Tomb Kings are officially going out

  • The masquerade of murder returns! A new game of Vampires Amongst Us has begun. Unmask the killers, trust no one, and try to survive the night. Find out more and sign up now!
I don't know if that's a good forum to post that, but I think it regards the old WFB more than the AoS.

All of the Tomb Kings range is in the "Last Chance to Buy" section. Not just the old ones as it is with chaos, all of it. Even the new stuff like Necropolis Knights and Necrosphinx. I thought that with kinda egyptian looking Nagash GW would shift the whole undead range into such an aesthetic, but instead they are actually canning the whole range. And not even trying to hide it like they did usually.

And to make things even more interesting, all the older character models are renamed into generic versions - there is no Vlad, Konrad and Mannfred, just Vampire Lords.

I was quite mad with the shifting of the setting earlier, but this is much worse. At least earlier we still got the old minis as the representatives of WFB, now all of it will be replaced with new, over the top minis and sigmarines.

For us at CN least, the VC range stays, but I feel for everyone collecting the other kind of undead, especially those that actually changed into AoS and hoped they'll recieve some support.

Well, I know locally our GW has picked up sales in a big way in last 45 days. Saying they have started selling AoS at a pace 5:1 compared to even 40k and at almost double that compared to old WFB. So hopefully that will start to reach outwards and get more people playing.

Our local GW was closed. We were told repeatedly that they were moving to a new location locally, as was the new manager who had only just taken over the store, and was supposed to stay on as manager at the new location.

That new location never appeared. As far as I know, they never told the guy who was supposed to run it what happened, and just stopped answering his calls.

Wow, that's nuts. I have heard of Ghosting but never to fire someone lol.

I was pretty hopeful with the reports from my local GW that it was going to finally take off. When my brother convinced me to play I went out and all I saw were negative reviews from ~6mo ago.

But watching Battle Reports and then going down with him on weekends the game looked like tons of strat/tactics were still needed and looked fun so ultimately decided to play.

Although it sucks that the TK stuff is going away, it doesn't surprise me about the vamp. Renames. That's all they were before the VC/TK split. It is my hope that this is a set up for new stuff coming in the future.

My TK friends couldn't care less. There are SO many other companies making excellent models and this army is no different. 9th doens't care what models you use, neither does KoW.

Of course they could just be crying on the inside, but then I've been doing that ever since End Times so hey.

Death of WHFB is the best thing to happen to the hobby. KoW and 9th are both excellent games that are much more deserving of my time and money. It's so nice to play a game where no-one is raving about comp this and comp that.

I'm sure it's a fine game if you like that sort of thing, it's just not my kind of game.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't mean to devolve the thread into and AoS bash... shame about the TK models in the end, lots of good quality models will be missed.

I know I am in the minority but I don't see any issue with AoS...
As mad as I am at some of the business decisions GW has made recently I find the AoS rules much more fun than 9A or KOW. The order of the phases, command abilities, the tactical choices for which unit to pile in with first, unique spells, etc very enjoyable.
I'm going to just keep using my old tomb kings until such time as the rules change to the degree that their old PDF doesn't work anymore.

Yea, even while furious at the GAoD changes and dumbfounded as to why we got a GA before a tome and no new units to replace etc etc I still feel that AoS is very solid and that those that go into it looking to find problems end up creating them moreso than they were there.

Also those that don't play the scenarios and think it is just a line up BNs vs BNs like 8 was are getting stuck and not realizing that the way to play has changed as well.

Lets keep on on topic guys.

I'll contribute links to the alternative models for Tomb Kings, composed by the 9th Age team.

http://www.the-ninth-age.com/index.php?thread/630-models-for-the-entombed-dynasties/&pageNo=1

I think the content overlaps quite a lot with that of the Tomb Kings forum, but there might be some other stuff in there.

Also, just because GW stops making the models doesn’t mean it will be impossible to get a hold of them. There is a big after market for warhammer and a lot of what's sold is in mint condition. I doubt the Tomb King models with be any exception so they'll probably be available for many years to come, if you just take the effort to look for them. I've collected a 5-6th edition Empire models enough for an army that way recently, without too much hassle.

Same, I have picked up ~80 or so packages off eBay that included lots of 5th/6th edition Bret/Empire. Right now on reddit we are seeing TK go up in price but I imagine that it will all settle down and be easily picked up.

The only downside I see to that line of thought is that TK didn't do well in past on sales so not sure how much will be avlb, vs Empire etc sold a TON in those editions.

Yeah for sure, I still keep an eye on eBay for Dogs of War, as I absolutely love the miniatures but you can't get them any more. Just dropped 200 AUD on DoW from eBay, which is probably around about their price when new from GW for what I got.

I mean who can argue with a Moe like this:

I see Nefertiti is getting a new army list, so some things are moving forward at least. TK sold best right after the split. VC sucked for several years while they got all the toys we use to have, ( archers, chariot, mummy's etc.) but then I know it slowed up quite abit. I still for see the new AOS stuff being based off the old WHFB armies type layout. Death will be a mixing pot of all the basic stuff just without the separate army tags.

I'll believe it when I see it in production. And maybe buy some of it, if the prices are decent, and if it's a close enough in proportion to the VC skeleton - which is the main reason why I didn't buy any old TK stuff, and, I suspect, the reason why even recent and relatively well received TK plastics like the sphynx weren't rolled into the GAD book.

Honestly, there are a number of decent skelton model options out there. I'd be more interested in a suitably impressive skull catapult (mantic's model is tiny and boring) and maybe a set of ushabti w/ options for bows and great weapons (maybe a single model, but with different animal heads and weapon arms to choose from?)

Anyway, yeah, I'm interested in 3rd party TK type stuff in general, but am not going to get excited about anything until it's a physical product.

I second @Malisteen 's opinion. It's easy to design something in 3D, producing it is something entirely different. One can easily see elements on this model that will be way too filmsy for something substantial, especially when cast in something else than expensive plastic. Either way, I'll greet new undead minis with open arms ;)
