Snowy Vampire Counts Army

Hey guys I've recently gotten back into fantasy and my VC army and decided to start painting them. This will be my first attempt at painting an army and I hope to share my progress with you guys. It's my hope that by updating this painting log it'll help keep me motivated.

I plan to go with a blue colour scheme, with bronze coloured armour. I also plan for them to all be on snow bases.

Below is a photo I took of my skeleton bunker unit. Officially my first completed unit ever! I haven't added any detail onto the banner yet as I'm not quite up to trying anything so fancy with my basic painting skills.

I plan to complete my ghoul unit next along with my unit of grave guard. I'll try post some pics of them tomorrow.

I've been thinking of using a few unit fillers for my ghoul unit though being new to this I'm not really sure what I could use for them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I always had a weak spot for the winter theme! I just love how the cold blizzards of the North have absolutly no effect on the undead, while it could detroy entire mortal armies in mere minutes!

As for fillers: fillers are awesome and you should have as many as possible!

A few tips for winter-ghoul-fillers:

-Tree in the snow,
-Graveyard in the snow,
-Gallow in the snow,
-Ruins in the snow,
-Victim being eaten by ghouls, his blood colouring the snow,
-snowman! (maybe the ghouls are making one)
-Ghoulish yeti (see Ogres), monsters make great fillers!
-Ghouls eating santa
-Ghouls having a snowfight (maybe they even created some defensive snowwalls to protect themselves against the snowballs!)
-etc

I was thinking of going with grave stones / statues and maybe a tree or so for the unit fillers. Not quite sure where I'll get my hands on some. Best get searching so that I can get onto finishing the ghouls.

Well here are the photos of the progress made on the ghouls so far. Hope the quality isn't too bad as I'm taking the photos with my iphone and it's really rubbish in poor light.

The next step will be to get them all to that standard and then complete the snow bases and perhaps put some blood / poison on their claws in a similar way to the blood on the skeletons weapons.

Below are a couple close up pictures of one of the skeletons. I hope that the blood on his weapon is visible in the photo.

Good stuff there - good luck with the unit filers too Would something like a cairn entrance open in the ground with ghouls spilling out of it work too? They stay below ground in the cairns for warmth, but come barrelling out like angry ants if you disturb them? I don't think you need to worry about the quality of the pictures - they have come out very well indeed

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to play around a little with a few ideas and see what works best.

Nearly finished my unit of ghouls now and should have the final pictures up on Friday. I've also been busy on the grave guard and cairn wraiths. Doing my best to get everything done so that I can finally start on my terrorgheist!

The wife loves the snow theme.
Never quite agreed with her until I saw yours.
I won't be changing my army theme, but I will be following yours with awe.

The only thing I could really suggest would be giving a light drybrush of a skin tone to the ghouls? They seem a little "smurfy" to me. But I still think of ghouls as semi-living too.

hey there friend. Looking great so far. And as one who has an army themed with blue i can say, good choice

One piece of advice, one that i started using at the very tail end of my army is, dont fall into the trap of painting every piece of cloth or shild blue. Have enough blue to tie the model together, but break it up with browns, muddy yellows, greys ect ect. It really does help to make the units darker and not as saturated with blue.
In the end, its your army and have fun with it. Good luck.
