without an equal and opposite reciprocal mandate.

When you make these sort of statements about GW, do you have anything to base them on other than outside opinion? What confirmation do you have that GW shutdown their playtesters to shut off leaks? WOTC manages to extensive playtest magic without leaks occurring. Magic is a bit different beast since there is a pro circuit of players.

I will agree though that an employer should respect their employees. But again, that goes back to who and where you choose to work. Maybe not all cases, like Blutsauger mentioned, but most still.

Leaks, funnily enough, from just shy of 4e 40k. Especially as a reaction to the leaking of an entire late-in-the-process playtest tyranid codex (the 3.0 book, the one that, iirc, first introduced rending, back when it was auto-wound and ignore armor on sixes. In the play test book you could give it to entire units of gaunts, it was pretty sick). Admittedly, I suppose that was a while ago, now, so things have almost assuredly changed since then. Huh. Time does have a way of slipping past us old geezers.

Individual employees are under considerably greater compulsion to work regardless of their feelings for or treatment by their employers. After all, if the employment relationship falls through, the employee is at risk of going without food, shelter, and medical care if they cannot find other employment quickly. The employer rarely if ever faces the same sort of existentially catastrophic consequences, while simultaneously usually having a far easier time finding a substitute.

Given the difference in relative power & vulnerability involved, the moral imperative should, if anything, be far more heavily levied against the employer, to disincentivize systemic institutional abuse.

Just thought you guys might like to know, josh Reynolds is urging people to pick up any BL novels they are after soon as they will not be around much longer...

Do any of you have any of those books, to recommend any in particular?

EDIT: an interesting thought just occured to me as I was admiring Arkhan. Might 9e models be in a different scale than previous editions of warhammer?

Think about it - there have been no normal infantry scale releases since the start of end times. The blight kings and wrathmongers are both on 40mm bases, are both significantly larger than other infantry, yet are still classified as 'infantry' and not 'monstrous infantry'. But it's not just them, the stormfiends are significantly larger than the starter box rat ogres, morghasts noticeably largher than horrors and vargheists. The maggoth riders and mortarchs also seem to match the scale of the blightkings rather than previous infantry or even characters. Seriously, if arkhan were standing on the ground, would krell even reach his chin?

I mean, they're probably just big models to go with all the big events, but it kinda makes you wonder.

SuperRogres are also on 50mm's. I know it's a bit OT, but if they had managed to forsee the desire to have multiples of the same weapon option in a Stormfiend unit they could have sold me that box in a heartbeat. Awesome models, killer in game, and not super expensive $-wise for a Rare unit. But one Ratling Rogre per box?

*Off to put IoB Rogres on 50mm's with Tau suit guns on their arms and cork on the base to make them taller*

Seriously, would have bought in a heartbeat.

I bet you can find bitz sellers for the weapons. If not that, scratch building weapons from your own bits is possible. But the models are too awesome to not use them. I'd buy a box and figure out how to convert or magnetize if it was me.

I've been working on some conversions for the Stormfiends. I've got a post on my blog showing how I made some extra warpstone armor and I'll have one for making more gauntlets up soon. After that will be the rattling cannons.

I bought 2 boxes and magnetized all the parts, so with the conversions I'll be able to build 4 doom-flayer gauntlets with a grinder; 4 rattling cannons; and a combination of windlaunchers & warpfire projectors.
