So i am taking a master necromancer as my lord choice and think i should take a combat based hero level vampire. My only restriction at the moment is they have to be under 180 points

Do you have any suggestions?

At 180 points will be hard to give it all the punch and survival you'd expect from a Vampire Hero.
Usually, I'd slap him with an Armour of Destiny and Red Fury, but this takes it 25 points beyond the points limit you gave.

So, as a combat hero, looking at longevity, I'd say give him heavy armour and Talisman of Preservation, along with an enchanted shield, this gives you an option to add any power below or equal to 20 points to him.
Dread Knight could be worthwhile, but you don't really want him stuck against a unit champion (or maybe you do) or you could give him Summon Creatures of the Night if you're running a couple of beasts.
Fear incarnate could be hilarious, but beguile is generally the better option if you ask me, but that's just personal preference.
Don't bother with Master Strike, it's not really worth it in my opinion.

Any combination of the powers will net you a maximum of 179 points, if you pick Beguile, you'd be at 174 points for your Hero.
Also, with a 3+ Armour save and a 4+ ward save, he'd be pretty tough to take down, but then again, for less points, you could just skip on the vampire and go for a Wight King with the same Magic Items and put this Vampire to shame. ;)

With the same item selection, you'd be at 135 points, only 1 attack less, but have killing blow on all attacks, which makes him a considerably better choice for handling most challenges, since he also has a higher toughness.

Thank you, some good food for thought. I only ask this because my Level 4 is my only caster and a vamp will help i thought

My hero vampires generally start out with either of these kits.

Heavy armour + enchanted shield.

or

Heavy armour + shield + dragonhelm.

I find a 3+ armour save and a parry save to be sufficient for them. You can give them useful arcane items (dispel scroll, book of arkhan) aside from this, which is their biggest plus over wight kings in my opinion. That and they can throw out additional IoNs for you.

Edit: I rarely take even a single vampire power for them. The cost just begins to soar when you do. Beguile probably wouldn't be a bad call though.

No problem. n.n

If you're looking for a back-up caster then a Vampire will serve you better than a vanilla Necromancer and a wight king, since he can combine both combat and being a back-up caster.
This in turn will make him more cost effective, but also a tad bit more vulnerable than a Wight King.

Having a vampire around is never a bad idea if you want a certain unit carrying some extra "oomph" into battle. :)

Thats the plan

I'm not sure what you mean with Avatar of Death (that's from the previous army book)? Heavy armour?

Avatar of Death is... from last edition's Army book D:!

That aside, I believe ASF is essential for him to mini-blend. Be it with Red Fury + Sword of swift slaying or just Sword of Might/ogre Blade + Quickblood.

Yep, Enchanted Shield + Sword of Might + Quickblood is all he needs to perform well in combat. Barded Nightmare would be also nice!

Well you could have a level 3 master necro with staff of sorcery to make him equivilant level 4 for dispell and be able to afford a fully tooled up mini blender?

What would you call a mini blender?

A min blender is a hero level vamp with the red fury power, sometimes these will have ASF but will tend to be squishy.

Personally I would take:

Vampire
Quick Blood
Heavy Armour
Enchanted Shield
Sword of Might
Luckstone

Comes in at 169 points.
Not the best build ever but given the points restrictions he will rarely miss, has ASF, is strength 6 and has a 3+ armour which he can reroll.
If you want a reliable character at these points however I would advise a wight king.

Wight King
Fencers Blades
Dragon Helm
Luck Stone

That gives you a WK with WS 10, 4+ armour which he can reroll once, 3 wounds, toughness 5, will only be strength 4 but he has 4 attacks the same as the vampire with Killing Blow.

Also he is only 135 Points so is allot cheaper as well.

I need a back up caster because my only caster and general is my Master Necromancer. Thank you for the builds really useful

Vampire
Lvl. 1 (LotV)
HW & AHW
Quickblood
Beguile
Glittering Scales
Dragonbane Gem

Clocks in at roughly 180 pts. (plus the second handweapon), personal favourite of mine.

lvl 1 LoV or Lore of Shadows
HA, Sh, Dragonhelm, Seed of Rebirth, quickblood, beguile.

He survives pretty nicely. Especially if you have a ME nearby.
