Is this remotely doable? I really like the idea to be honest. Ghouls with a 5+ regen save. I've made a couple lists revolving around this strategy. You place a horde of ghouls down and stick a mortis engine on either side. You can then place whatever you want on the outside. I have looked at running units of crypt horrors on the outside.

Basically you have the ghouls who lock units into combat hopefully indefinitely. The ghouls shred through unarmored units especially if you take the staff of damnation with them. For armored stuff you have the 2 mortis engines using their reliquary ability and their banshee scream. A combat vamp in the unit of ghouls will help too. A vampire lord with the seed of rebirth is super great for this roll. Also for armored units you can take a bsb with the razor standard if desired.

I just want your input on whether you think this is viable. I'm loving the sound of it but I'm not quite certain. Thoughts?

RE: Two Mortis Engines and a Horde og Ghouls

Apologies for the typo in the title. I didn't catch it till it was too late.

RE: Two Mortis Engines and a Horde og Ghouls

I'm pretty sure you can edit the title if you do a Full Edit on your post. I could be wrong, though.

As far as the strategy itself, I think it's a solid base for an army - Ghouls in the middle, Mortis Engines and Crypt Horrors on the sides protecting them, and the nastiest Ghoul King points can buy right in the middle. I don't know how much Screaming you can afford once you've bought all that, though.

Anything Flaming will be a concern for any unit that doesn't have the Ghoul King, but Crypt Horrors will still hold up reasonably well against most things thanks to T5.

Hey what do you know. You can edit it!

I hadn't considered using grave guard. That's a good point. I thought about running ghouls since you have to get core. There's no way around it. Plus ghouls have 1 more attack than grave guard. Although grave guard would stand up a lot better than the ghouls would. I'll think about it.

I tend to run a vamp lord rather than a ghoul king because I can make him level 4 and skip having to get a master necromancer. But maybe I'll try coming up with a list that uses a ghoul king and a master necromancer instead of the hybrid vamp lord.

The screaming was from the 2 mortis engines. it's not a whole lot but it's something. I still haven't used the rod of flaming death in any of my lists. I think I might try it out here soon. Whenever I can get another game in that is. I've been pretty busy lately.

They do but thats for your min core.
I would prefer strength 4 killing blow and armour to poison and 5+ regen.
Myself I would take a horde of both, sure ghouls get more attacks but load the GG up on GW and laugh, thats your heavy hitters right there at strength 6 and you can still take some horrors.

With this in mind, make sure to make the most out of combat reform. Take a charge with the ghouls containing the lord, fight a round of combat. At the end of combat, reform so that you are as wide as your opponents unit. In your turn, charge both engines into combat (corner to corner to minimise attacks on them!). This will give you heaps of impact hits, spirit host damage, two screams and the aura effect! Not much that can stand up to that. :vampire3:

That would be taking models out of combat so you can't do it assuming you were wider than your opponent in the first place.

Interesting that no one has mentioned that Ghouls can't get a 5+ regen, though. They don't have any regen save so a Mortis Engine gives them 6+. For this 6+ to be improved to 5+ by the second Engine, the effect of the second engine would have to be applied after the effect of the first - but it isn't, it happens at the same time - when they have no regen save.

I hope I'm wrong, but can't see how I can be.

Lucky you can hope really... If 2 things happen at the same time whoever's turn it is (you) get to choose what order you do things in. So your Ghouls can get 5+ regeneration, luckily. :)

Good point. Best to be as wide as the opposing unit in the first place. This way you can do this on the charge aswell xD.

Doesn't it state that it stacks with other Engines?

By my understanding, you can get 5+ Regen. You choose order of operations during your turn, so one Engine gives you the 6+ save, and then the other adds to it.

The aura applies a special rule to units that lasts until your next turn. It's not an effect you get by only staying close and doing nothing. The rule requires resolution and for you to do things ad you can only do one ay a time. Same as combats, they happen in the same phase, but you still only do one at a time. Thus, we always do our bsb's combat last (when it's our choice) so we get the rerolls in case he dies. You get get the effect, engine can even die somehow and you still have the regen rule till next turn. You resolve things one at a time so you pick the first engine, dole out the regen rule to units in range that don't have it. They now have that rule. Start resolving the second engine and it increases any regen rule in range.

It's all in the wording. Nothing suggests they are happening simultaneously and even if they did, the sequencing rule would kick in and you pick the order of application.

A little off topic, but if my opponent has first turn and puts a grudge thrower shell into my lines, do I get a regen save from the mortis engine? I'm pretty sure the wording says on the beginning of my turn the regen save takes effect. But since I haven't had a turn do I get the save?

Thanks
