RE: Soulseeker's Blog (painting ghouls)

I would like to describe what just happened to me. I'm at work, sitting back in my desk, scrolling through various warhammer forums and I see this. I immediately jump up in my chair and smash my face against the screen to take a closer look at these guys!

Brilliant work! Your painting skill is fantastic, the tones are incredible and the feel of the army is creepy as hell.

RE: Soulseeker's Blog (painting ghouls)

I have signed up for the gamer's challenge, but a month late. So here is my very late June effort, a unit of draugr, er, I mean grave guard.

They are element based as I intend to use them in games like Hail Caesar and Impetus. When I play Warhammer with them I will simply use wound counters, each base is sorta a 6 wound monster.

Next up is a varghulf, which I aiming to finish by the end of the month.

Thanks Adam,

I am on a bit of a roll at the moment, I might paint up a wight king and a couple of wraiths next. I should really get on with a unit of skeletons, but that will take a while and I will probably save that for the end of summer.

I finally painted up my first skeleton regiment, two years after starting the army. Now that's shambling! ;)

I am painting up a vampire and a wraith to accompany these guys into battle, hopefully by the end of the week. Then I think I really need some flyers and/or cavalry. I have also picked up some components for another skeleton regiment, much more unique than this lot, hopefully I can get it done in less than two years.

Wow! Well done. If you are playing warhammer how many bases wide are they? Also, where do you fit your characters if they join the unit?

Thanks. They are 60x40mm at the front, 40x40mm at the back. I would normally play them 6 wide as in the first photo. There are a few singles at the back too, so I can slot in one or two characters if I want to.

Thanks for the comments guys, its always good to get a little feedback.

A pair of characters to lead the skeletons into battle.

The vampire is the first of three brides. She is Miss Black, there will also be a red and a white. The wraith is a Lord of the Rings barrow wight figure, I guess I could use it as a wight king if need be.

The army is 1500+ points now, with most of the big blocks of infantry complete (well, I will probably add more skeletons and more zombies at some stage). I want to add some variety to the mix, maybe some bats or flyers next, and possibly wolves. Or I could paint up some cavalry. They will all get added eventually, it's just a question of deciding which and when to fit them in with all my other painting.

Everything here is fantastic. Really really fantastic.

I hate the Mantic skeletons with a deep and abiding passion, but you made them look good. I have no idea how you managed that, but well done.

I think the biggest problem that mantic have with their skeletons is how they paint them. The sculpts are actually pretty detailed and well cast, mould lines about the same as GW. The faces are cartoon like, but then so are GW. The slot in weapons are not the best but it is possible to make them look reasonable. The shields are incorporated into the bodies and are the worst sculpted detail, basically a slab, or a slab with a few cracks in. So what do matic do? Draw attention to the worst feature (the shield) by painting it in garish, bright colours. I went for GW transfers (from Bretonnians) and heavy weathering. You can also glue other shields over the top of the slabs, as I have in a few examples. I don't think they are as good as mantic zombies/ghouls, but I do think they are good value for money and can, with a little effort, be made to look decent.

I love the gothic look on the vampiress - and the reddish cloth makes a nice accent for the whole mini. The wraith king is also very nice.

As for the skeletons, I must agree with the rest - you've really managed to do something nice with mantic skeletons! ;) Also, your unconventional base sizes makes it very easy for interesting basing ;)

And as soccergopher said - the subtle tones of your painting are awesome!

Ah, you have discovered my secret. I really think that basing this way allows silk purses to be produced from any old sow's ear. Seriously, why don't you try it? If the 3x2 base is too scary, try a 2x2, after all it's simply an ogre sized base (40mmx40mm). It makes set up easier, it's easy to use wound counters - as you already do on your vargheists, coprse carts, characters, etc. And you can build little dioramas if you fancy it. You could even get bigger units for your money - a few bases at the back with 3 figures instead of 4 will hardly be noticed and give you a 25% boost on your numbers.
