With the bones I've gone with a cool white instead of the warm white, I.E. Wolf Gray base instead of bleached bone. I did this so that it wouldn't clash with the warm yellow and so it would match the cool blue eyes. I really like the mantic skellies.

I love hearing about thoughtful color choices. And it does look better for it I think. Good job, although again, I am not a fan of mantic, but your paint job does them more justice than the model does itself :ghost:

@Leithel The skeletons looks very good. Altho I find it funny when you say GW skeleton hands are comical, but have you took a look at mantic skeleton skulls? :D I think the new vampire counts skeletons are very hmm... mature? Can I use that word there hahah, but I guess you know what I'm trying to say.

But anyways, as I said, your skeleton warriors look very good, you also went for clean look for the bones, I did that too. I think it looks so much better than dirty bones, but I guess that's an opinion divider right there, whether or not make the bones dirty. Metal areas looks also very nice! Btw, just yesterday I was painting some yellow surface on my miniature. I had to take a look at your plog for some good tips, thanks! ;)

Yeah, now that you say it I should have known what that name means - the core words are the same as in polish for this ;)

New skeletons are cool, but I would consider adding some highlight of yellow mixed with white - for me the effect right now is a little bit artificial and maybe that could break it. Still, very brave of you for going with yellow - it's probably the worst color ever for painting..... I remember a cool article about painting hard to do colors - maybe it'll make things easier for you or someone else ;) Good luck with further progress

@Sessioni : Oh yeah I totally agree on the mantic vs GW skeletons. I think if I had both boxes and had to choose I'd have picked the GW ones and you're right, it's mostly for the heads. But price was a big factor to me and at less than half the cost the mantic ones looked good enough to me.

Ok so I've been working on my crypt horrors and I'm losing my motivation a little because of how aweful the casts are. I'm finding myself having to use paint to hide the molding errors that I couldn't fix.

With these guys because of the detail after the undercoat I took an airbrush to them and hit them from the zenith. It helped uncover some of the detail and gave me a better starting point. Paiting white is hard though so if you do this I highly recommend doing it light, perhaps a little lighter than mine.

I've got a fair bit further with the first model so more picture to come soon.

So I painted up one of the horrors to see what they are like. They suck a little to paint because of the model issues, but the end result isn't bad. I'd like some feedback from anyone who checks out this plog, mostly around suggestions, colour, ideas or thoughts on what I could do better or hell if you think they're cool that's useful too. My photography makes the blending look harsh like coffee stains, it is a fair bit smoother on the model I promise ;)

Your crypt horror really is horrific! Nice model choice. I like that you decided to paint sewn together skin parts with slightly different skin tones, as it is the Frankenstain's Monster of the warhammer world. One thing I would do differently tho, the blue/turquoise looks a little out of place :D It's funny to say that, but I mean, maybe purple skin tone for some parts to unify them better with the rest of your army? Like you did on some of your zombies. The paint job itself is very nice, would you share the pale/caucasian/main skin tone recipe?

@Sessioni I'm afraid the skin ton formula is really boring but I've used it a few times and it's effective to represent dying deadish skin. It's Vallejo Dark Flesh Tone wet blended up to Vallejo Rotting Flesh. The rotting flesh is almost fluro green but when blended over the dark it comes out nice I think.

@Borgnine Yeah thanks for the feedback and I agree on the turquoise. I had planned to paint over it exactly as you described but the wifey liked it so I decided to leave it. I will do as you suggested on the other guys in the unit.

Thanks heaps for the feedback guys, much appreciated, I'll blend the ideas into the next model and if I like it I can come back and fix this guy up to match.

@Leithel I find the turquoise pretty striking and think it would work really well if it was a colour used for something besides skin. He actually looks cool in a cartoony way and reminds me of the blue & green zombies in World of Warcraft.

As said, nice touch with different tones but earthy neutral tones would work better. Love the paint job, great stuff!

Ok so I'm dead keen on getting into the painting competition and I'm going to post my progress here. I've decided to paint Virgil for the comp.

To start with I've pinned his arms and head. I bought a little micro drill bit set from Jaycar and I have some christmas tree hanging hooks that are perfect for pins. 0.7m drill bit and a guiding hole placed with a scalpel and viola it's all pinned. I didn't think I could paint everything if I didn't pin these parts. I've squared up his round base, and only lost a little bit of the cloak that I'll model into a display stand. I used a little PVA glue painted on to fill the gaps in his cloak, just waiting on that to dry now. Next step base coating.

@Leithel Interesting stuff, I've never heard of this mini before and am interested to see how you go about painting it up.

I'm not sure what I'll be doing for the competition yet. I won't be doing anything especially for it but I've got a few characters to choose from that need painting up, so time will tell!

@Farmer7574 I reviewed it in my review thread on the Siren miniature range. It's been in my backlog for a little while so I figured time to start. To be honest, I'm not sure I"m a good enough painter to do this remarkable miniature justice, but what the hell may as well give it a go.

Ok so painting has begun, 2 night's work so far and less than a 1cm x 1cm amount done, but it's really good fun and I'm trying to some techniques I haven't really used before. I wanted to create some really high contrast on this mini with shadows and bright colours to really make him pop out of my army lines and make it clear, this dude's the man. Going again with my averland colour scheme I had to paint yellow. I used the same formula that I've used on my skeletons but highlighted a little white on the points to make it really shout out.

I need to re-blend some of the NMM parts. I'm new to the non metallic metal theory and it's a little harder on this tiny little mini, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with the progress. The detail on this miniature is exquisite.

The yellow is definitely more striking than before! Detailed model surely help with excercising that ;) The hue looks a little artificial, but that also works and it's indeed much more 3D. Very fine work with the NMM, I wish you luck and perseverance in trying that technique, it's certainly quite fresh here. Also, the whole mini looks very detailed and promising, I am waiting for further progress ;)

Virgil is coming along. I had to buy a new brush for some of the detail, but it did the trick. I can highly recommend Raphael brushes, really happy with the tips and the quality of the brush. They can load up with paint really well and hold water well too.

Anyway, some smoothing to do and a foot to finish. Final blending on the blades should remove the coffee-stained look. I haven't spent much time on the photography either as you can see from the background and the photos show up every defect in blending, even ones that eyes can't see with a magnifying glass! Never painted anything with this fine a detail, it's been lots of fun.

Basing will be next, he's on a 20mm square but I'm going to fit it into a round display base for the comp (shown in the photo but not finished). I'm also going to model some ghouls for his command group to interact with his presence.
