Well apparently Drachenfels is one of Nagash's Mortarchs now.

Also I am really hoping that Nagash does win and does cleanse the world of all life. That to me is the perfect ending for the Warhammer story. Everyone in Warhammer is a scumbag to some greater or lesser degree, all of them are villains, from the High Elves to the Bretonnians, from the Dark Elves to the Vampires - everyone's bad. The only true hero in the sea of crap is Nagash - he's going to save the world from Chaos and, more importantly, from itself - from life.

Every story has to end, and what better way to end it than some Ragnarok style finale, with Death reigning triumphant over all?

The reason I think Nagash will die is because whilst I agree that the end times is not a campaign it does have to end story wise.
I am confident the new rules and undead legion will remain into ninth edition the end times story must end. I can't imagine it carrying on with same battles being fought again and again.
And if Nagash doesn't die at the conclusion of the end times story then what is next for him. He is too powerful to be left around and I don't think retirement suits him

I think it makes sense to do a sort of Frozen Throne resolution to Nagash. That way he sticks around, remains that terrible undead source, and also allows undead legions to continue (including the rules like combined armies and no crumble when general dies, etc.)

EDIT: I think ultimately if they resolve the plot entirely, that will foretell a retcon like with Storm of Magic. One of the driving metaplots of Warhammer Fantasy is this sense of impending doom with the forces of chaos preparing to invade and destroy mankind. It's part of what gives Warhammer character, and depth to the different factions. It gives reason for war beyond blatant imperialism.

How about this: Nagash actually succeeds in combating Chaos and pushing it back for now. He then ascends to become the new Death God in the WFB world. It squares away a lot of loose ends and allows WFB to continue with some interesting changes i.e. undead legions, lore of undeath, changes to death magic, etc.

How about this: Nagash musters the greatest armies of undead ever seen. He gathers his closest and most powerful sorcerors imbueing them with immense power and divides his super-undead warrirors into twenty legions. He creates or promotes 20 vampires/ ghouls/ tomb kings and grants them riotous power to be his generals and sends them forth to conquer the world.

Except, mishap strikes: Upon hearing of his plan, the powers of chaos, desperate to stop their arch nemesis and the only one with the power to truly end them, manage to create some kind of dimensional storm or warp anomaly, scattering his generals while they are still being perfected.

Nagash sets out on a crusade to find his scattered 'children', becoming reunited with them one by one and finding each changed by the circumstances they found themselves in.

After a while, he hands control of his armies to Warmaster Arkhan, and retires to Nagashizzar to work on some unknown creation of immense and arcane power.

On the brink of victory, the other forces of the old world all but broken before the undead, Arkhan betrays Nagash, claiming dominion of the undead for himself and convincing fully half of the super-undead legions to rebel with him. A bitter civil war of the undead follows.

Nagash remains under Nagashizzar, working on his creation.

In the final showdown, the forces of Arkhan reach Nagashizzar and Nagash Faces Arkhan, now a twisted parody of his old self, but is unable to kill his former friend and ally, and perhaps the only one in the entire old world Nagash might come close to calling an equal.

The two fight and although Nagash eventually destroys Arkhan, in his final moments Arkhan curses Nagash, forcing him to spend the rest of eternity bound to the device he was working on beneath Nagashizzar, the Throne of Bone, which was the key to finally sealing the forces of Chaos away forever.

Weakened to the point of un-undeath, kept undead only by the arcane energies of the throne, Nagash becomes ruler of a crumbling undead empire, beset upon on all sides by the living and the damned, twisted races long thought crushed coming to the fore to feed upon the dying empire of the undead.

And so it is for ten thousand years, the corpse emperor silent upon his throne, the great empire of the undead desperately clinging to it's former glory but losing ground day by day.

In the grim far future of the old world, there is only war.

The only living being with enough raw magical power to take on Nagash would be Mazdamundi (2nd generation slann) but will never happen due to the great distance between the two. That said Nagash is bound to the wind of death so taking him out has become significantly more difficult. The only other way that comes to mind (given the relative strength of each faction) is to send a Deathmaster after Nagash to down him when he's weakened or just give the Fellblade to a non-skaven hero the same way they did last time they successfully killed him.

Archeon is unlikely to have an actual final showdown with Nagash unless it would result in a kind of draw or stalemate. More likely they'll have the Chaos incursion fragment (in the usual Fail-baddon way) before everything comes to a head, returning everything to the status quo albeit with a lot more dead characters.

Now that I think about it, Settra (if the books are to be an indication) could be a potential matchup against Nagash after being resurrected by the Chaos Gods to rule yet again, but most likely will be another smackdown with Nagash wiping him off the face of the planet for good (maybe weakening Nagash in the process, leaving him open to the coup de grace?).

Given that all the gods are now being transferred into mortals by Teclis I can see Nagash and these others ascending at some point and leaving the WFB world to fight chaos in the godly realm.

Nagash seems to be of the mind set that he can take on the chaos Gods single handed. Personally I think he's a genius for coming to this conclusion and agree they need sorting out.
So with super Franz and the others to help surely the chaos Gods are going to have a rough time after interfering so much. Maybe one of them might even get killed off?!
The Fell Blade no longer exists nor does the destroyer of eternities and I'm led to believe Tyrion dies, so the sword of Khaine is about but nobody else is stupid enough to wield it.
