Hello all!

When searching the web I found a beautiful vampire lord for my army, the only problem is, he is on a 40x40mm base. Not only does this greatly affect the model in game, but I also want to put him in a regiment, meaning it will affect the ranks as well.

Are there any rules about this?

Also, are there any rules about the base sizes of monsters. Every dragon seems to have it's own size base nowadays..

Thanks!

There are no real rules about base sizes other than you are supposed to use the size of base that was supplied, however no one is really going to complain if you mount it on a larger base as it means they will be able to get more attacks against whatever it is.

the character can still join units, you will just be displacing 3 rank and file models and doubling the ammount of incoming attacks. Not particularly ideal. Which model is it? how big is it and does it really need to be mounted on a 40mm base? It might not be too hard to downsize it to a smaller one.

Heya, thanks for the reply!

The model is this one:

Which I think will be an excellent Vampire Lord in my army!

I am planning of uing him as a caster, savely in a skeleton bunker. I am not that competitive, so the few drawbacks are worth it, just wondering if it would be legal.

Thanks again!

yeah it's legal. It's a called scenic base or something along those lines. I would just check up on the rules for Look out sir though (dont have my book on me) as I cant remember if the unit has to have the same base size to use look out sir (which is quite important, dont want that caster lord getting shot right out of it's bunker)

EDIT: is this the first not-gw model in the army though? (apart from your lego model) because from what i can see your army is still valid for use in GW stores and tournaments if you ever feel like entering. something to consider before you throw those opportunities away :P

Different stores and gaming environments tend to have different opinions on how much you're allowed to deviate from standard base sizes, but most places are gonna probably be a bit more lenient towards up-sizing than they are downsizing...since, as mentioned, you're displacing your own models in doing so. Not only does this allow more enemy units to make base contact on a single model, but it can potentially decrease unit mobility and of course makes your character in question far easier to hit with templates, since you're basically increasing his "hit-box," as it were to 400% of normal.

I don't recall the issue being directly addressed in the Fantasy rulebook, but in 40k, my understanding is that increasing base size for aesthetic reasons is allowed so long as you accept the tactical issues it presents, so I would imagine a similar official stance for Fantasy.

It's down-sizing bases that most people are gonna have more problems with. I mean I'd certainly be crying foul on somebody who based their big monsters a couple sizes too small.

Interesting read, thanks!!

so the conclusion is lots of drawbacks, just for one cool model. Hehe, that's easy. Will oder him soon!

First non-GW model yeah, but I don't think I will play a lot of GW tournaments. I prefer playing just with friends and else I will just replace him.

Why not "count" him as a vampire lord and three skeletons? Just designate a a 20x20 mm square in one corner of the base to represent the vampire lord and have the rest of the base to represent three models from whatever unit he joins, just be sure to remove three models from that unit when he joins it.

And by the way, awesome model. It will look great in your army.

Yeah, I'm completely in love with him! (he would also fit great in your army :zombie: )

Been thinking about designating him, or maybe by placing some extra skeletons in his base, but that would only lead to more confusion (since not a single model in the army is a normal one :zombie2:

Mad'at thou art smart one.

I agree, this is the best solution and i think its not confusing as much as having a 40x40mm vampire character,he would would also be entitled to a stomp attack and be immune to Killing Blow according to the rules and that just doesn't seem to fit.It would look similar of the Grail Reliquae model.

As long as the base is bigger then the base it comes with it aint considerd a rule break, but you can not use a smaller base then it came with though as that would be considerd a rule break. Bigger base is most often just a dissadventage as it do take up more space in your regiment.

It wouldn't be entitled to either of those things. It's troop type is still infantry, not monstrous infantry. Swarms dont get stomp after all. Counting three parts of it as skeletons has the issue of your unit not being able to contract it's shape properly as the remainder of the unit dies as well, and keeping track of whether certain parts of the vampire's base is alive. Best just to treat him as a single model. You can take out a unit filler, but you cant take out the vampire Till it dies.
