RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

Good progress so far, but a few improvements to make on the skull imo.

The reason it looks strange is that it is not anatomically correct.
1. The eyesockets are too small. With the size you have now you'd be perfectly fine if the skull had skin on it. The hole in the bone is far bigger than what you see of it on the outside.
2. A nose mostly consists of cartilage (<-sp?). That means that the hole in the skull is relatively flat with only the "root" standing out a bit. Also it is only one linked more or less triangular hole, not two separate.
3. You're right about the lower jaw, it starts far more up the skull. What I mean is that it is more attached to the side of the skull than to the bottom of it. Just look some pictures up on google.

Still a really good start, I personally am not brave enough to sculpt whole models from scratch. Very impressive.

Cheers,

Dogmar

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

i agree with what dogmars saying, i still think its very impressive but making it more anatomically correct will help the model look "right"
saying that i think your skull is extremely creepy looking which i like, so maybe incorporating the two would be cool!
after all its a giant not a human so their bone structure would/could differ slightly as their only humanoid not human

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

oke,... so how about if i do THIS!
aimg.photobucket.com_albums_v143_loempiaketzer_Warhammer_20Tomb_20Kings_BGheadwip.webp

Its at least a bit better with the jaw like this. He still needs some teeth though!

anyways. the head is allmost done. Now up to the next part! the lowerspine / bone i dont know what its called! (Hips or something!)
aimg.photobucket.com_albums_v143_loempiaketzer_Warhammer_20Tomb_20Kings_BGwiptorso.webp

dont mind the wire,... its there just to give it a bit more body and so i dont need gallons of green stuff for this guy.
Concentrating on the lower spine,... i think i did pretty well. has some awesome shapes in it. and looks very natural imho.
Concentrating on the hips... a lot less awesomeness happening there. I couldnt find any good pics on the internet. I tried to immitate the normal skeleton hips. But looking at them, they are not right either. Its just,. at that scale, they look allright( All in my humble opinion offcourse :P)
anyway. i have been trying really hard to get it right... but its impossible for me at the moment. Maybe, ill give him some kind of lioncloth or armor to hide this bone.
So, i marked it as WIP as it doesnt really look its part. And because the upperlegbones need some work so they fit snugly against the hips.

I think grumpy is getting along quite nice! (grumpy seems appropriate since he has no teeth :P)

please comment!

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

the jaw needs to be extended along the sides so it touches the upper part of the skull as they interlock into the skull and i still think they eye sockets should be slightly bigger
however this is just my opinion the sculpting it amazing non the less

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

I agree with veiled and I think the nose should be combined to one almost triangular hole, not completely triangular though, browse the interwebs for an appropriate pic.
The thing you noticed about the hips is the following: A real hip consists of two "wings" and connecting elements which altogether form a "ring". So the sculpting of out little skeletons is actually quite realistic. I agree though that this is very hard to put into practice.

Overall your sculpting is very impressive and I admittedly couldn't do it any better. Hopefully my suggestions help you to improve the model further.

I'm looking forward to seeing more progress on it.

Cheers,

Dogmar

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

Nice work on this guy, he's coming along great. I like the skull and him not having teeth, you could just put holes in for the sockets from where they're missing. Also I think the back of the pelvis is meant to be a bit higher than the front. Its interesting to see your progress, keep it up  And lets see some progress on the big smashy weapon!

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

well, sorry no updated giant, i ran out of GS to go for the chest.
I did however manage to craft the armorpieces im intending to use (square pieces of plasticard to mimic the original bonegiant armor)
I do have another update for you guys

aimg.photobucket.com_albums_v143_loempiaketzer_Warhammer_20Tomb_20Kings_IMGP1936.webp

Tom swarm! Since i only use 1... i thought this was a cool idea. Its based on the story of "the dude that gathers rats with his musical flute playing" i dont know the storyname in english... but you get the point i guess.
Only mine has a horn and a dead body with a little bit of flesh on it to feed his snakes instead of rats!

I dont know if i showed him yet... but my standard TK general
aimg.photobucket.com_albums_v143_loempiaketzer_Warhammer_20Tomb_20Kings_IMGP1934.webp

since i thought my bases were a bit dull, i thought... well... i still need some archers to get a block of 40 so i should better do some awesome basing on them to make the basing a bit more intresting. here you go
aimg.photobucket.com_albums_v143_loempiaketzer_Warhammer_20Tomb_20Kings_IMGP1931.webp

And the latest... my tomb prince. hes based on a celestial wizard.... i think hes pretty cool... and sorry for the crappy shot. He still needs some GS work on his great weapon...
aimg.photobucket.com_albums_v143_loempiaketzer_Warhammer_20Tomb_20Kings_IMGP1929.webp

So, hope you liked the update... C&C always welcome!

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

its a spearshaft with 2 sword/dagger pieces from the (TK) bowmen sprue.
and offcourse the 'army logo' on the other side. the flail ball that resembles the sun.

so,... easy converstion me thinks. but needs some neatening here and there! :P (if thats correct english)
cheers!

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

So ive been working on my only liche in the army.
aimg.photobucket.com_albums_v143_loempiaketzer_Warhammer_20Tomb_20Kings_lichepriestwip.webp

yellow is done. pretty satisfied with it. pictures dont do it justice. but its a deep yellow with very dark shades of brown. i like it.
the brown squares on her head need to be red, so still need to do that. as all the other cloth that is not painted yet. (it will be red, or gold depending on the occasion)
Also, the grey skin will need 1 or 2 extra layers for more highlighting and such.

The thing is...
I would like to get the lava thing underneath her feet to resemble some of it in her body.
my TK are sunworshippers. so a very hot liche priest should do the trick i guess. being a chosen of god she god sunny powers!

I was thinking of her eyes painted in lava, or some kind of tribal lava tattoo over her entire body. however, im pretty sure im going to F this up real bad. so i was going to stick with the eyes only.
i posted this to get some input on what to do with the lava on/inside her body. please let me know what you think!

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

Great lava effect! I think it looks very natural. Also I think the liche priestess is your best painted mini so far and it`s still a WIP - what do you think? The contrast makes the difference ;)

regards,
sea.man :konrad:

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

I wouldnt risk the large tattoo unless your totally confident. What about adding the glowing lava effect to the end of the staff or her eyes? nice work

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

I hereby present the completed liche priest. Im pretty satisfied with her. i dont think she needs more lava-effects....
aimg.photobucket.com_albums_v143_loempiaketzer_Warhammer_20Tomb_20Kings_IMGP1976.webp

I only need to re-do her name on her base since its a bit crappy painted on. but thats the least i could do for her.
enjoy!

I hope to get working on my Tomb king and tomb prince today. or maybe some more archers... it depends on the mood i got :)

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

hmmm,... dark as in goth-lips-dark?
or just a darker shade of grey?
or lava? Then the would have hot red lips. It would look more like a bad betty boop rip off then i guess...

how dark should they be?.... hmm,... this wiull be trial and error i guess....

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

since im trying to keep you guessing, a total random update on the skeleton archer banner bearer.
For those who are following the thread, i try ti minimise the skulls in the army. since they are sunworshippers.
However, there are certain priests/bannerbearers who will enslave my units to serve the god of the sun for eternity. To resemble this, there is a guy in my army, who in real life, had the sign of a skull on his banner, letting everyone know eternal servitude is taken litterally.

so there you go.
serve the master!!! never give up, never surrender!!!!!!

RE: Sons of the sun, a Tomb Kings Plog

aimg.photobucket.com_albums_v143_loempiaketzer_Warhammer_20Tomb_20Kings_IMGP1991.webp

Its just the right colour i want it to be. I still need to paint the rest of the model. so i thought i should take a picture and show it before i F it up with other paints...
so there you go. my pants im proud of.
