Here are some Rose Maidens ready for undercoating:

Lots of fiddly bits. I spent an hour just cutting out little paper leaves...

So far, the maidens are base coated and based. Will try and get some more paint on them while hiding from my family over the next couple of days!

Here is a little project I've been doing:

A first go with Nihilakh Oxide on what it is intended for! Not 100% sure I got the balance right, I think a bit less in places would be more effective.

I also used photo-etched brass ivy for the first time. Very fiddly and fragile, I don't think I'd buy any more but I'll use the few bits I've got left.

I think these are pretty much finished, a bit of tidying up of the bases, and perhaps a bit of Earthshade wash as they seem to have come out brighter than the first horde.

There are actually a couple left over (on the right hand side) because I couldn't get them all to rank up - in the end there are 28 models counting as 40, I think the other unit has 30 in the same space somehow!

That brings me closer to my eventual target of 2000 points of core, well past half way now (in points, not models).

What next?

Thanks! Yeah, I've not been too far away, mostly messing around with Warhammer Empire projects, and pretending to have a real life.

What's left to paint? Here's a rough list:

2 boxes of Mantic Skeletons
Regiment of converted Blood Knights, I'm a bit stuck on the conversions at the moment.
Vampire Lady on Dragon
At least a dozen other assorted necros and vamps
Garden of Morr and some other unit filler ideas
A bunch of big kits like zombie dragons and so on, not sure how these will fit in the army but (like the Skeleton Giant) this is my excuse to build and paint them.

Also I need to decide how to do my zombies, then do about 100 of them.

After that, the only units I don't have covered are the Mortis Engine and Crypt Horrors.

And there is a general lack of mounted characters - I'd like to do a mounted BSB option, and at least one Abyssal Horror and Hellsteed, maybe a mounted Necromancer.

Notice I am completely ignoring the End Times models and fluff. I'm hoping it will all be forgotten in a couple of years...

I'm really happy with the theme of the army, although I never did sit and write any fluff for it, but it the restrictions it places (mostly the female characters one) do massively reduce the pool of minis available to me.

Thanks. I don't have any ponies in it yet, sorry...

Here's another piece of scenery or unit filler:

Looks a bit crowded with the big Rose Maidens in there, but you see the idea - it can stand in a unit replacing four models and adding some drama to it. A nice easy conversion from the old Heroquest (?) part, just needed to hack the old base off and stand it on some carefully placed slotta bases instead. I have a second one, so might well repeat the idea, though that one might get some roses going up it, because, well, theme!

Here we go, 98% finished:

The missing 2% is some gore and puss like I added to the other two dragons, but there is no point in adding that BEFORE dullcoating, which will have to wait for less wintery weather.

It's a lot paler than the other two dragons. I decided to complete the trio by using the third shade of green Foundation paint (this is Gretchin Green) and the classic 90s Rotting Flesh zombie colour. The large amount of skin as opposed to scales on this model also makes the whole thing a lot paler. I threw a blue-green wash over the whole thing to try and pull the tone a little back towards the other two models.

This model comes with a rider, who looks more Chaos Warrior than Vampire or Necromancer to me, and is male anyway. I'll hang onto it for now, so a Vampire rider for this one isn't out of the question in the future.

As punishment for painting a fun model, I will now attempt to resurrect a Vampire BSB project which I had previously given up on. Going back to it with an attitude that anything I salvage is a bonus has a certain freedom to it.

They could maybe use an extra layer of highlights, it's a common criticism of my painting "style" / laziness!

I think this is pretty close to complete:

I'd be lying if I said I was 100% happy with her, but this model has been a complete bitch from the off. It arrived badly cast and badly twisted, and the metal tore when I tried to bend it straight. So the bottom half of the standard is rather crudely resculpted, and the orientation of the standard is probably not as intended. I also replaced the original right arm, and had to clean up the hair as best I could. It's spent a year or so discarded in my box of minis as a result.

This is the original, from the Resina Planet website

I might have been unlucky I guess. There is a lot of new stuff on their website (it's 3 years since I bought this model!) - I wouldn't advise against buying their stuff, just manage your expectations just in case of disappointment!

Awesome stuff! As far as your latest addition goes I agree with Undying Scourge, she could stand to be paler. You also did a great job on here eyes and face, I would paint her lips bright red to draw the eye in to that area.

Can you be more specific about "primitive highlighting" - I guess / hope you mean the bat on the standard. Good criticism helps me improve :)

Skin tone is about what I'm aiming for, I'm after aristocratic pale rather than undead.

Do you think painting her choker a dark colour would help with the face? My plan was to match it with the under skirt as a spot colour, but it sort of washes out.

By primitive I mean you've only done like one layer. You should do more layers and blend it in with the base colour. Also painting the choker a dark colour would definitely help. Also about her skin colour, it needs more contrast and depth, and you also have to remember that beauty for s vampire is just an illusion.

Definitely agree that your highlighting could use more depth. I'll compare your model to the studio model to illustrate what I'm meaning:

DRESS: both you and the studio artist went with a deep red for the cloth, working up from black shadows. However you've kept the shadows relatively minimal, and jumped straight into that deep red for most of the area. The studio artist has kept a good 40-50% of the model in shadows, in order to create a stronger contrast.

Moreover, if you look closely you can see that the studio painter has several additional layers of highlighting on the dress that add a lot more depth. Ontop of the breasts, the stomach, the very upper edges of the folds of cloth, are all blended up to several shades lighter than your red.

The end result is that yours ends up looking slightly muddy, while the studio effort looks more vibrant, even though less of their model is actually *red*.

SKIN: the colours you've used are warmer, standard flesh tones. The result is skin that looks living, unlike the bloodless vampire look in the picture. They've used more greyish tones to create that "bloodless, pallid flesh" look.

HAIR: the trick to painting black hair isn't black...it's white. The trick is to highlight the hair with areas of "shine" to really make it pop. For example, take http://s629.photobucket.com/user/asharimrai/media/minis/perdita4.jpg.html. Your brain tells you clearly that the hair is black, but much of what you *actually* see is white and grey. The "shine."

GENERAL: To just give some general tips, I think your biggest issue is that you're choosing highlight colours too close together. When highlighting your goal is to create a sense of depth, and when you choose colours a few tones apart you don't really get that effect. The trick is to instead choose highlights that are quire some distance apart to create an exaggerated contrast. Again, you can see this in the studio mini, how they've gone from an almost-black to an almost-white with highlights on the dress. The black banner is more grey than black. Etc.

EDIT: Saw an article on BOLS that was on-point for some of my advice. Check it out HERE. It's a step-by-step for free-handing, but the techniques are just as applicable to general painting. Namely how to build up highlights and contrast in order to create a desired effect, one step at a time.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to put that advice together, lots to think about there.

For this mini, I'm going to call it done for now and move on. I stalled on this army project last year because of fussing over individual models and I want to avoid that. I need to stay focused on the need to paint 200+ models! I can always come back and rework individual models and units at a later date.

So, this is my prototype for female Blood Knights

Mostly High Elf and Dark Elf parts. I've struggled to find suitable heads, I'm going with this unhelmeted look, it's either that or gender-neutral closed helmets (which would make easier painting!)

Latest badly daubed lady miniature:

If you are really sharp, you will remember seeing the base before amongst my spirit hosts, with a GW ghost stood in the spot now inhabited by the Wraith Queen.

No one seems to hate my Blood Knight concept, so I'm making a unit of 10 right now.

Cheers! Her skin looks a little paler here on my desk, I'm still not comfortable going to white for highlights. I think you need to do it so well to get it to look right.

I've run into a problem with the blood knights - the female torso I used is from the old Dark Elf Warrior box, and is now OOP! Struggling to get any more. It's the only universal female armoured torso that I've ever found, I should have bought a few dozen when I had chance.

Here are my first five Blood Knights, all ready apart from shields and deciding what standard will go on the pole!

I've ordered more parts, I should be able to make 10 or 12 of these, and perhaps add some mounted characters.

To get four more of the torsos I had to buy a whole OOP Dark Elf regiment box, lucky to get one cheap. Hopefully it'll re-sell on ebay.

Now I just have to get these ladies painted.
