@death dreamer: I may be one of the few that actually owb blood knight models and that was through trade lol. Those dude are expensive! I don't blame people for alternatives! How would you convert dragon princes to look like blood knights? I mean, maybe change the platemail to chainmail but other than that you have blood dragons vs dragon princes and they both have similar features in their armor and style. And they look great! Blood knight look a bit derpy imo.

Well personally I am absolutely infatuated with the Blood Knights, to such a degree that I write my own fluff for them, character descriptions etc. and I love the models xD.

But if I were to convert some Dragon Princes I would use some Black Knight or Grave Guard bits to make them look more undead, and use some of the shields from those sets. I think it would be a good idea to also use the mounted vampire lord bits from the Zombie Dragon kit (buy the bits online) because those are perfect for Blood Dragon Vampires.
Of course the amount of bits needed would probably bring the cost of the unit close to the proper blood knight unit so you probably wouldn't be saving much. Also the Blood Knights are fairly priced in my opinion, being the same level of detail as any special character, if not moreso (thanks to good old Mike Anderson).
Also you have to consider that these guys are more powerful than Bretonnian Paladins (Hero choices) in close combat and get a better ward vs shooting!

Oh god... I hope nobody ever finds out that my Master Necromancer is a Wood Elf. Or that my Black Knights are riding 4th edition 'Undead' skeleton horses rather than legit Vampire Counts skeletal horses. My Banshees aren't Banshees at all, merely ghosts and I use the same minis as Ghouls or Zombies depending on my mood.

Hey, me too! But I suppose none of that counts if I use the wrong elite knights in dragon themed armour?

Lol, I would agree with you if they were new sculpts, if you could still buy them individually, and if they came with the right bits for the unit, and if all other knights were around the same price. a box of 5 comes with 1 champ, 1 musician, 1 standard, and 2 with lances. Meaning if you want to run a naked unit of 5 blood knights you would have to buy 3 boxes of them to get 5 of them with lances! All other knights out there are around $33.00 (Black, Cold Ones, Chaos, etc.)

But if I were to convert some Dragon Princes I would use some Black Knight or Grave Guard bits to make them look more undead, and use some of the shields from those sets.

Which bits would you use?
1. Blood Knights are vampires not skeleton based. So you can't use any of the helms, arms or legs for them.
2. The sheilds wouldn't make a lot of sense, They're Blood Knights are from the Blood Dragon blood line, thus they should have dragon based armor/sheilds. Taking away dragon themed sheilds and replacing them with standard undead sheilds doesn't follow their fluff at all.
3. You could potentially use the lances off of the black knights, that'd work okay, but will that be a whole lot of difference?
4. The Zombie Dragon lord is a big boy! If you were going to use him then I would suggest switching to Chaos Knights. It would be really tough to get him to look right on a little high elf horse!

I think the best way to convert these things is to wreck the horses a bit. Some exposed flesh/bones may do the trick, or in fact any way to dirty them up a little bit (The horses, not the knights, the knights should be clean). High Elf horses are clean and perfect, but Nightmares aren't. Also, like I said before, replace the platemail with chainmail. Platemail seems to be a elf thing (although there are some grave guard that have platemail).

@Minty: Your Necro is a Wood Elf! Get the F**k off of my forum!

Well you see you've just outlined all the problems when converting or using *cheap* proxies for blood knights - the size of the models is off, the actual bits don't look right, the actual models don't look right... Some people will do anything to save even the smallest amount of money

Also unless you're new to the hobby you should know of a magical little thing called EBAY where you can get relatively cheap second hand models, including Blood Knights, or you can go somewhere that does a discount like many clubs and online shops and whatnot.

However Here's a head that would look good on a proxy- blood knight because the face is obscured:

http://www.letthedicedecide.co.uk/ekmps/shops/letthedice/images/vampire-counts-grave-guard-head-c-8393-p%5Bekm%5D288x287%5Bekm%5D.jpg

Oh I agree that they are too small, and yeah you can get second hand all day! I actually resin cast my own stuff (Shhhh!), but a lot of people don't know that and when you can get 15 cav for the same price that you can get 5 it's really tempting to go that route. Especially if you're just starting off.

Since I have 10 blood knights already I've never really looked at even trying to convert Dragon Prices, Although the bulk would be my biggest issue with them, I was thinking of making cold ones into black knights though! I think that would be a fun conversion idea, but that conversation is for another thread.

I'm still not the biggest fan of that head (I have like 4 of them in my Grave Guard unit and I just don't like the way they look), but that personal opinion.

The whole "getting dragon princes and painting them red" idea wouldn't work out to well for me either seeing as how my entire VC army is blue. So they would look like dragon princes and thats it lol.

"fairly priced" is a combination of words I rarely use while talking about something GW metallic/finecasted :)

You can say the same about all GW minis. They're ripoff merchants pure and simple, taking advantage of idiotic people (the same kind of people who bought the "limited edition" Space Marine codices  ). However, if you aren't suffering from serious mental retardation :perv:, you should know that eBay is the place to go for GW minis.

Psst! Deathless Dreamer, over here...

You... You realise you just insulted almost everybody on this forum, and almost every other person who does or has ever played the warhams, right? Twice.

Perhaps you could calm down a touch? I realise I am an idiotic person with serrious mental retardation, and that I have deeply offended your Blood Dragon honour (s'funny, I distinctly recall saying Blood Knights were the only rare I like, but esh-vesh), but if I promise not to go through with my plan of using My Little Ponies as unit fillers will you forgive me?

Lol alright, but I was only being half-serious . What I'm trying to say is that there are many ways of acquiring the proper Blood Knight models for much lower prices than what GW charge, and I think it's silly to complain about the prices when you can easily find them for less if you look around.

Come on now yall! I love this forum and those who are in it! Lets not fight about model choices and interpretations!

That said, I buy all the models I can from the local shop because I don't want them to shut down.

Just sharing some pictures. If you find them of interest, more will be taken.

Just finished my first blood knight, pretty happy with the result, will post the full unit once it's done :)

Nice flesh tones on the mount there mate, also great work on the rebasing, I know how much of a pain Blood Knights can be.
Thanks :) Was very worried about the skin to start with as I thought it was going to be too bright (especially starting with rakarth flesh lol) But pretty impressed with how it turned out. Had a nice tip from someone to lightly drybrush the skin with a light green to give it a bit of a zombified effect, can't really see in the photo though

:| . . .wow. I applaud you good sir. That is both extremely well done, and creative.

On another note please post more pictures of this elsewhere! I can see some "gargoyle-esque" vargheists in the background, a vampire lord, and grave guard..

Looking sexy in your winter theme mate.
Don't really understand the rainbow knights though truth be told...

Then please allow me to explain. :)

The knights being different colours is part of my army background. The knights are part of an order called quite simply the Knights of Death. The order is comprised of around 50 Blood Knights and is truly ancient, having existed since before the Empire. They're led by Viktor Ravenhoft, a baron who was betrayed by his own people and fought alongside Nagash loyally in ancient days, and are divided into four semi-separate divisions, called Aspects, led by a leader known as a Scourge.

Viktor is the Scourge of Bloodshed, while the others are Amelia Beaumort, Scourge of Anguish, Zeliek von Ruinberg, Scourge of Winter, and Markus Komnenos, Scourge of Decay.

They all dwell in a frozen, icy netherworld in a fortress called the Necropolis, which is represented on the board I made. Needless to say, they have dwelt in the fortress for thousands of years awaiting the return of their master, Nagash, while training near-constantly, taking breaks to indulge in sickening acts of murder, cruelty and lust, or invading the mortal realm to practice their terrifying martial skills on live targets, slaughter innocents, and take prisoners to use in rituals, as target dummies, or as food.

Each Aspect represents a different blight upon humanity, and those Aspects are Bloodshed (or War), Winter, Anguish and Decadence (or Decay). These Aspects each have a colour that represents them, hence the different colours, with Bloodshed being represented by red, Winter by blue, Anguish by purple and Decay by rusty metal or patina bronze. The Aspects also have images that define them, with Anguish being the weeping eye, Winter being icicles or weeping faces, Bloodshed being fangs, bats or weapons, and Decay not having a defined image. The Aspects aren't uniform though and each knight retains an element of their original heraldic colours that they have kept from their mortal lives.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I just wanted to get across that I have put a lot of thought into this army and a lot of effort.

It's a fantastic piece, I'll have to put up some photos of my army on parade (no where near the same level as this).

Only comment I'd make is on your background. If the order predates the Empire, then it's unlikely the leader would hold the title of "Baron". The concept of it being an order of Blood Knights would be hazy as well, as your statement of age indicates they would predate Bretonnia as well, the Blood Knights having descended from one of their Knightly groups.

If they stood alongside Nagash in the ancient days then they would most likely be of Nehekharan origin (which would make their Empire germanic names slightly awkward).

I get what you've done and it's very well executed, I think it's just a bit more brightly coloured than I'm used to and the whole grim dark setting I'm used to. I probably would have tried to keep it a bit darker themed. Only thing I don't get is the multicolored grave guard weapons. The whole piece actually reminds me of world of Warcraft, probably cause the terrain looks almost cartoony. Amazing paint jobs and the freehand is awesome. What did you make the terrain out of btw? And is the castle the GW scenery?
