I know, you're totally correct. I'm just playing devil's advocate, arguing strict RAW as a counter to shady anti-charge "Ha-ha, I win Warhammer by preventing you from playing Warhamer" exploits.

To counter RAW, you need to argue against the grammar of the rules I'm citing, not the idea of how things actually function in practice. :clown:

But if the charging unit can only reach one of the targets it's declared against, it completes the charge against the one it can reach. (Example: You have a unit of 3 ogres. You declare a charge on a lone character with another lone character next to it, one inch apart. the only way to contact the charged character is to also touch the 2nd character, so you declare a charge on it as well. One character holds, the other flees. You can't reach the fled character, but can hit the one that held. No crazy shenanigans here. The charge doesn't fail; you simply complete against the one target that you can reach.)

In my example, after the first skirmisher flees, I cannot complete the charge without contacting another unit– The only possible moves to make contact are blocked by the unit it fled behind, so I literally "can't complete my charge without touching another enemy unit." The declaration of the charge was a legal declaration, but his placement and flee has resulted in this situation. Every move I would try would end up with me touching the other unit on the way in. Therefore, I must declare a charge against the blocking unit. If, after both charged units have resolved their reactions, I can't contact both, then I complete against the one that I can reach.

(Tobiothan, your example wouldn't work, because you can't declare a charge that's impossible to complete. There's no way to contact the green unit, so it can't be declared.)

There is absolutely a way to contact the green unit therefore my charge is legal.

In order for me to reach the green unit I would also have to charge both skirmishing units and they both have to flee. If they do that I can reach the green unit. Therefore it IS absolutely possible. Whether they flee or not is out of my control but I can in theory make it if I also charge the skirmish units.

getting to charge other units if the only stipulation is that another charge becomes possible, opens a whole host of fuckery

i forecast the death of troups, the appearance of infatry blightknigs size and heroes, round bases and basically the death of WHFB.
Hopefully I am completly wrong...

I suspect that they'll just release 8.5, and all the real development efforts will have gone into fine-tuning this supposed skirmish-level play that will serve as a launching point for new players. Would make the most sense, given how much they've been drumming up hype for their IP.

Round bases if a bit far fetched to me. GW knows full well how alienating that would be. If they go round bases then it's because it won't matter what sort of bases you're on (you can fight if your unit is in base-contact with the enemy. Period. Full-stop).

I've heard this round base rumour too and don't think it'll happen. So many WFB players out there have copious points worth of models forming armies on top of armies based on square bases. If they go round then so must be the chickens in their heads - so many people would think "What? I've gotta rebase all my models or just render my entire collection useless and start afresh? Pass! I'll stick to 8th."

This.

True, they might attract "new" customers to the hobby. But they'd give the mean old finger to all their current customers. IF they decide to do this, they'd be one of the stupidest companies in the world, in my opinion. So as far as my common sense goes, I don't think they'll do this.
MAYBE, we might see some stand alone models on round bases. We'll have to see about that. Skirmish-entry-game for those new to the hobby. Would be a good idea. But don't we already have mordheim for that ? (Never played so don't know its rules or how it is played)

Mine are maybe just speculations but I haven't seen a release of a normal infantry troop in ages. Only monster, characters and monstrous infantry. Logically those are easier to rebase, give you a sense of epicness but mostly you can still overprice them as anything GW does ( halo New Skitarii, seriously???) .

Plus,as many made me notice, old player does count as dead fly in an empty glass. We don't buy as much as they want and they don't care about loyalty if you don't pay for it. Is all about money.
My final proof has been that they didn't care to release new zombies unit, only monster base and nagash. Same goes for all the other ETC release.

But again... I might be wrong...

I reckon the new skirmish game will be a good way for GW to test the water for the equivalent to 30K in fantasy, a spinoff game set in a different time period that'll eventually take the reins from 8th Edition if successful. If we're lucky, maybe we'll get to keep our beloved 8th Edition for now?

GW and its commercial customers have a lot of existing stock to sell off, which may retain popularity thanks to Kings Of War and modellers that want conversion parts, but axeing 8th abruptly and invalidating the models' 'official' rules will drive customers away, I don't think they'd be so foolish. Besides, allowing 8th to run gives gamers time to transition over gradually; they shouldn't need to print much more stock and if they're lucky they'll sell a tonne more army books and starter sets before possibly using 9th as a scaling down operation, maybe making Currenthammer into a specialist rules set?

I'm sad to say I've practically checked out... Mate dragged me back into 40k and you can really see where the love's been going over the past few years, I barely recognise the game for what it used to be, which in a couple of areas is a good thing. GW's done me a favour, dispelling any preconceptions that the game will be supported forever has encouraged me to settle with 8th, not because I'm stubborn or angry but because I'm tired, my wallet's tired, and most of my mates gave up wargames years ago thanks to the new editions merry-go-round. I started collecting to play an awesome game with awesome models, and I've got that now. If I ever needed another edition before, I certainly don't at this stage in my life! Hopefully I'll maintain the same policy for 40k; hopefully GW will scare everyone up with another End Times and do me another favour.

exactly the same feeling bro. I just do not give already an hobby and that 2-3 hrs a week of gaming . That is why I dare to hope still....
I like painting and I love to play with painted model. But I cannot have a "GW" voice in my monthly expense ...

It is indeed an expensive hobby and I have become addicted. I could stop buying models now and still have YEARS left to paint the plastic that I have lying around, but for some reason I just keep buying. Not healthy when you're a student :)

Looks like the latest rumors put the impending starter box at July 11. And apparently the "rulebook" is very small, more like a pamphlet.

But here's a thought: The previous starters only had 2 armies, so they only appealed to people who wanted to play one of those two armies. The new one seems to have a smattering of allied stuff, Empire, "Grail Knights" Dwarfs, Chaos, etc. So it would appeal to a wider range of potential (and existing) players.

If the skirmish game is a "take whatever you want" Order vs Chaos game, and the mass combat game still uses 8th Ed armies (or combined armies), then almost everyone can buy this and get a unit or character that can fit in their force somewhere. (Almost. I don't think there is any Undead, Elves, Lizardmen, or Skaven.)

The waiting is killing me. But here's my prediction: This will be an introduction to Warhammer Fantasy, a game with multiple ways to play it: Mordheim-esque Skirmish or Mass Combat (classic Warhammer); and the setting can be pre, during, or post End Times for either version. The starter will have a bare bones introduction to miniatures gaming, with some basic rules so you can play with the models in the box. Then decide what you prefer– the skirmish level or mass combat level and buy the full rulebook for whichever version you want to play. People playing skirmish can expand their collections to eventually play the mass combat game, and people with full armies can scale down to play skirmish.

So we'll have:
The Starter Set (intro rules only)
A Skirmish Rulebook (ala Mordheim)
A Mass Combat Rulebook

Those rulebooks could be one single rulebook, but if they were, it would make sense to just put that in the starter box, and it seems more likely to have 2 smaller (cheaper) books than one large expensive book. (And in the long run, you'll probably pay more if you buy both books. ie: two $50 books instead of one $75 book.)

I have been refreshing the GW page like every ten minutes to see what this week's release is...

If you're looking for 40K stuff, fine. But if you're expecting something from Fantasy to drop, don't hold your breath. I really don't think we'll see anything from GW until July. It's not worth the stress, man.

@Alabaster427 I'm personally looking forward to it as long as it isn't the death of full army gaming. That's what Warhammer is about and would just be stupid as so many people have their current collections as big as they are (I'm looking at you and your 200 zombies, @Mad 'At )

Oh, and even more stupid of them because I've got about 100 zombies, ghouls and skeletons in the mail :)

I've nearly doubled my army size since Nagash came back, and it's not like I was only at 3000 points or less. Undead players already have the largest armies in Warhammer, so making it geared towards the already small armies would really aggravate me, as well. I doubt they are going small because lore of undeath is completely counter-intuitive to that and that's half the reason that they updated the FAQ in the first place. I think they were giving the big armies (mainly undead, grant you) the chance to finally play everything they have. "You can still play a 2500 pt game, but now you can do it with 5000 pts worth of models!"
