Hard to say, 2 of my armies are in progress, so I have not used them.

That said..

1. Dark Elves, wanted these back when I played 2nd eidtion 40K, finally got them in 8th, like the models and the variety of builds available, all the cool magic items (for how much longer....)

2. Vampire Counts. I haven't played with them so this may seem odd, but I like the look of the army, the rules, the internal balance, the seeming complexity of getting the most out of them, they have some of the best models on the market, fighty mages are new to me, i see nothing useless in the book (though I am no tourny gamer)

3. Bretonnia, what is not to love? Nice models, change of pace to the other armies, quite unique in play style and very powerfull.

4. Skaven. Again, neither used them, nor able too, but magic items, hordes, fun items and nice models, new play style to try out once I have enough models to field and Dreaded 13th :D

5. Not sure if I should put Orcs or Empire here... So I will opt with Empire, mainly due to nice models, various available builds, powerfull magic, Stanks and Hellblasters, Flaggelants and some fun new toys in the new book.

Great Topic!!!

1.) Tomb Kings.... I have always like Egyptian History and Culture and this army was perfect for me! great monsters and models.

2.) Vampire Counts.... I have a thing for skeletons and vampires are awesome. there's also alot of great models in the line!

3.) Skaven.... Hordes of rats how can you not like that. the models are awesome and they have some great fluff

4.) Warriors Of chaos.... Vikings are awesome and these reflect most of what I like in my troops tough and insane!

5.) Dark Elves.... Good book and Awesome models Cold OOP cold one knights are awesome models too!

1. Chaos
I've loved the chaos armies since I came across them back in 5th edition when they still shared an army book plus I fell to the worship of Khorne.

2. Bretonnians
My love of medieval stuff speaks to me and it says Bretonnians rock.

3. Vampire counts
I love vampires and the Blood Dragon line of vampires is one that speaks to me.

4. Orcs & Goblins
I love orcs plain and simple there's nothing cooler then having an orc get his arm hacked off and still keep going to rip the head off from the one who did it.

5. Skaven
Sneaky little rodents running around through the underground always interesting I throw my lot in with Clan Eshin one of my favorites of the four greater clans.

1) Vampire counts: My first army, I love the background and the units themselves even when GW try to ruin the lore because they are to short sighted to read what they wrote the week before.

2) Empire: Say waht you like, they guys have style, wish the knights looked a bit better but I love the heros it offers up, grim witch hunters, zealous warrior priests and grizeled generals..... also cannons... they have the good stuff.

3) Bretonians: Knights of the realm are just awesome smeared on toast, No other army feels so elite or gives such pride in their heraldry, I can just imagine myself riding through the country side Shaking my mailed fist at the passing peasantry yelling "Back to your turnips!"

4) Warriors of Chaos: Can you blame me for liking 8ft tall armour clad warriors in fur cloaks?..... The are the vikings of the desert.... No wonder they are always so angry, their boats won't work in the wastes and they have sand in their cracks all day.... I'd be screaming to the blood god as well in their shoes.

5) Deamons of Chaos........ Boob snakes....... Go to love Slanesh, the guy has style.

1) Blood Dragons: I am a big fan of the honour side of things with these guys. The story of Abhorash is awesome and I just dont buy the into the von carsteins being the best family. I just think they are in the public eye alot more. the rest of the families seem to be alot more 'hidden'

2) Slaneeshi's: Please so Dukes response!

3) Empire: The good at everything army. I see them as an army to learn the game with as they have abit of everything and are fun to play with aswell

4) Lizardmen: The characterful nature of the lixardmen is great, especially as the colour schemese make for an interesting spectacle.

5) Orks and Goblins: Come on now, how many of you cannot help but laugh when they squabble amongst themselves or a fanatic plows through its own unit.

1. Vampire Counts... My first army and I have always loved Gothic Undead fantasy. The fluff paints more of a picture in my head than any other army. Whenever I picture that un-godly vampire lord ripping units of mortals apart I just get a chill. Home turf is always a big deal to me, That is another reason I love the Counts: Sylvania and all of its dark eerie fluff makes the Vampire counts universe so cool to me.

2. Dwarfs... Their style of play is just too fun. Sit back and unload the finest weapons in the Old world upon the enemy, just to let them crash against the immovable wall of stubborn Dwarfs and fall to pieces. On the other hand their fluff is brilliant, between the beards, the Ale drinking, and the "never retreat never surrender" mantra. Plus whenever I play as Dwarfs I imagine Im defending the Mines of Moriah (LOTR fans). I also Like how they are defending their remaining holds from all kinds of "terrors in the deep". What I'm pretty much saying is if any Army should receive the most valiant award it would be the Dwarfs.

3. High Elves... Oh I love my High Elves, as they are so superior to men that I can only Imagine they are perceived as Aliens to the races of Men and Dwarfs. To sum them up in one word it would be Majestic. Their style of play is SO fun, they are the "opposite army" to my Dwarfs. They are really fun to use when it comes to declaring charges, destroying enemy units with hundreds of razor sharp ASF attacks, and using their "superior" magic. Their fluff is some of the best in the game IMO. I love their style because they are the most noble, Intelligent, mysterious and yet elegant races of the Old World. Not to mention how awesome the units and their fluff are such as White Lions, Swordmasters and Phoenix guard (the big 3). I also like how they are a dying race and they are the "light in the darkness" against Chaos and Dark Elves. They are all around the most Epic race, and the word Epic should not be used lightly.

I only play these three armies these days and no other armies appeal to me NEARLY as much as the Undead, the OG Elves, and the Dwarfs.

In no order of preference, my favourite changes on a monthly basis, but these are my top 5.

Chaos - mostly for the painting/modelling opportunity, and the sheer scope of models.

VC - my first painted army, love skellies and vampires, love the gothic imagery.

Wood Elves - nice low model count so quick to paint, and a real challenge to play with.

Dwarfs - the best background in the game for me, the models are not bad, could be better but I will never get rid of them.

Final slot is tricky, I do like history, so possibly the Brets.

On the opposite side of the coin, the armies I would never collect - skaven (too many), dark elves (too camp) and lizardmen (too kiddy).

1. Orcs & Goblins. They're brutal, backstabbin', random, sneaky and overall awesome. They loot, fight, squabble and eat mushrooms. What's not to like?

2. Vampire Counts. Vampires' fluff is awesome. I don't mean Twilight or GW's fluff but very old horror stories like the original Dracula. Vampires themselves and rising zombies into huge armies... So awesome.

3. Ogre Kingdoms. They're just like O&G, but with some businessman instincts. Huge beasts wandering in the North, killing, looting and eating everything from their past and then trading the stuff away. I like it.

4. Skaven. They're pretty much like Goblins, but even sneakier. They live in cramped setts and sewers and backstabbin' is a worldview. I don't have a Skaven army yet, but someday...

5. Warriors of Chaos. Regimented, tough viking-warriors from North, now how cool is that? They're disciplined, strong and they'll smash you when they get to you. I think Discord said it best, "Chaos is a wonderful, wonderful thing". I still don't have my WoC army though.

- Cheers, Skarsnik. /)

Wood elves: love fluff, style of play and most of all, being the underdog!
Vampire counts: something about dark immortals raising undead with plans of world domination appeals to me.
Skaven: an amusing amount of varity, but high model count will stop me starting them :(.
Bretts: shining coloum of horse men, and while i hate GW's LOTR its hard not to shout "For Rohan"when charging.
Dark elves: sinister, just how i like it.

P.S.
I want to clear something up. I am prodominantly a wood elf player and they are anything but unplayable. In 8ed i have lost to 1 player (although more then once, but he plays daemons so,meh) and to everyone i have won or had a wining draw. Yes wood elves are more challenging to play, but they are not not compettitive, as i won a club tourney last week by a whole 5 points!

1. Vampire Counts, though I need to find 'myself' with the new book right now. Not the biggest fan of the monstrous infantry right now (waiting for mantic werewolves and using gargoyles/morbid angels). Though I love the classic Sylvanian (not Strigoi/ghoul!) themed VC. :)

2. Chaos Dwarfs (really tie for first). Again, need to get acquainted with their new rules. Only downside is my CD army does not hold a candle to my current painting skills, so I dread having to get a whole new army or repainting. I just love this army, and really had fun with them for several years when we had to use ravening hordes.

3. Empire: My first army. I do like them, though I like playing them as more a quasi-historical army. So I love the infantry, cavalry, and shooting units. I do like the Warrior Priests and such. I like them enough where even my VC is themed as undead versions of these guys.

4. Nurgle (in general). I like Nurgle, as I find it very amusing. I don't specific WoC or Daemons as I do mean specifically Nurgle, and I wish I could mix the two. Both my Nurgle armies are probably my best looking armies, and I have a lot of fun working on Nurgle projects. My Nurgle WoC even scored *very* high (7th out of 80) at a recent event.

5. Tough on this, but I'd have to say Skaven. There is just something funny about them. Another army I had a lot of fun doing some custom work on stuff. Just need to work on basing and paint up more of the 'modern' clanrats... though the older style does have a special place as I paid for a bunch of them with one of the last birthday checks I got from my grandpa.

1) Vampire Counts. I'm on CN, chances are I like VC!

2) Dark Elves. Actually my first fantasy army, and I still have a soft spot for the twisted little things.

3) Wood Elves. I dabbled (briefly) in Wood Elves and like the fluff, and the idea of a very tactically diverse army. I never really got into the Welves, however, and only bought a couple of character models!

4) Empire. The army which has always tempted me, and the army that hopefully one day will become reality. (Heavy artillery!)

5. Bretonnians. As above, except with cavalry rather than artillery!

EDIT: [mod] Poll added to the thread. [/mod]

I'll go for the Top 5 armies that I have models painted for as I'm prone to flicking around.

1. Vampire Counts- the army that got me interested in the hobby, no more to be said. :konrad:

2. Dwarves- the first army I started collecting properly- loved the fluff and found them more simple to paint which is a problem for me due to speed of painting- very slow.

3. Ogre Kingdoms- Loved the concept since they appeared and again, much quicker to paint because of their low numbers. Great models and rules too.

4. Skaven- love the fluff, they are a unique race but unfortunately yet another horde army which means i'll never likely have the tabletop numbers to give them a decent go on the battlefield.

5. Wood Elves- need an update but still love these guys as i've always been fond of forests weirdly.

vampire:_ well it is a vampire forum
daemons:_ they are so easy to play ..... point and shoot
woodie:- real gammers play one of the hardest armys out
dark elves : i like the fluff behind them
ok i feel all your anger but i do own a high elves army

1. Vampire Counts
2. High Elves
3. Tomb Kings
4. Skaven
5. Daemons

With my limited experience and knowledge of the game... these guys looked the most fun / enjoyable. Or had the coolest models =D

Well, unfortunately, my first love has always been Chaos Warriors. I started with them about 15 years ago. After that I got hooked on ALL things Chaos.

Anywho, here's where I ranked my top 5:

1 - Warriors of Chaos
2 - Beastmen
3 - Daemons of Chaos
4 - Vampire Counts
5 - Orcs and Goblins

Go figure - all evil races! :perv:

1) Vampires (They make Chaos look like good little pretty boys)

2) Empire (Got to love the infantry and cannons)

3) Bretonia (Who does not like Hundred of over armoured Horse as you're core?)

4) Chaos Warriors (I love Warrior models and the knights/ characters are great)

5) Dark Elves )Because the other elves just don't cut it, besides who does not want a cult of angry oversexed women in bikinis taking to the battle field?)

1. Vampire Counts. Supernatural creatures are a little obsession of mine and Vampires are very powerful in almost any background and that really appeals to me. Magic, raising stuff from the dead and regenerating are really cool in my eyes and Vampires are stupidly hard to kill according to the fluff which I really love about them. They also have two really cool units of Knights and the whole army is very grim and dark. Awesome.
2. Dark Elves. First fantasy army. I had never seen evil elves before seeing the 6th Ed Dark Elf armybook as my only other knowledge was from LOTR and I fell in love at first sight. All the awesomeness that all Elves have but with dark magic, sinister armour and weapons and a ruthlessness that is unmatched. Also have amazing models and I hope to return to my beloved Dark Elves soon.
3. Ogre Kingdoms. Really love the idea of enormous monsters that can crush all before them. Literally. Love the fact they use massive guns for other armies as regular ones eg. empire handguns as pistols and cannons like handguns. I also love painting them and I seem to make them look really good compared to what I can do for my other armies.
4. Bretonnians. Another little obsession I have belongs to Knights. Bretonnia has Knights. I like Bretonnia :). I will do an army of them one day, they are too awesome to not do something about it.
5. Chaos Warriors. I see them as evil knights with all their armour and I like both knights and evil. Simple as that.

Thanks to Asperger's Syndrome I'm very obsessive and I generally go for an army that has as many obsessions I have as possible. Hence the theme of dark, evil stuff and knights :).

I found it impossible to vote on 5!

My favourites to play are Beastmen. But then I've only owned and played with Beasts, Daemons, Empire, Lizard Men and VC.

My favourites to play against are... well, I only ever play against Dark Elves, Dwarves and O&G really.

for Warhammer as a whole, the armies which define the game are probably:
Empire, O&G, WoC / DoC, Dwarves, High and Dark Elves, Skaven. Everything else is a bonus! Wood Elves are cool but ultimately not very important. The Slann role in the creation of the world we know is important but the army was retro-fitted to the game in 5th ed, before that the army was very different. Likewise VC if we're honest! And ofc TK, Ogres are fun but late to the party.

The most original bits of Warhammer are the Chaos powers - ok, sort of copied from Moorcock, but they are what lifts the WHF background out of being another AD&D / LoTR combo rip-off. Well, that and moving the Empire into an early Renaissance period in terms of both technology and style. The Skaven are also pretty much an original idea, as is the concept of slapstick orcs, which were perhaps the seed of the dark humour and over-the-top style which pervades WH today. Meanwhile, the Dwarves, and good vs bad elves are all lifted straight from LoTR with a twist of AD&D in the weapon choices (why do both Dwarves and Dark Elves use crossbows? Basically cos AD&D Monster Manual said so!)

Okay, I've waffled on too long now... sorry for not picking VC, they are one of the 5 armies I own and have their own style, but when I eventually do WoC and WE I expect to love them more! :|

1. VC, I love Vampires. The VC is the reason I started Fantasy.

2. Dwarfs, Favorite fantasy race from D&D days of my youth. Gotta love em.

3. Dark Elves, R. A. Salvatore. Wife got me hooked on it and naturally you can guess what followed.

4. Daemons, I have a big bunch of slanneshi daemons from 40k. They are quite fun in fantasy too.

5. Lizardmen, Had many a fun game smashing zombies into them.
