Maybe you are older in the hobby, I started in fourth edition, my first army book was Undead. When I said I preferred the old divisions, I perhaps was a bit vague. I meant more a good guys/bad guys division. Putting the two books into one doesn't really bother me.

Ah, I apologize for misunderstanding you, then. It seems we're of about similar age in the hobby, then, as that is the edition & faction that I started with as well.

As for the 'good guy / bad guy' split, well, I actually don't mind that that's eroded somewhat over time. I like that the Brettonian Knights are noble and honorable, but at the same time their peasantry suffer beneath their notice, or that the Empire is fractious, many of its people oppressed, and that witch hunters slay the innocent along with the guilty. I like that even the good guys aren't exactly 'good' all the time.

In terms of other factions using undead, I don't mind so much. I mean, it's just for the campaign, in a world flooded with Necromantic magic by Nagash's return. For another, players aren't required to use it if they don't want to. And finally, how many times through the years have we seen converted theme armies of 'high elf undead' or 'dark elf undead' or 'brettonian undead'? If the campaign rules allow, even temporarily, for such lists to actually blend units from undead factions and the faction in question, I'd find that pretty cool. I mean, an empire list with some necromantic spellcasting plus maybe some undead allies if that also is allowed would be a great representation for Sylvanian levy, would it not?

For the fluff changes, the major ones I'm aware of right now are the 180 on Mannfred's motivations, going from opposing Nagash to willingly serving him, and Nagash requiring some kind of ritual to fully revive, both of which we've had at least a couple years to adjust to at this point, and while I can understand not liking those changes, I myself have adjusted. Seeing Mannfred active everywhere, seeing him have a direct goal to work towards, eventually won me over. He just feels like a more active, dynamic, and important character this way, IMO.

As for the Vlad discussions, I still don't believe the source, because everything direct from GW has revolved around Mannfred. Maybe Vlad will turn out to be back, but then wouldn't it be Vlad in the mortarch box with Arkhan and Nefarata? Again, We'll see, but I just don't buy it at all. And personally, I think it would be a mistake if true (not a major one or something that would stop me from enjoying the campaign), as Vlad's story was well concluded already, imo.

I am still hoping we'll have more of the mortarchs named. I've got my fingers crossed for Zaccharias (or a restored Melchior), Kemmler, and Krell, but even if I get all three from my wish list, that still leaves three slots open if they're going for nine. Or two I guess, if Vlad is really back.

Each race is unique, with different strengths and weaknesses, and that's part of the beauty of the game. The challenge of being a dwarf player is to overcome your lack of magic and speed, for elves how to overcome your basic lack of toughness and armour, etc. etc. The gaps in your armoury, now you can just fill in with troops from other forces.

Dwarves don't have wizards to cast Undeath with even if every wizard does have access to it. More broadly, this is a campaign event, you're not going to have random opponents bringing such things to tournaments or to pick up games without prior consent. As for myself, yes, I could easily see the wizards of 'good' factions, Lizardmen and High Elves in particular, leveraging the glut of necromantic energy in the winds of magic to turn the undead legions ravaging the world against each other.

Plus I can get way more toys for the same outlay from others and that's what I do these days.

You'll hear no defense of GW's pricing structure from me. And while the production quality is top notch - far above others in the industry - the design choices and style of GW products of late is getting increasingly distinctive, and if you don't like that style, then I can't fault you for not liking the models.

I do object to the accusation that GW models have been getting more generic or losing the warhammer feel or style. To the contrary, IMO they've been getting far more distinctively warhammery of late, which some like and some obviously don't. 15 years ago, there wasn't too much distinguishing GW skeletons, zombies, wraiths, or vampires from models you'd find in other lines. Recent warhammer releases are much more immediately recognizable as such.

honestly you can get a full undead army from Mantic for $75, around 1k points. Nagash is going to cost even more then that, and he is one character. I can't see it.

I agree that GW's models are becoming much more distinctive as they're developing a certain style and certainly the best out there, but you cannot say they are becoming more "Warhammery" if the original models were generic - that's the complete opposite.

Can't argue the cost on mantic, but the quality on most of their stuff doesn't quite cut it, imo. The zombies & ghouls are fine, but the skeletons, wights, and characters just do not work for me.

That's just me, though. For those that do like them, it's a blatantly superior path, financially speaking.

As for Nagash, yeah he's painfully overpriced. No question, no argument. But it's Nagash. I've been waiting 15 years for Nagash, and here is is with a model and a rule set that look exactly how I would have wished them to look. I can understand those who don't like the style, I can see what they don't like about him, but a lot of that is exactly why I love him, ridiculous hat included.

So while he's at least twice the price he should be, I'm going to be buying him anyway.

I am hoping that the next time we see Nagash in 30 years he will have another "flaw" with his head :P

He went from being "evil giant-head clown" to "pope tiny skull".

It's the curse of Nagash people!

As for the lore I hope it has other fun stuff than just raising zombies. I hope it has things like: Unit turns etherial for one round, unit makes a etherial move for x". etc. Since it has a points system I do hope there is some variety. Maybe a more expensive spell with something big.

I do agree with the folks that dislike other armies being able to do "our thing". Thats kind of why I hope there are other things in the lore than just raising stuff.

Well I am unhappy with the return of Nagash. Not for the reasons you might think (great model and it's about to get real) I just hate Nagash (and yes I do play VC). In all honesty I don't think all vampires will be happy with his return.

Just a theory on the side this might be a step to merge the VC and TK because from what I recall of reading it today Nagash went over that way. I am probably completely wrong in that regard but still.

There was discussion earlier in the thread about the size of games that Nagash could be fielded in given his points costs. There are rumours that the Lords allowance is being changed to 50%, which would allow Nagash to be fielded in 2000pt games. And Lore of Undeath apparently works like Demonology in 40K.

If the re-merge happens I will be one happy Vamp. my first real experience was 4th ed undead.

I personally wouldn't mind a re-merge, but I don't think it will happen.

That said, if Fantasy is doing just terrible, I suppose consolidated books are possible. What might be consolidated apart from undead?

Chaos Mortals, Beasts, and Daemons, obviously. Wood Elves plus Brettonians? Empire plus Dwarves? High elves plus Dark Elves wouldn't exist in the same army, but their lists share enough overlap that I could see an 'Elven kingdoms' sort of book with a unified list, plus variant equipment and rules differentiating high from dark lists.

The problem with all of that is that it consolidates books, but not model lines, and model lines are where the cost is.

The vamp and TK model lines seem too distinct to me already. They've sunk too much money into molds for vargheists and terrorgheists and grave guard on the one hand, and sphinxes and chariots to and tomb guard on the other ditch them, but they don't really work in a unified faction.

So as much as I miss the old undead, as much as i'd love to see their return extend beyond the duration of this campaign, I really just don't see it happening.

Nothing else except chaos could be merged. the possible exception is a "human kingdoms" list with rules for bretonnians, empire, border princes, Telia, etc.

i remember a large amount of sphinxes popping up when they were released. I'm of the opinion they have made back or written off the costs of the newer kits.

True but I would like to think that GW has some degree of pre-planning and that the Elf races would have been a great case to try it out on - so many of the special rules are similar in theme and even the same that I can't believe they plan to do this and wouldn't do it at that point.

I doubt that. In the latest financial report Preamble, Tom Kirby said GW does no market research. If there is no market research, pre-planning armies for successive releases seems unlikely.

I think we're getting distracted, here. @Yorga said that there are pics of the new lore, but has yet to tell us...

My thoughts exactly, I have been keeping up to date on Warseer, Dakka, BoLS and here and I have seen nothing of said magic deck anywhere... Please share the source so we can all benefit from your benevolence

Every time I hear someone talk about the way GW runs their business I am baffled they still exist...

@Yorga Need my fix maaan, give us some pictures or some info on the lore of undeath! Pretty please!

Sorry guys. This site http://grotorderly.blogspot.nl/2014/08/white-dwarf-30-wycieki-leaks.html had it up but looks like GW Legal got to them. You will all get the chance to see it in a soon to be released WD Weekly. The only thing the picture said is that the lore is usable by every wizard in the game. It did NOT give the actual spells.

One more rumor I read but did not see a picture of is that Lord allotment is being raised to 50%. Not sure if this is a campaign only rule or for all of WHFB. Likely the former. Since Nagash comes in at a whopping 1000 points I assume they had to do this for the campaign. I mean who plays 4000 point games? :o

No one, they take way too long.

Furthermore, soon to be released is ten days away :(

Has there been any info on if the mounted Vampires/Arkhan can be assembled on foot for those that aren't used on the mount? (assuming that its a multi-kit)
