Hello vampires! I am going to start a new army, with skaven and lizardmen in my backpack, and i really love how the models for the VC look (except for the zombies haha) and I want to know some more reasons why VC is awesome! Thanks a bunch!

BLEEH! BLEEEH! <- totally vampire sounds :Vampire1:

Insane characters, ethereal, the terrorgheist, CH's, hexwraiths, vargheists, raising and healing, easy access to lore of death. ME's.

But we have zombies, ZOMBIES!! Nothing beats that :zombie3: (okay in game everybody beats zombies, but still)

Did i mention the INSANE characters?

Well, is it plausible to have a VC army without zombies?
I know the can raise more zombies then they started with, and that seems hilarious to me, but is it possible? :>

Oh it's very possible to play without them, but they work very well with the army .... as meat shields ...

Did you ever think of another companies zombies?? Maybe mantic?? They're cheap and look a ton better.

AH YES actually i have bin looking at mantic for some time, and i really like their zombies, and ghouls (although i prefer GWs ghouls)

And also, what do you guys prefer, Vargheists or crypt horrors? I'm thinking of rolling with both, but which one should i start with? or is one so much better then the other i should just concentrate on 6 of those guys? :konrad:

vamplord, lvl 4
bsb vamp on foot, lvl1, scroll
40 ghouls
2x9 horrors
2x5-6 ethereal cav
3x9 direwolves with champs
mortis engine with tome

well Crypt Horrors are a big staple in most lists but Vargheists are good to. I would start with Crypt Horrors though. And 8 of them are the best! Just food for thought!

My good sir. This armylist sounds like a shit ton of fun. I will build this armylist.

Well crypt horrors do seem more forgiving also, while vargheists are glasscanons

Well they have very different jobs. Crypt horrors are great at stopping a unit from moving for the whole game where Vargheists are great for Warmachine, Small units, Chaff, and sniping abilities.

You should start vampire counts because they are vampires and they are awesome......:) but on a serious note they have a lot of variety to offer that I haven't seen much in other armies. A lot of different types of units that are used more than just one way. Other armies I have found a certain list and stuck to it because it worked and I couldn't think of much else I wanted to play, but with vampires I haven't stuck with the same list for two years now because of the variety.

I love how you can build such a different army largely based on rare choice selected. An army based on mortis engines will play differently to one built around tg or blood knights.

The best way is to choose the models you like and go from there.

Some very specific and classic traits of the Vampire Counts are:

- No shooting. At all. Even less than the chaos warriors (they have javelins and axe throwers with the barbarians, and the HELLCANNON). The only thing alike are the screams, and they are a very "special" thing, thou are made in the shooting phase. But they are powerful. In my opinion, the most powerful attack in the game (it "breaks" most of the barriers to wound an enemy, just eliminates the classic hit -> wound -> save system of warhammer)

- Very weak troops. Apart from a few ones (crypt horrors and maybe black knights for defense, varghulfs and blood knights for attack), the rest are pure garbage. BUT thay can como back!!! And if you go heavy with Vampire Lore (level 4 and level 2, for example), they return easily and in great numbers.

- Ghosts. Ethereal units are crazy. The "no magical attacks => you can´t even hit me" is, if you abuse, simply broken. For example: 4 heroes (banshees and wraiths), 2 hosts, 2 units of hexwraiths and a rare wraith unit, and some armies just CAN NOT afford that. ¡And it isn´t even the maximum you can take on a typical 2500 points battle!

- Characters. They are good sorcerers, you have two options for level 4: the vampire lord and the master necromancer, both with access to two very good lores: the own vampire lore, and death, who doesn´t need anything to say.
BUT the better of all are the fighter ones: the amount of carnage a vampire lord/strigoi ghoul king (well kitted for combat, of course) can make is just insane. Absurd, if you prefer. It isn´t comparable to any ona you have ever played with your other two armies (oldbloods and scarvets are incredibly resilient, i know, but they can´t just dream to KILLLLL like a vampire).

One of the key things with Vampires is the army is extremely reliable. It is not going disappoint you and do something completely unpredicted. Just keep your general alive of course.
You can definitely play without zombies. Skeletons are cheep too and if playing with a Master of the Dead necromancer, you can boost your units considerably. Skeletons actually do have a chance to perform OK, if the enemy fail their fear check, so don't hesitate to drop zombies for skeletons if that is what you like.

Ghouls are great too of course!

I also would like to mention that on the hobby side, vampires take the cake.

Deciding between Brets or Vamps? Do a Mousaline(sp) army and you have both!

Deciding between Empire and Vamps? The conversion possibilities are endless!!

Deciding between Ogres and vamps? Ogre models can be used for Crypt horrors and Zombie unit filler and look awesome doing it!

Deciding between WoC and Vamps? Krell, and his host would make a super sweet themed army!

Deciding between Skaven and Vamps? Plague Monks are awesome ghouls and Rat Ogres will make nice Crypt Horrors! Then you have things to play with (The Plague Furnace, HPA)

So there ya have it, most other armies can fit right in there (Dwarfs, Tomb Kings, Elves, Beasts, Deamons would be tough but not impossible). Then look at the possibilities in the army itself! Don't like something? don't take it then! You have 5 main bloodlines that you can run with for themes also(Lahmians, Nechrac, Von Carstien, Blood Dragons, and Stigoi), not counting random ones if you don't like any of those. Possibilities are endless!

Why should you play vampires? Well, with a name like Count Walheim, I'm not sure you have a lot of other options.

Like others have mentioned, VC are just really well rounded unless you're really really into the shooting phase, and we have the bestest mini's.

I'm not a big fan of the GW zombies either. Fortunately, any model can become a zombie with some simple conversion work and the right paint job. I'm running with a Lustrian theme. My zombie forces have a mix of humans and Skinks and Saurus. I plan to add Goblins and Skaven to it soon.

Myself, I'm doing converted Dark Elf Undead for my themed army.

Edit: Check The Story of Count Vashra in Tales from the Crypt for the character's story (though I'll use a vamp in game.)
